CANDIDATE GUIDE TO THE RPL PROCESS Welcome to the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process with Brisbane North Institute of TAFE. The RPL process used at Brisbane North Institute of TAFE provides you with the opportunity to provide several kinds of evidence to support your application to have your skills and knowledge assessed against industry standards. Your assessor is available throughout the process to assist you with any questions you may have about the process. Do not hesitate to contact your Assessor when you need assistance. What is Evidence and how do I provide it? Evidence is what your RPL assessor uses to verify that your skills and knowledge match the industry requirements of the unit/s. The RPL Assessor will ask you questions, review documents or work samples you supply, and may wish to speak with your supervisor or observe you in the workplace. Your assessor will discuss the particular evidence requirements of your course with you. Examples could include: Position description Induction attendance and OHS updates Performance appraisal or manager s feedback Documentation you have generated as part of your job role Written feedback from clients or customer testimonials Professional development or in house training sessions Copies of other training you have undertaken Photos or videos of your work Supervisor Report or Workplace Observation The evidence that you submit must follow the rules of evidence as outlined in the National VET Regulator (NVR) VET Quality Framework That means the evidence you provide must be: Authentic (your own work or in the case of third party evidence, their own work) Valid (covers the skills and knowledge related to the course) Current (gathered recently or in the recent past) Sufficient (enough appropriate evidence is gathered to ensure all aspects of competency are satisfied) How long does the RPL process take? The recommended time for RPL at BNIT is up to (3) months from the first interview, although it can occur in less time and will depend on you enrolling and your availability and response to evidence requirements. TIPS AND HINTS TO HELP YOU PREPARE FOR RECOGNITION To have your skills formally recognised to achieve a qualification or skill set via RPL, you must be able to show your assessors that you have the skills knowledge and industry experience to meet the industry standard. This means you will be involved in a careful and comprehensive assessment process that covers the content of all unit/s or qualification/s for which you are seeking recognition. Assessment happens in a variety of ways. Being prepared can save you valuable time and hassle and make the recognition process stress-free for you. Here are some tips and hints for you: 1. Be prepared to talk about your job roles and your work history. Bring a copy of your resume. 2. Bring your current position description/role statement and any performance appraisals you have had in any jobs you have worked in. 3. Consider the possibilities for workplace contact. Are you in a workplace that is supporting your goal to get qualified? Would you feel comfortable to have the assessor contact your workplace or previous workplaces so your skills can be confirmed if required? 4. Think about who can confirm your skill level. Think about current or recent supervisors who have seen you work in the past 18 months and will be able to confirm your skills. The assessor may need to contact them. You may also have community contacts or even clients themselves who can vouch for your skill level. 5. Collect any certificates from in-house, industry training workshops, seminars or formal training you have done in the past. 6. You can speak with your assessor about other ways you can show your skills in your industry. These could be letters from employers, records of your professional development sessions, employers or clients in related industries or government agencies, acknowledgements or awards, workplace forms (as long as they don t show client details) or other relevant documents. PLEASE DO NOT send original documentation. Your RPL Assessor will advise on the evidence requirements.
