Hubway Data Visualization Challenge 0016046 蔡 佩 珊 0356620 鄭 翊 辰
Introduction Hubway is a bike company like U-bike in Taipei. Every time a Hubway user checks a bike out from a station, the system records basic information about the trip. Station coverage: Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, and Somerville. There are about 1600 thousand data recorded from Jul. 2011 to Nov. 2013.
Proposed Approach Data introduction Tasks & approaches
Data Introduction There are several variables in the records which help us to analyze Duration Start / end date Start / end station Bike number Member type Zip code Birthdate Gender
Main Task We mainly analyze data from two perspectives: temporal and spatial (Task 1) figure out the throughput of each station (Data for Task 1) start station + end station (Approach for Task 1) 2d map with circles (Task 2) figure out the distribution of daily/weekly/yearly throughput of each station (Data for Task 2) start date + start station + end date + end statio (Approach for Task 2) histogram
Framework Data preprocessing statistics Data visualization Javascript with d3 library for histogram and leaflet library for map
Components Structure map map panel legend yearly framework histogram weekly hist panel group/stack daily station info
Components - map in 2d map, locations of circles locations of stations size of circles number of bikes in/bikes out for overview colors of circles bikes in/bikes out portion of semicircles portion of bikes in/bikes out color gradients of points number of bikes in/bikes out for detail
Components - histogram in histogram, x axis time span y axis number of bikes in/bikes out in stacked/grouped view
Components Relation map color of circle is referenced from legend map circle is clicked then show station info and histogram group/stack control the view of histogram
Observations - Map we can compare the size of circles from map for overview and reference colors of circles from legend for detail information. circles in Boston are larger than the other places. Boston is the main service area of Hubway. in most stations, the portions of two colors in a circle are almost the same. no much difference between the number of bikes in/bikes out.
Observations - Map
Observations - Yearly Histogram in most stations, no traffic in December, January and February. since Hubway is out of service in these three months. in most stations, throughput is increasing from July and decreasing from November. people may perfer to ride a bike in autumn weather.
Observations - Yearly Histogram
Observations - Weekly Histogram about throughput weekday > weekend most of the customers at center of cities may be office workers, so there are more traffic on weekday when they need to work. weekday < weekend most of the customers at touring sites go there for a walk in holiday. weekday weekend. most of the customers at academy zone are students, so they use bikes as daily transportation tool.
Observations - Weekly Histogram
Observations - Daily Histogram about throughput two peak most of the customers at center of cities may be commuters, so there are two peak in a day: rush hours when they are going to work and going back home. smoothly increasing then decreasing most of the customers at touring sites go there for a walk in the afternoon.
Observations - Daily Histogram
Observations - Daily Histogram about comparison between bikes in/bikes out no much difference between the number of bikes in/bikes out most of the customers at center of cities may be commuters so they borrow bikes from stations near home then return to stations near office soon in rush hours. more bikes out in the morning and more bikes in in the afternoon most of the customers at touring sites borrow bikes in the morning and return in the afternoon when they have had fun. more bikes in in the morning and more bikes out in the afternoon most of the customers at academy zone are students and they may tend to go around at night., etc.
