Job Title: Location/Base: Dept.: Reporting to: Pharmacy Technician Claremont Hospital Pharmacy Pharmacy Manager 1. JOB PURPOSE The Pharmacy Technician, as part of a dedicated team, plays a key role in the provision of a comprehensive and profitable pharmaceutical service for the hospital and ensures that a high standard of pharmaceutical care is provided for all patients. 2. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES PRINCIPAL DUTIES: To work within the limits of own competence, taking responsibility for own actions and demonstrate awareness of the commercial impact of actions on the pharmacy department as well as the rest of the hospital To ensure all resources are used efficiently and effectively To support the Pharmacists in Medicines Reconciliation To be involved in the general day to day duties of the Pharmacy e.g. processing owing prescriptions, sale of over- the- counter medicines, receiving orders, charging of inpatients and day- case patients and disposal of medicines in accordance with statutory requirements To assist in the dispensing process for inpatients and outpatients ensuring quality and accuracy and minimising the risk of harm to self, other staff members and patients To provide medicines advice to patients within their level of competence under the supervision of a registered pharmacist/medical practitioner To proactively identify the needs and expectations of customers and strive to meet these and provide an excellent quality of customer care To assist in the ordering of stock from wholesalers and pharmaceutical companies and in the negotiation of discounts Stock control: namely participation in stocktake, using the expiry date checking scheme, promoting rational ordering, the processing of invoices for payment, updating prices and dealing with issues and anomalies as they arise To assemble and execute monthly stock evaluation reports including negative stock lists, high cost lists and any other departmental performance reports which may be required To ensure that the Emergency Drug Stations/trollies throughout the hospital are maintained on a regular basis To monitor Pharmacy refrigerator temperatures and general storage and security of pharmaceutical products throughout the hospital ensuring any problems are escalated to a senior member of staff To assist in the stock top- up process to both the wards and the Theatre Department. This involves the close monitoring of stock usage and levels in these location Pharmacy Technician Page 1 of 6

To be proactively committed to developing own personal skills, knowledge and behaviours as well as contribute to the development of other members of staff in the department To effectively monitor and maintain health, safety and security of self and others GENERAL DUTIES To work collaboratively with pharmacy and medical staff, the multidisciplinary team and management and to participate in the natural agenda for pharmacy services in accordance with the agreed objectives To identify and manage risks in relation to medicines use according to policy/protocol To delegate duties / responsibilities appropriately to other staff To identify changes in prescribing practices that may have an impact on the ward / pharmacy stock lists and overall department budget To participate in the development of the service via contributions to guideline design and implementation, clinical auditing and representation at certain hospital committees To monitor clinical pharmacy in order to ensure safe, clinically effective and cost efficient use of drugs in these patients To document the workload of pharmacy services in line with departmental and corporate objectives To undertake clinical audit To undertake competency assessments / evaluations as required To identify own training needs To maintain a portfolio of practice To participate in in- service clinical pharmacy teaching and multi- disciplinary teaching as appropriate To maintain a broad level of pharmacy practice To participate in education and training programmes to develop skills as part of a commitment to continuing education OTHER DUTIES To be available for Saturday and late- shift work when required, as well as holiday cover and on- call duties on an occasional basis To assist in day- to- day pharmacy duties, namely stock control, the ordering/receipt process, controlled drug stock checks and monitoring drug usage across the hospital To provide other duties as specified/ designated by the Pharmacy Manager 3. Patient information, in any form is confidential. This means that information should only be shared or accessed by someone with a legitimate reason, related to the care of the patient. Information about members of staff or others in relation to sensitive issues, such as appraisals, investigations, complaints or payroll details is also confidential. All staff must always maintain confidentiality when dealing with sensitive material and information of this nature and immediately report any potential confidentiality issues that may arise.
