ON-CAMPUS HOUSING OPTIONS Fraternity Row (FR) ABOUT THE FRATERNITY ROW APARTMENTS The Fraternity Row Apartments are a minute s walk to the American Language Institute (ALI). The ALI rents a limited number of 3-bedroom & 2-bathroom or 2-bedroom & 2-bathroom apartments to ALI international students, and the remaining apartments are filled with American students who attend San Diego State University. Students will share an apartment with other ALI students, not with American students. Each apartment is furnished with the following items: lamps, dining table and chairs, sofa, side chairs, coffee table, end table, dressers, twin XL (extra long) beds, and nightstands. There are NO dishes, pots, pans, or linens (sheets, towels, blankets, pillows). Students will also have full use of the Fraternity Row Apartments Student Lounge. The Lounge has a big-screen TV, study area, and pay-per-use washer/dryer. PRICES FULL SEMESTER (not per month) The prices for renting a room in the Fraternity Row Apartments are as follows: SPRING 2013 IEC/BGP/EAP/Pre-MBA (December 30 - May 11) Private $4,250 Shared $2,885 Semester at SDSU (December 30- May 17) Private $4,500 Shared $3,100 There are no private bedrooms which also have private bathrooms in the Fraternity Row Apartments. These prices DO include a REASONABLE USE of electricity, water, and internet services. These prices DO NOT include food, telephone, cable television, dishes, pots, pans, or linens (sheets, towels, blankets, pillows). RESERVATION DATES: Reservation dates must cover a MINIMUM of one semester. Fraternity Row is NOT for shortterm study or IEC Flexible Entry students. Exact reservation dates will vary with each apartment. These dates may be different than the requested dates and will be determined when housing is confirmed.
PIEDRA DEL SOL (PDS) ABOUT PIEDRA DEL SOL: The Piedra del Sol (PDS) apartments are located across the street from the ALI. The ALI rents a limited number of private bedrooms in 4-bedroom apartments to ALI international students, and the remaining apartments are filled with American students who attend San Diego State University. Students will share an apartment with other ALI students, not with American students. Room requests cannot be guaranteed, but we will do our best to accommodate students according to their first choice. Students will receive a space in the apartments based on the date we receive the PDS application, the date the student applied to the ALI, and the gender and nationality of the student. Each apartment is furnished with: lamps, sofa, coffee table, vacuum cleaner, dining table and chairs. Each bedroom is furnished with: 1 twin-size bed, dresser, nightstand, desk, and desk chair. There are NO televisions, dishes, pots, pans or linens (sheets, towels, blankets or pillows) provided by the ALI. These items may be brought from home or purchased after arrival. PRICES & TERMS: The price will be for a private bedroom / shared bathroom. There are no shared bedrooms available. This price DOES include a REASONABLE USE of gas, electricity and water and ALSO include internet service and cable television service. These prices DO NOT include telephone service, food, dishes, pots, pans or linens (sheets, towels, blankets or pillows). A deposit is not required; however, we do collect credit card information which is kept on file in case there are any unpaid housing fees. The total price must be paid in one payment either prior to arrival or during the first week of classes. After the application is received, the student s name will be placed on the Piedra del Sol apartment waiting list. RESERVATIONS for Piedra del Sol are confirmed 1-2 months before the program start date. The ALI Student Life Coordinator will contact you when your application is received, AND when reservations are made, even if you were not assigned a room in PDS. If there is no space available in Piedra del Sol, ALI will notify the student or student s agent and provide other housing options. SANCTUARY ABOUT SANCTUARY: The Sanctuary apartments are located by the bus and trolley stations by San Diego State University. The ALI rents a number of furnished 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom apartments to ALI international students, and the remaining apartments are filled with American students who attend San Diego State University. Students will share an apartment with other ALI students, not with American students. Room / roommate requests cannot be guaranteed, but we will do our best to accommodate students according to their first choice. Students will receive a space in the apartments based on the date we receive the Sanctuary application, the date the student applied to the ALI, and the gender & nationality of the student. All rooms in Sanctuary are shared. There are NO private rooms available. Each bedroom are furnished with two TWIN-XL sized beds, dressers, and nightstands for each student. Additionally, the apartment is furnished with a couch, chair, dining table, dining chairs, lamps, and major kitchen appliances (fridge, stove, and microwave). There are NO televisions, dishes, pots, pans, linens (bed sheets, liners, pillows), or towels provided. These items may be brought from home or purchased after arrival. The ALI Housing Coordinator will contact the student when an application is received, AND when reservations are made, even if the student is not assigned a room in Sanctuary. If there is no space available in Sanctuary, ALI will notify the student or student s agent and provide other housing options. RESERVATION DATES: Reservation dates are fixed and must cover a MINIMUM of one semester. If students plan to stay longer than one semester, the ALI Housing Coordinator will contact all residents approximately halfway through each semester and provide instructions on how to extend the contract. Sanctuary is NOT for short-term study or IEC Flexible Entry students.
