BACKGROUND / OBJECTIVES AND ORGANISATION BACKGROUND Thanks to the successful fellowship programme carried out between Catania School of Medicine and Montreal McGill University, a project was implemented to benefit from the Canadian experience and set up a paediatric palliative care programme in Catania that could serve as a centre of excellence for Sicily. This cooperation project perfectly fits the purpose of both the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care of the Catania School of Medicine and of A.P.I.C.E.: supporting clinical research and expertise exchange in the field of Anaesthesia, Intensive Care and Palliative Care. Furthermore, the qualified staff of professionals who have increased their skilfulness during years of experience in paediatric surgery allow the Catania Section of Anaesthesia for Paediatrics to play an important role in connecting Italy and Canada to further spread education in the Mediterranean Area. To enforce the basis of this cooperation, the organisation of a Masterclass to be held once a year for a selected group of attendants was planned. The first meeting is to be held in 2007 in Catania. An additional remarkable outcome of the cultural interaction between Montreal and Catania will be the publishing by Springer- Verlag Italia of a book based on the Masterclass contents. OBJECTIVES AND ORGANISATION OF THE MEETING The meeting aims at deepening professionals knowledge and know-how in order to develop their skills in providing the most efficient care, both improving medical standards and enhancing the ability to offer quality assistance and support to little patients and their families. Interactive discussions and a multidisciplinary approach to the subject are the didactic methods chosen for this intensive two-day meeting. Official language will be English.
