Bachelor s Degree Psychology Psychology is concerned with the human experience, thinking, feeling and behaviour, as well as the causes and conditions thereof. The Bachelor s degree at the AAU includes the basic psychological fields of general psychology, biological psychology, differential psychology and diagnostics, social psychology, developmental psychology, clinical psychology and the teaching of psychological methodology. Psychoanalysis, Psychotherapy and Intervention Research, Culture, Conflict and Trauma, Lifelong Development, Qualitative-quantitative Methodology Research and Cognitive Research. Due to its specific areas of focus, students need to bring with them scientific interest as well as social openness and interpersonal skills. They are also required to be willing to deal with psychic conflicts and illnesses, to be open to self-reflection and enthusiastic about developing social and emotional skills. Generally, the Bachelor s Degree Programme is classified as part of the Natural Sciences, however in the case of the AAU, the discipline of Psychology belongs to the Social Sciences and Cultural Studies, as well as to the Natural Sciences. The specific model used in Klagenfurt aims to lead to an understanding of the individual and of groups, which derives from the synergy of approaches contributed by Culture Studies, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences. In doing so, it maintains the principle of interdisciplinarity by setting the research focus in the areas of
WHAT MAKES THE EXPERIENCE OF STUDYING AT THE ALPEN-ADRIA-UNIVERSITÄT KLAGENFURT UNIQUE? The AAU is the only university in Austria (and one of very few in the German-speaking area overall) that covers the broad spectrum of the discipline in its entirety the approaches applied draw from the qualitative, Cultural Studies-oriented and psychoanalytical as well as the experimental, quantitative and Natural Science-oriented fields. Furthermore, exchange programmes offer the opportunity to spend a semester abroad at one of our partner universities. Jobs and careers The Bachelor degree programme provides an introduction to the sub-disciplines of Psychology, including both fundamental principles and practice-relevant areas, and it provides an initial professional qualification, as well as preparing the way for further study (e.g. Master s Degree Programme in Psychology). The successful completion of the Bachelor s degree programme in Psychology allows graduates to perform supervised psychological activities under expert guidance in professional settings, however, without the entitlement to use the professional title of Psychologist. I have also learned about the symptoms, causes and conditions of psychological disorders. This, in addition to innumerable other factors lead me to the conviction that, given the choice, I would certainly elect to study Psychology again.
