Weibel Newsletter 45135 South Grimmer Boulevard, Fremont CA 94539 Main Office: (510) 651-6958 FAX (510) 651-6653 Office Hours: Monday Friday 8:00 to 4:00 http://www.fremont.k12.ca.us/weibel Volume XXX, Article 11 June 2017 Catherine Strommen, Principal ~ Dora Vasquez, Secretary ~ Tammi Viegas, Office Assistant Dates to Remember Principal s Message Dear Weibel Families, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for a wonderful three years at Weibel. Your new principal, Annie Lee, and I have been working together over the past few months to ensure a smooth transition. I wish all of you, students and parents, much success and happiness. I have some random words for of wisdom on raising super kids. Spend time talking with your children. Turn off the screens. Allow them to experience failure. Let them play in the dirt. Allow hours and hours of unstructured time for them to develop the part of the brain that controls executive functions (decision making). Hold them accountable. Give them chores. Listen to teachers wise advice they are in the business of supporting your child s success. Be partners with the school. Volunteer for a committee or a school event. Teach your kids when life gives them lemons, make lemonade (growth mindset); you may have to coach them. Go on an internet diet. Visit the mountains, the beach, the desert, and let them explore. Allow your children to choose what books they want to read. Let them make a mess and then clean it up. Play with your children Lego, basketball, Barbies, school, and board games. Enjoy being with them. Take it from a grandmother: you won t regret the investment of time. Catherine Strommen Principal School Lunch Payment Info The last day to submit checks to pay for school lunches is Friday, May 19. Important 2017-2018 Enrollment Information: If you would like to apply for a new Intra- District Transfer, you may submit your application to your Home School starting May 22 through June 2, 4:30 pm. Notifications for these will be mailed to parents / guardians and school no later than June 19, 2017. NOTE: New Intra-District Applications received after June 2 will not be processed until all overloaded students have been placed. For all other new TK 6 th grade enrollment for next year will be ongoing beginning May 8 through the FUSD website. Reminder of BP/AR 5113.1 All Students Must Be Present in Class the First Day of School Wednesday August 30, 2017. The first day of school for the 2017-2018 school year will be: Wednesday, August 30, 2017. Students must be present on the first day or risk losing their seat at Weibel. Students who are not in school on the first day of school will not be guaranteed a seat at their school and may have to be overloaded to another school effective the second day of school if classrooms at their school are filled. The only exception will be students who are absent due to illness (verifiable by a doctor). If a student is absent the first day due to illness, parents/guardians must notify the school every day the student is absent. Seats will NOT be held for students on extended vacations or other optional activities, whether or not the school is notified. TK / Kindergarten Placement Letters Letters with your TK or Kinder child s AM or PM placement will be mailed out the week following the last day of school before the Weibel office closes. Students find out who their teacher is the week before school starts in August through completing the Maze process. 2017 2018 Maze Day News The Maze Team is hard at work organizing Maze Online. Please keep your eye on your email for further information as this summer s Maze Online event takes shape. Maze Day 2017-2018 The Maze Team thanks Weibel families, teachers and staff for their continued support and patience as we do our best to make this transition. Stay tuned for further updates and details over the summer via the school emails and Weibel FB page. Weibel Olympics are coming! June 5 9 Weibel will be having activities for our own Olympics! Parents will need to sign in each day in the office to get a Volunteer / Visitor badge. Please check with your child s teacher if you plan to come, as each class is scheduled at different times. Parents are asked to stay on the blacktop playground area only and away from the main campus / classrooms to avoid disturbing classes. Closing Ceremonies will be from 8:30 to 11:00 am on June 9. End of Year Absences Sometimes, families consider getting an early start on Summer Vacation. Unfortunately, if a student misses more than 10 consecutive days, they could be disenrolled. (Absences for illness verified with a Doctor s note are excepted). Parents would need to re-enroll their children with the district office, and could possibly be overloaded to another school if there is a waiting list for that grade level. Moved or Will be Moving? Available in the Weibel front office is our form to formally notify the school of your

move. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to notify the school their student attends, within five school days, when the student, parent/guardian move from the address provided at the time of registration. It is considered falsification to move and fail to notify the District. Falsification of residency will result in a fine equivalent to the current base revenue limit (approximately $6,000) per school year, and the student will be dropped from enrollment. If you are moving from one FUSD schools attendance area to another FUSD school, you may pick up a Statement of Residency form in the office and turn it in to the new home school to begin processing the change of address. Warm Weather Dress Code Reminders Please refer to the FUSD Parent Handbook available online through the FUSD website as the weather gets warmer and wardrobes adjust for the rising temperatures. Please keep in mind: No flip flops or open-toed shoes may be worn No tank tops (boys or girls), muscle shirts, tube tops, spaghetti straps, off the shoulder or low cut tops Shorts and skirts must be an appropriate length which must reach at least to the student s fingertips with arms at the side Hats may not be worn in class Sunglasses may not be worn inside school buildings without a medical note Lost and Found The lost and found bins are overflowing with clothing, water bottles, lunch boxes, etc. Items in the large blue lost and found bins are on display in the MUR or chained to the fence close to the front office. The Lost and Found may not be checked during school hours to avoid disruption to classrooms. Please check before 8:15 or after 2:40 for your student s lost items. Any items not picked up will be donated to charity. Last Chance 6 th Grade Immunization Reminder The final date TO SUBMIT immunization updates for 6 th graders (including required Whooping Cough / TDAP boosters) to your elementary school is: Thursday June 15 th, 2017 After this date, you must WAIT until August and take the official record of vaccinations to the Junior High your child will be attending If you previously had a Personal Beliefs Immunization exemption for your child, they are no longer valid when entering 7 th grade. For more information, please see attached FUSD flyer. Fremont Unified School District Office of Student Support Services PERTUSSIS BOOSTER: NO SHOT! NO SCHOOL! Pertussis Booster Required for 7 th Grade 2017/2018 School Year Dear Parents/Guardians, All students entering the 7 th grade in the 2017/2018 school year must receive a Tdap (Pertussis/ Whooping Cough) booster shot before entering school in August 2017.

We highly encourage you to have your student receive the TDAP vaccine now and to bring proof to your student s school office as soon as possible. This will prevent delaying registration and selection of courses for 7 th grade. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation! SSS/ck RVSD. 1/23/17 END OF YEAR MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL If your student has required medication or health services at school this year, all medication and medical supplies must be picked up from the school office on the last day of school! Medications must be picked up by a parent or guardian unless your student is authorized (current contract on file) to self-carry his/her medication. If your student is attending summer school the medication (to include the doctor s order) must be picked up the last day of school. Then it needs to be taken to the summer school site on the first day of summer school by the parent/guardian. Please make sure the medication does not expire prior to July 31, 2017. Norovirus infection causes gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and intestines. This leads to diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain. It is often called stomach flu. Norovirus is not related to the flu (influenza). Symptoms include: Vomiting and Diarrhea Feel extremely sick Can lead to severe dehydration Reminder: Students are to be kept at home if they have diarrhea or vomiting. They can return to school 24 hours after diarrhea or vomiting has stopped. The best way to prevent norovirus from spreading:

Practice proper hand hygiene after using the toilet or changing diapers. Also before eating, preparing and handling food. Soap and water is preferred as alcohol based hand sanitizers have limited effectiveness against the norovirus. If possible avoid other individuals who have the above symptoms. Wash fruits and vegetables and cook seafood thoroughly. When you are sick do not prepare food or care for others. Clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces. Wash laundry thoroughly. There is no specific treatment for Norovirus; however some things can be done to relieve symptoms: Drink plenty of liquids to replace fluid loss and prevent dehydration. Persons who are concerned about their symptoms should contact their health care provider. For more information: http://www.cdc.gov/norovirus If you have any questions please contact your school nurse.