TENOCHCA RESIDENCE HALL (DORMITORY) COSTS The prices are for double rooms with shared bathrooms with a limited meal plan, unless otherwise stated. All students will share a bedroom with one other ALI student and a bathroom with a full floor of students. (For more information on meals, please see Page 2 under Meals.) All housing contracts must begin on a Sunday and end on a Saturday. (If you arrive or leave in the middle of a week, you will be charged for the whole week.) The minimum contract period must equal one full term or the whole term of your studies at ALI (the dates of study on your I-20). The current standard prices for DOUBLE ROOMS are listed below and are effective through Fall 2012. There are NO private (single) rooms in Tenochca. Double Room = 2 people per bedroom and a shared community bathroom; each student is charged the price below. Check-in at Tenochca is from 9 am to 9 pm. Please schedule your flight to arrive into San Diego accordingly. You must move out of your room before 12 pm on the Saturday after your program ends. MEALS Students will have a full meal plan Monday through Friday for their own use. Students may not share a meal plan or student ID card with any other student. There will be NO MEALS during the SUMMER term nor on the WEEKENDS (Saturday & Sunday). The meal plan allows students to spend $19.25 per day at any of the on-campus fast-food restaurants or cafeterias Monday through Friday only. Students can spend the $19.25 at one time or in multiple purchases throughout the day. Unused portions of the $19.25 daily allotment CANNOT BE TRANSFERRED to the next day and are NOT REFUNDABLE. Students may have a different meal plan and meal schedule during the first 1-3 weeks of their residence hall package, depending on the session and program. Meal services may be reduced or stopped over national holidays and school break periods. These closures are accounted for in the overall price. ROOM ASSIGNMENTS Room assignments are given to students upon arrival at the residence hall. Students will share a room with another ALI student. We will try to accommodate special requests for roommates, but there is no guarantee that you will get a roommate who meets your request. Tenochca reserves the right to make any changes in room or building assignments whenever they choose to do so. If students wish to change their room, there is a $100 Room Change Fee and they MUST receive authorization from the ALI Student Life Office BEFORE they can change.
I. DINING SERVICES This housing package includes a meal plan for weekdays only, Monday through Friday. (Please see above under Meals for more information.) NOTE: SDSU on-campus restaurants and cafeterias have a wide selection of food available. However, they cannot accommodate special diets. No reduction of housing fees are permissible and refunds will not be given because of dietary or other related problems. TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF YOUR MEAL PLAN 1. Your SDSU ID card, which is used to access your meal plan, must be presented to the cashier at the on-campus restaurant or cafeteria of your choice for each purchase and whenever requested by a member of the SDSU Residence Hall or Dining Services staff. 2. Your SDSU ID card may be used for $19.25 per day, 5 days per week, Monday through Friday. Exceptions to this may occur the first 1-3 weeks of the program and during school breaks and holidays. (Please see above under Meals for more information.) When you arrive at Tenochca you will be given detailed information about your meal plan in a letter from the ALI Student Life Coordinator. 3. Dining hours and facilities are subject to change. Service is subject to the schedule of SDSU, the Cuicacalli Dining Room, and SDSU Dining Services. Meal services are typically stopped or reduced over national holidays and SDSU school vacations. 4. Meal plans are not transferable. You may NOT give or transfer your meals to another student. If another student uses your ID card for meals, the SDSU Residence Hall or Dining Service staff will take your ID card and your meal plan may be cancelled with no refund. 5. There are NO REFUNDS for unused portions of your daily allowance, and unused portions are not transferable to the next day. 6. No dishes, utensils or food may be taken outside of a cafeteria. Boxed meals or sick trays may be available if arranged in advance. II. HEALTH REQUIREMENTS 1. You must provide proof of measles and rubella immunizations. This is only required if you are offered a space in Tenochca. Students who have already received this vaccine may fax proof of the vaccine to the ALI Student Life Office. Students who have not received this vaccine must receive the vaccine by the end of their first session at ALI. Students may receive the measles and rubella vaccine at SDSU Health Services after they arrive in San Diego. 2. You must complete and sign an informational form about meningococcal disease and return it to the ALI Student Life Office. This is only required if you are offered a space in Tenochca. Students receiving a space in Tenochca will be sent the necessary information and form at the same time they are sent the Tenochca Residence Hall Contract. You should return the signed sheet regarding meningococcal disease to the ALI Student Life Office together with the contract. HEALTH REQUIREMENTS If you receive a space in Tenochca, you must send the following to the ALI Student Life Office: 1) Proof that you have received measles and rubella immunizations 2) Signed form about meningococcal disease. We will remind you of these requirements when we send you the housing contract. III. MAINTENANCE OF PREMISES AND DAMAGE TO PROPERTY 1. You agree to give reasonable care to your room and its furnishings. After you check out of your room, the cost of any damages to the room or furnishings, exclusive of normal wear and tear, will be billed to you, the Student.
