Foto: Maurer Image by Maurer The Alpen-Adria-Universität A hub for the acquisition, exchange and transfer of knowledge The Alpen-Adria-Universität (AAU) is a young and innovative university, located at the intersection of three diverse cultures. Since it was founded in the year 1970, the AAU has become firmly established as the leading institution of academic education in Carinthia, and serves as an important hub for the acquisition, exchange and transfer of knowledge across the entire Alps-Adriatic Region. The AAU s scientific achievements regularly earn national and international recognition. The projects carried out here serve as important impulse generators for the business location Carinthia. Four faculties with 36 departments More than 10,000 students attend the Alpen-Adria-Universität for the purposes of study and research, including around 1,800 students from abroad. Approximately 1,500 members of staff strive to produce outstanding achievements in the realms of teaching, research and university administration. Work and research is carried out within the AAU s four faculties. In addition, several specialized centres contribute to shaping the university s specific portrait. Intercultural exchange between the Alpine and the Mediterranean culture The Alpen-Adria-Universität is located in Austria s most southern province, in Carinthia s capital city Klagenfurt, which is home to around 100,000 inhabitants. The proximity to Italy and Slovenia results in an atmosphere of intercultural exchange at the intersection between the Alpine and the Mediterranean culture. The AAU addresses this unique opportunity by offering a wide range of cooperation activities, scholarships for research visits abroad, language courses, visiting professorships, summer schools, and exchange programmes. The Adriatic coast can be reached by car in approximately two hours. There are literally no limits to the leisure time possibilities, both during the winter and the summer. At the same time, Klagenfurt is at the centre of a highly diverse European Central Region: The cities of Ljubljana, Graz, Udine, Salzburg, Trieste, Venice, Vienna, and Munich all lie within a radius of 130 to 350 kilometres (by road). Young university, powerful history In 1970, the College of Educational Sciences is founded in Klagenfurt. A mere 3 years later, regular courses of study commence. The college is re-named University of Educational Sciences in is the founding year of the Inter-University Research Institute for Distance Learning (since 1991: Institute for Interdisciplinary Research and Continuing Education German abbreviation IFF). The name of the university is changed to Universität Klagenfurt in At the same time, a Faculty of Humanities and a Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Informatics are inaugurated. In recognition of its manifold activities in the Alps-Adriatic Region, the university adopts the name Alpen- Adria-Universität Klagenfurt in The Institute for Interdisciplinary Research and Continuing Education (IFF) is established as the university s third faculty. The expansion of Technical Sciences results in the foundation of a separate faculty at the beginning of the year The Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Informatics is restructured to yield a Faculty of Management and Economics and a Faculty of Technical Sciences. In 2013 the AAU joins the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences and the Carinthian University College of Teacher Education to form the Carinthian University Conference (German abbreviation KHK). Since it was initially founded, the Alpen-Adria-Universität has undergone comprehensive redevelopment and has distinguished itself in the spheres of research and teaching. A display room on campus the Reflectorium, located in the building referred to as the Vorstufengebäude is dedicated to presenting the university s history. The Alpen-Adria-Universität was founded in It serves as a hub for research and knowledge in the Alps-Adriatic Region. 4,5 x,x

One of the faculty s distinctive features is the diversity of its discipline-specific and transdisciplinary research activities. It encompasses a broad range of basic subjects in the realm of linguistic, cultural social sciences, and it promotes multilingualism and intercultural education. The faculty has always regarded the heterogeneity of subjects as an opportunity to absorb new impulses and to tackle these collaboratively, transcending the boundaries of the sciences. The transdisciplinary interests and projects of the faculty are expressed in joint research and teaching activities. The faculty s joint spheres of research focus are represented by the areas of visual culture, educational research, migration/multilingualism, identity/alterity, medieval research, and cultural science/cultural studies. In its teaching activities, the faculty places emphasis on the qualified interdisciplinary nature of the degree programmes, which is further enhanced by extension curricula. The faculty strongly supports the ongoing lively scientific exchange within the Alps-Adriatic Region. For instance, the Master s degree programme German Studies in an Intercultural Context is a double degree programme offered in collaboration with the University of Udine. 6,7 The departments cover a heterogeneous spectrum of basic disciplines in the human sciences.

The AAU thus encourages the academic and professional orientation of the training and continuing education of teaching staff and sets relevant research priorities. The close cooperation with the Carinthian University College of Teacher Education and the Development Association South-East can be seen as an expression of this awareness, and is regarded as a significant contribution to strengthening Klagenfurt as an important teacher training location. The Robert Musil Institute for Literary Research/Carinthian Literature Archive is jointly carried by the AAU, the city of Klagenfurt and the province of Carinthia. Within its scope of activities, the institute is responsible for the House of Literature, literature research and the literature archive. The Musil Institute houses a special section of the university library, which is open to the public and includes around 5,000 volumes on the literary and cultural history of Carinthia and the neighbouring regions of Friuli and Slovenia. To date, the Faculty Centre for Peace Research and Peace Education is the only peace institution at a public Austrian university. The centre derives its unique profile from the combination of peace education with peace research in the sphere of the social sciences and humanities. The Faculty Centre for Sign Language and Communication of the Hearing Impaired examines the phenomenon of language that is produced in the visual channel, compared to spoken languages. The practically applied work of the centre aims to achieve a long-term improvement of the situation of hearing impaired individuals, particularly for deaf people and those who have a severe hearing impairment. The Centre for Women s and Gender Studies serves to promote and coordinate gender democratic teaching. It also contributes to the conception and implementation of Women s and Gender studies. The centre places significant emphasis on national and international co-operations as well as on establishing networks with institutions working in the Women s and Gender sphere. The Writing Skills Centre is unique in Austria, and has been developed as an institution that focuses on teaching and research in the sphere of scientific and professional writing. Particular focus is placed on supporting students while they write academic papers during the course of their studies. The M/O/T School of Management, Organizational Development and Technology offers managers a range of university certificate programmes delivered by the Alpen-Adria-Universität, covering the fields of management, organisational development and technology. The university s employees Knowledge, and the productive augmentation thereof, represent the capital of universities. For this reason, employees are the AAU s most valuable resource: Their knowledge, their expertise, and their creativity provide a foundation for the successful research and teaching performance. The AAU aims to continuously promote the expertise of its employees through the systematic development of measures of education and training. In the case of academic staff, the focus lies on providing supporting measures for the individual development of academic careers. The AAU supports a positive working environment through a variety of measures that fall within the realm of infrastructure and culture. For example, young academics are continuously supported during the process of developing and submitting projects to the FWF or the European Commission. Female academics and female students can apply for the so-called Excellentia Grants and Financial Aids, which provide financial support to young women who elect to spend time abroad in order to complete their work on a particular scientific project. Within its funding strategy, the AAU s own Research Council places particular emphasis on supporting young scientists. The continuing education system within the AAU runs a programme for young scientists, which helps them to develop specific skill sets. In order to further strengthen these efforts, a Young Scientists Think Tank was established as a consultation group by the vice-rector for research. The AAU has been awarded the Family-Friendly University certificate. In the context of the ongoing audit, measures are currently being developed that aim at achieving a family-oriented higher education policy. The university also holds the seal of quality for Workplace Health Promotion. Working together in this area, employees and students contribute significantly to a healthy environment at the AAU.
