Location and Campus Location Our centre is located on the beautiful campus of Occidental College and is one of the oldest liberal arts schools on the West Coast. Situated approximately 30 minutes away from Los Angeles, it provides an excellent location for our summer school within easy travelling distance of the major airports and the sights that Los Angeles has to offer. Local attractions include Hollywood, Disneyland and Universal Studios. Accommodation The accommodation in Occidental College is arranged in traditional dormitory style rooms, in twin or triple rooms and shared bathrooms (ratio 1:8). Rooms are equipped with beds, closets, desks and dressers for each student. Cleaning of communal areas including toilet facilities are cleaned 5 days a week (Monday Friday). Students are responsible for keeping their rooms neat as they are only cleaned before arrival. Linens are changed weekly. Students will be responsible for bringing their dirty linens to a designated area on a specified day to exchange for fresh linens. Facilities Occidental has a number of good facilities within the campus and the surrounding area including: Classrooms: These are located in separate buildings on campus (near the Embassy Summer office area) and vary in shape and size. Dining Hall: The Johnson Student Centre offers a variety of all-you-can eat meals such as, hot entrées, vegetarian meals, soups, salads, fruits and desserts. Self-service in the large, spacious dining room. Sports facilities: Embassy makes use of an outdoor swimming pool, baseball field access at a local park and basketball court; There is a separate social space used for activities such as dance workshops and discos. Common areas: All are smoke-free and equipped with high speed wireless internet access. Email Students have access to email via the school s Wi-Fi network free of charge. There is a computer room in the residence hall. The Programme Overview A week at Occidental College is divided between lessons (15 hours), onsite activities, prepaid excursions and additional optional trips. Typical teaching times 09.00 10:00 10:10-11:10 11:30 12:30 Activities Typical lesson structure Presentation of theme or grammar point or development of this from a previous lesson Consolidation and free practice of areas covered in the first lesson Skills lesson to encourage fluency and build confidence; project lesson on American culture and excursions When students are not in class or on an excursion they take part in activities in and around our Occidental College Centre which may include: Sports such as swimming, soccer, American football, volleyball, ultimate frisbee, softball, kickball and basketball Non sporting activities such as treasure hunts, mask making and hip hop dance Local visits to parks, baseball games, downtown Burbank, downtown Pasadena and other optionals such as off-site bowling. Evening activities such as international night, discos, casino and game nights, quizzes, talent shows, scavenger hunts and karaoke. Please note that transportation is not included for local visits which are in addition to the inclusive programme mentioned above. Inclusive Trips The excursions included within the programme are comprised of 2 full day trips to local places of interest each week and 1 full day excursion on the weekend. All excursions are normally provided by a private transportation company; transport for optional trips is not included. Likely destinations include: Rodeo Drive and LACMA: Rodeo offers unrivalled choice of shopping, world-class galleries, and so much more then head to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Hollywood The most famous area in Los Angeles, it is the historic centre of movie studios, movie stars and American Cinema. Santa Monica & Venice Beaches or Malibu Beach: You may have seen this popular stretch of beach in hundreds of movies and TV shows. Enjoy walking, skating and bicycling along these areas. The Grammy Museum: This museum explores and celebrates the legacies of all forms of music. The Grove Farmer s Market: This famous landmark is now has a huge open-air shopping centre with over 50 upscale shops, restaurants and movie theatres. It s also a popular place for spotting Hollywood celebrities! Optional Trips In addition to the included activity & excursion programme, a range of optional extra visits and excursions are normally offered. Here are some of the optional trips offered in Occidental College Disneyland: Don t miss the Happiest Place on Earth, while in LA. Visit Walt Disney s original theme park and enjoy timeless attractions, entertainment and magical moments. Universal Studios: Enjoy non-stop entertainment, come face to face with King Kong, escape to the movies on the world-famous Studio Tour or hang on as your fly, race or crash your way through animated rides! Six Flags Magic Mountain: A 260-acre theme park featuring world-class roller coasters, over 100 rides, games and attractions. Los Angeles Occidental Guide Meal Provision Overview Further Information Transfers All meals are provided at Occidental College. American food has become much more cosmopolitan and varied with a variety of meals with consideration for special diets. Examples of meals are given below: Breakfast: Hot line and fruit bar, including up to three hot items, bread, cereal, and beverages. Hot breakfast dish may include pancakes, eggs, sausage, hash browns, etc.) Lunch: 2-course meal including: fruit juice, salad, fruit and a main course with meat or vegetarian options and vegetables.