2. You agree to be jointly responsible with other residents for the protection of the residence hall, its furnishings and equipment. 3. You shall not attach any object to the premises by nails, screws, or otherwise, or alter the premises in any manner whatsoever without the prior consent of Tenochca staff. IV. TERMINATION OF OCCUPANCY 1. Failure to pay fees in advance shall result in termination of this Agreement and the release of your housing space to another student. 2. Failure to abide by the rules and regulations of SDSU, Tenochca, or ALI will lead to possible termination of your housing with NO REFUND and only a one-day notice of your dismissal from Tenochca. 3. Tenochca and ALI may revoke this Agreement for any reason by giving not more than a one-day written notice to the Student. Notice shall be served personally to the Student, placed under the student s room door, or, at the discretion of Tenochca, be posted in some suitable place upon the housing facility of the Student. 4. A Student s request to cancel or terminate this Agreement must be made in writing to the ALI Student Life Office and will ONLY be accepted if there is another person to take your space in the residence hall. Termination of this Agreement or the Student's abandonment of the premises shall not release the Student from fees due to ALI and Tenochca/SDSU Housing. V. ROOM CHECK-IN AND CHECK-OUT 1. CHECK-IN IS ON SUNDAY FROM 9 AM TO 9 PM (the Sunday before your academic program starts). When checking in to your room, go directly to Tenochca. There will be someone at the front desk to help you. DO NOT COME TO THE ALI OFFICE to check in; our office is closed in the evenings and on the weekends. If you will be checking in outside the allotted time (before 9 am or after 9 pm), please contact the ALI Student Life Coordinator to confirm that there will be someone available to check you in upon your arrival. On arrival, if there are any damages or missing furniture or linens, please inform Tenochca, or you will be charged on your security deposit credit card when you check out. 2. CHECK-OUT MUST BE COMPLETED ON SATURDAY BEFORE 12 PM (the Saturday after your program ends). When checking out of your room, you will need to make an appointment with a Tenochca Resident Advisor to have your room examined and to turn in your keys, towels, and linens. DO NOT COME TO THE ALI OFFICE to check out of your room; our office is closed on the weekends. Please make sure all your furniture is in your room and in the same position as it was upon arrival or you may be charged on your security deposit. The Student shall immediately and properly vacate the premises of the residence hall upon the end date of this Agreement or upon termination for the failure to meet the provisions of this Agreement. IF YOU STAY LONGER THAN THE PERIOD STATED IN YOUR CONTRACT WITHOUT REQUESTING AN EXTENSION FROM THE ALI STUDENT LIFE OFFICE IN ADVANCE, YOU WILL BE CHARGED A $50 PENALTY FEE IN ADDITION TO THE WEEKLY FLEXIBLE ENTRY PRICE. VI. RULES & REGULATIONS 1. Alcohol is not allowed in Tenochca and any consumption of alcohol or inappropriate behavior involving alcohol in the residence hall (like parties and/or disrespect for Resident Advisors) may result in your dismissal from the Tenochca with the possibility of no refund. 2. Animals. You cannot bring or keep any animal other than fish in the residence hall. 3. Candles & Other Flammable Materials. You cannot bring or keep any highly flammable materials (candles, incense, firearms, ammunition, fireworks, or explosives) in Tenochca. 4. Check-in & Check-out. You will be checked in to your room by a Tenochca staff member upon arrival. They will give you your keys and/or access card. You will receive information from the ALI Student Life Coordinator about
how to check out of your room approximately 2 weeks before your departure. You MUST check-out formally with a Tenochca Resident Advisor before leaving your room. You MAY NOT leave your keys and/or access card with your roommate, the front desk, or anyone else in Tenochca without properly checking out. IMPORTANT: Failure to properly check out at the end of your reservation WILL result in an improper check-out fee. 5. Cooking & Appliances. Each room has a small refrigerator and microwave. Other cooking equipment is NOT allowed (NO rice cookers, coffeepots, propane stoves or hot plates). Personal heaters are also not allowed. 6. Gambling is prohibited in Tenochca. 