4 1. Entry Requirements To be admitted to the degree programmes, the candidates should satisfy the entry requirements of the University as set out below. I. Three passes in any stream at G.C.E. A/L (local or foreign) or II. NVQ qualifications at level 5 or above or III. Pass in G.C.E. O/L in six subjects with credit passes in any three of the subjects, Science, ICT, Mathematics, First Language and English Language, together with relevant and recognized technical/vocational qualifications (minimum duration of three months full time or six months part time) and three years of relevant experience. 2. Charges 2.1. Integrated Coastal and Marine Resources Management (General) Fee Rs. Application fee Registration fee Science deposit (refundable) Library deposit (refundable) fee * 337, *The Fee is payable in six installments, each due at the beginning of the semester to be followed.(rs. 56, per semester(six month)) 2.2. Integrated Coastal and Marine Resources Management (Special) Fee Rs. Application fee 500 Registration fee Science Deposit (Refundable) Refundable Deposit for Library Fee 450, *The Fee is payable in eight (special) installments, each due at the beginning of the semester to be followed. Note: The students will have to bear the cost of accommodation/ lodging (if needed), travelling, stationery etc. in addition to the fees stated above. 3. Registration Students selected for admission are required to register for their respective courses at the Student Affairs Division of the University by submitting relevant documents. Each student will be issued with a Student Identity Card and a Student Record Book on completion of registration. All payments made by the student s shall be duly endorsed in their Student Record Books. On completion of each Semester, students are required to register for the next semester at least two (02) weeks before the commencement of the next Semester by filling the necessary form and paying the fees due for the new semester and settling all arrears in payment, if any. The students are required to ensure that all payments made are duly endorsed in the Student Record Book. Students, who do not register two weeks before the start of a semester, will not be eligible to follow the Semester.

5 3.1 Custody of Identity Cards and Student Record Books. Students are expected to keep their Identity Cards and Student Record Books in safe custody and treat them as confidential documents. The students are also expected to carry their Identity Cards when they are in the University premises and a student shall produce his/her Identity Card when required by an authorized officer ofthe University. Loss of Identity Cards and Student Record Books is viewed very seriously, and the student will be required to pay a sum ofrs. 500/= for the re-issue either document in the event of loss. 3.2 Surrender of Identity Cards and Student Record Books Students are obliged to surrender both the Identity Card and the Student Record Book on completion of the course to the Examination Division, prior to applying for their Degree Certificates. Students who fail to surrender the documents will not be eligible to obtain their Degree Certificate. 4. Examination & Evaluation The performance of a student will, in each subject, beassessed, based on assignments, continuous evaluation tests and closed book examinations. Examinations are held at the end of each semester, and students are required to have with them both their Identity Card and the Student Record Book during the examination.the marks awarded for assignments, continuous evaluation and the end of semester examination will betaken into account in computing the final grade for each subject. A minimum of 45% at the end semester examination, where applicable, and an SGPA of 2.0 are required in all subjects to pass the semester. Those who do not fulfill this requirement may sit repeat examinations, where offered, in the relevant course units to pass the semester. A student who is unable to fulfill the requirement at a repeat examination may sit the examination with the next batch of students. The students should decide on the subject/subjects in which they wish to repeat an examination based on the following: (a) The maximum GP obtainable for a repeated subject is a C+ (b) A minimum of 45% has to be secured at the examination in all subjects and an SGPA of 2.0 attained to pass the semester. 5. Eligibility Requirements to Sit End of Semester Examination To be eligible to sit an end of semester examination in any subject, a student should fulfill the minimum attendance requirement of 80% at lectures, practical classes, field-work and assignments. Failure to fulfill the above requirement in any Unit will disqualify a student from sitting the examination in that Unit; and the student may sit the examination at the end of the next semester, subject to fulfillment of the eligibility requirement. It should be noted that an examination sat at a subsequent semester will be treated as repeat examination in the Unit concerned.the student so sitting will thus be required to pay the repeat examination fee of Rs.500/= for each examination paper/ Unit Minimum Number of Credits per Semester A course unit is a subject module with a credit value. Accredit is a time-based quantitative measure used in calculating the grade point average. To complete the particular semester, a student is required to complete a minimum total of 15 credits comprising all compulsory core course units and electives (where applicable). 5

6 Credit allocation for lectures and tutorials: 15 contact hours = 1 credit Credit allocation for practical work and assignments, 30 hours of laboratory work = 1 credit Credit assignment for training programmes and Projects are individually determined based on the work content for each activity Registration for Examinations Students who are eligible to register for the end semester examination are required to register at Examination Division at least two weeks before the examinations commence and have their registration duly endorsed in the Student Record Book. Students who need to sit a repeat examination are required to re-register at the Examination Division after paying the repeat examination fee and are have their registration duly endorsed in the Student Record Book. Students who fail to register at least two weeks before the examination will not be eligible to sit the examination Grade & grade point average for courses. Letter grades based on the grade point system and the corresponding percentage marks are given in the table below and will be used to indicate performance in each course unit. *Marks(%) Grade point(gp) Remarks 85 A +4.2 Superior performance A 4.0 Excellent A- 3.7 Very good B+ 3.3 Good B 3.0 Encouraging B- 2.7 Moderately good C +2.3 Satisfactory C 2.0 Moderately satisfactory C- 1.7 Pass D 1.3 Conditional pass < 40 F 0 Fail *Value is worked out as weighted average of marks for End-of Semester Examination and Continuous Assessment, as relevant Calculation of Grade Point Averages 5.5. Semester Grade point Average (SGPA). The Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) is calculated at the end of each semester using the formula below: SGPA = ( C i x G i )/ C i Where C i is the number of credits for the i th Unit in a given semester and G i is the grade point earned for that Unit. If a student has followed Units of total worth more than 15 credits in a semester, the SGPA is calculated based on all compulsory Units comprising the highest scoring elective or electives that will take the total credits to 15 for that semester. 6

