Rail transit development in China Proper rail transit vehicles are applied according to the city layout, population distribution and regional economic development in China in order to meet the purpose of different passengers' travelling. Main line and urban rail transit vehicles are classified according to the functions of vehicles, and both of which consist of the following three kinds of vehicles respectively: Main line rail transit vehicles: High speed EMU main line railway passenger coaches Intercity EMU urban rail transit vehicles ; Metro vehicles or light rail vehicles; Commuter train (also called as suburban trains); Medium passenger loading vehicles ( including low-floor trams, low- speed maglev vehicles and monorail vehicles, etc.)
Rail transit development in China Transporting functions undertaken by different rail transit vehicles: High speed EMU and main line railway passenger coaches: mainly undertake the long-distance passenger transportation among several metropolises; Intercity EMU:mainly undertake the middle or short-distance passenger transportation between cities or inner the city group; Metro vehicles and light rail vehicles:mainly undertake the short-distance passenger transportation in a metropolis; Commuter trains or suburban trains:mainly undertake the middle or shortdistance passenger transportation among a metropolis and the satellite towns around the metropolis; Medium passenger loading vehicles ( including low-floor trams, low-speed maglev vehicles and monorail vehicles, etc.): mainly undertake the shortdistance passenger transportation for the suburban of metropolis or special area, which is an important supplement of the urban mass metro vehicles, which also can be used as the public transport means for the central urban area of middle and small cities.