7. Guests, including residents of other residence halls, must be checked in by the resident at the Tenochca front desk. Guests must present a photo ID. You must escort your visitors and guests at all times. You will be responsible for the conduct of your guests and visitors at all times. Overnight guest(s) privilege is extended to all residents on a temporary and occasional basis only AFTER securing approval from his/her roommate and registering the guest(s) at the hall desk. Overnight guests must be housed only in your room. An overnight guest is considered anyone whose visit begins between the hours of 9 pm and 6 am and whose visit lasts more than 6 hours. A guest may stay in a residence hall no more than 2 nights per calendar month. A guest fee will be charged to the resident for any guest whose stay exceeds this limit. The University reserves the right to deny access to any person. 8. Illegal Drugs and drug paraphernalia (including marijuana, bongs, hookahs, pipes, etc.) are not allowed in Tenochca and will result in your dismissal from Tenochca with the possibility of no refund. 9. Keys. Lost or stolen keys/cards must be reported at the Tenochca front desk immediately and a lock change will be ordered. You will be charged a fee for any lost items. If you are locked out, a member of the residence staff will assist you in entering the residence hall or your room and you will be charged an entry fee, regardless of the reason. If you do not properly check out at the end of your housing reservation, you will be charged a lost key/card fee. 10. Noise. During non-quiet Hour times, you and your guests must limit noise so as not to unreasonably disturb other residents. Loud talking or group gatherings that disturb others is not permitted. Loud music and loud instruments are prohibited at all times in Tenochca. 11. Quiet Hours During Quiet Hours, you and your guests must limit noise so that you cannot be heard outside your individual rooms. During Quiet Hours, noise levels are also limited in all public areas, such as the swimming pool and lounges. 12. Smoking is NOT allowed in and around Tenochca, including lounges, recreation rooms and swimming pool areas. If you smoke, you MUST smoke outside of Tenochca and MUST be more than 20 feet/6 meters from all doors and windows of Tenochca. VII. ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS 1. As a resident of Tenochca, you are expected to act as a good neighbor. This means that your conduct should be lawful and respectful of others at all times. 2. You cannot sublet your space in Tenochca to another student. 3. SDSU, Tenochca, and the American Language Institute assume no responsibility for any loss of the Student s property in Tenochca due to theft, damage, or natural disaster. 3. The staff of Tenochca and the American Language Institute will have the right to enter the Student s room for the purposes of emergency, health, safety, maintenance, enforcement of residence hall rules and regulations, or for any other lawful purpose. The staff shall exercise these rights reasonably and with respect for your right to be free from unreasonable searches and intrusions into study or privacy.
PENALTY FOR NOT FOLLOWING THE RULES OF TENOCHCA All students residing in Tenochca must agree to abide by all rules and regulations adopted by Tenochca, SDSU, the American Language Institute, and California State Law. Failure to abide by these standards may lead to penalties ranging from loss of privileges in Tenochca, to dismissal from Tenochca with NO REFUND, to total expulsion from the ALI program with NO REFUND. If a Student fails to abide by these rules and/or to properly maintain the property of Tenochca, the Student will be charged damage fees on their security deposit credit card and/or may be dismissed from Tenochca with NO REFUND. INFORMATION REGARDING ALL OPTIONS DEPOSIT: A rental deposit is not paid in advance; however, if you receive a space in the apartments, we require you to give us your credit card information on the Housing Contract. HOW TO PAY: The total housing amount must be paid with one payment. Monthly payments are not permitted. Fees can be paid before a student s arrival -OR- during the first week of the program at ALI registration. The total amount due is stated on the contract. NO PAYMENTS SHOULD BE MADE until a housing contract is completed. ROOM REQUESTS: Room requests cannot be guaranteed, but we will do our best to accommodate students according to their first choice. You will have the best chance of receiving housing if you 1) send in your application as soon as possible 2) are willing to live with students from your home country. CHECK-IN & CHECK-OUT: Checking in and out of Fraternity Row, Piedra del Sol, or Sanctuary will be at the contract start and end dates, between 9am and 4pm. Appointments MUST be made in advance with the ALI Housing Coordinator. More information will be given at least two weeks prior to the student s arrival date. If you are not able to check in within that time frame, please contact the ALI Housing Office at alihousing@mail.sdsu.edu. Checking in and out of Tenochca will be done at the Front Desk of the dormitory. You do not need to come to the ALI office.