7 Overall Grade Point Average (OGPA). The Overall Grade Point Average (OGPA) is calculated for the entire degree programme or for a specific part of the programme using the formula below: OGPA = ( C i x G i ) / C i Where C i is the number of credits for the i th Unit and G i is the grade point earned for that Unit. If a student has followed Units of total worthmore than the minimum prescribed for qualification for a degree, the OGPA is calculated based on all compulsory Units and the fewest number of Units comprising the highest scoring elective or electives that will take the total credits to the minimum prescribed Improvement of Grades. A student who obtains a grade below C+ in any Unit may re-sit the examination for that Unit during the following academic year for the purpose of improving his/her grade, subject to a ceiling of C Maximum Number of Attempts for End of Semester Examinations The number times that a student is permitted to sit an end Semester examination shall not exceed three Period for Completion of Degree The maximum permitted period for completion of the degree programme is six years while that for Special, is seven years, unless the student has obtained prior written approval of the Academic Council to extend the period. A student may make a request for such extension through the Academic Head/course coordinator, with sufficient documentary evidence in support of the need of or such extension Absence from Examinations, Examination Offencesand Punishments Absence for examinations and examination of fences are dealt with, as per examination by-laws approved by the Academic Council of the University Updating of the Student Record Book Students are required to regularly update their Student Record Books on completion of each semester. 6. Eligibility for Specialization in the Fisheries and Marine Science Degree. Students may apply to follow the Special Degree semester based on their performance and preference Programme in Integrated Coastal and Marine Resources Management at the end of 4 th semester only students who have secured an OGPA of 2.8 or more for the period up to the end of the Fourth Semester are eligible to apply for the Special Degree Programme. 7. Research Projects Students following the Special Degree Programme in Integrated Coastal and Marine Resources Management are required to undertake a Research Project the Eighth Semester under the supervision of a member of the academic staff. On completion of the project, the students are required to submit a comprehensive project report followed by an oral presentation. The grade awarded for the Research Project will be based on the quality and content of both the report and the presentation. 7

8 8. Eligibility and Award of the Degree 8.1. Eligibility Criteria B.Sc. in Integrated Coastal and Marine Resources Management (General) A minimum total of 90 credits should be completedwith a minimum OGPA of 2.0 for the award of the Degree B.Sc. in Integrated Coastal and Marine Resources Management (Special) A minimum total of 120 credits should be completed with a minimum OGPA of 2.0 for the award of the Degree Award of Degrees Scheme of Award To be awarded the Degree, the Student should have completed all the compulsory course modules including specialization / training / project work. To obtain a degree with a class the students should complete the credits required within a specified period as given below. Degree Programme Integrated Coastal and Marine Resources Management (General) Integrated Coastal and Marine Resources Management (Special) Duration 4 years 5 years Classes The award of classes is subject to the fulfillment of all the graduation requirements within four or five academic years as relevant. The Overall Grade Point Average as shown below will be used in the determination of the class awarded. Class OGPA Required First Class OGPA 3.7 Second Class (Upper Division) 3.30 OGPA < 3.7 Second Class (Lower Division) 2.70 OGPA < 3.3 Pass 2.00 OGPA< 2.70 Under exceptional circumstances, a student who satisfies the OGPA but takes longer than four or five academic years, as relevant, to fulfill the course requirements maybe deemed to be eligible for the award of a degree with Class Honors by the Board of Management on their commendation of the Academic Council Academic Concession A student who has missed an end-of-semester examination due to an illness or other compelling reason may appeal with supporting documents to the Dean/Academic Head for an Academic Concession within one week from the date of an examination. 8

9 8.3. Effective Date of Award of Degree The effective date of award of degree shall be the date of the last day of the final examination. In the case of students repeating examinations, the effective date shall be the date of the last repeated End of Semester examination. 10. Losses and Damages Students who cause loss or damage to moveable or Immovable property of the University will be severely dealt with. The cost of any such loss or damage will be recovered, by the University from the student or students responsible, as applicable. Failure to make payment for damages will disqualify such student or students, as applicable, from being awarded the degree and/or obtaining the Degree Certificate. 11. Updating of Student Data Base A Student Data Base is maintained by the Student Affairs Division of the University for communication with students as well as for administrative purposes. The students are required to inform the University of their Changeof addresses, contact telephone numbers, e-addresses etc. Promptly in writing to update the DataBase to facilitate communications with the University. 9
