1 Division of Environment Acting Head of Division: Chak-Keung CHAN, Professor of Environment and Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Newly established in Fall 2009, the Division of Environment is the first interdisciplinary academic unit at HKUST with faculty members from all four Schools. It offers interdisciplinary undergraduate environmental program, and postgraduate environmental programs. Presently, the research focus of the Division is in the area of atmospheric and coastal marine science, and is planned to expand into selected areas of sustainable development, environmental management and policy. The Division plays an important role in community outreach and provide a leadership role in Hong Kong and the region in promoting public awareness of environmental sustainability, transferring research outcomes to the public and influencing environmental policies. UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS Global environmental issues such as climate change and diminishing natural resources require new ways of conducting business, new ideas and innovative solutions. The Bachelor of Science (BSc) program in Environmental Management and Technology helps students build their knowledge and skills necessary for challenging careers in environment leadership, policy, technology management and green business development. POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMS AND RESEARCH The postgraduate programs offered by the Division of Environment are all interdisciplinary in nature. The Division offers both research and taught postgraduate (PG) programs. The taught PG programs lead to the awards of Graduate Diploma (GD) and Master of Science (MSc) in Environmental Science and Management. Research postgraduate programs lead to Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in Atmospheric Environmental Science or Marine Environmental Science. Admission to the MPhil program or GD/MSc program requires a Bachelor s degree with second class honors or higher qualification. Admission to the PhD program requires a relevant Bachelor s degree, an MPhil or MSc degree in environmental science or in other relevant disciplines. In addition, applicants are also required to comply with the University s English Language requirements for admission to PG programs. 229
