ibeacon TECHNOLOGY ibeacon is Apple s technology for an indoor proximity system which uses lowpowered and low-cost transmitters that can notify nearby eligible ios devices of their presence. The technology enables an iphone or ipad to perform actions when in close proximity to an ibeacon. ibeacon uses Bluetooth low energy proximity sensing to transmit a universally unique identifier picked up by a compatible app or operating system. The identifier can then be looked up over the internet to determine the device s physical location or trigger an action on the device such as a check-in on social media or a push notification. One application of this is to help an iphone or ipad determine its precise position or context. With the help of an ibeacon, your device s software can pinpoint its own location. ibeacons are beneficial to a variety of business sectors; for example, in a retail context ibeacons can enable your phone to show notifications of items nearby on sale and facilitate payments at the point of sale (POS) without the need to remove your wallet or bank card. Alternatively, with the ability to create indoor mapping systems, ibeacons can be used by museums to personalise the visitor experience. ibeacon technology works using the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology, also known as Bluetooth Smart. Throughout this brochure you will find out more about the capabilities of ibeacons, their usage in different sectors and the benefits to both consumer and business. ibeacon 4

EDUCATION Offer your students something more... promotions and discounts, notification of events and mapping to help them find their way around campus. CULTURAL SECTOR Immerse your visitors in your exhibits give them automatic access to further reading, rich media, mapping, tours and the ability to save related items in the gift shop for purchase at exit. The app can be customised for different layouts, allowing more or less visible information depending upon your preferences. Users can create personal profiles, which will save their preferences, offers and last visited maps to allow them to switch devices with ease. 5
TARGETED MARKETING Make marketing personal. Only display ads and notifications that are specific to each customer based on their shopping habits. You can also send notifications of recommended items based on the specific rail that the customer is currently browsing, taking personal shopping to the next level! 6 SOLUTIONS FOR RETAIL & LEISURE
FOOTFALL ANALYSIS & OPERATIONAL INTELLIGENCE Gain some real insight into customer behaviour based on average and group movement between beacons. Trends can then be calculated from metrics such as most popular locations (including duration of visits to specific locations), average routes around a store and heat maps based on customer transition from location to location. 7
OFFER NOTIFICATIONS & ADVERTISING Give your students something they love offers and discounts! Students can be notified of locations nearby that have current offers running, enhancing footfall to specific locations. Notifications can also be used to promote events, such as those held in on-campus bars or particular seminars, sending an alert when students pass within range of the venue where the event will be held. 8 SOLUTIONS FOR EDUCATION
MAPPING & TIMETABLE GUIDANCE No matter how long you are a student for, you never quite get the hang of navigating the campus! Using our advanced mapping system, new and old students can find their way quickly and easily around campus. This can be personalised to a student s lecture timetable, alerting them when they need to leave for their next lecture and showing them exactly how to get there. No more excuses for being late! 9
VISITOR ANALYSIS & INSIGHT Gain more insight into the behaviour and interests of your visitors by analysing footfall, determining which exhibits and exhibitions are attracting the most visits. You can also determine the average length of time a visitor spends at each exhibit, and even find trends in the movement and routes of visitors around the varying exhibits and exhibitions. 10 SOLUTIONS FOR CULTURAL SECTOR
INDOOR MAPPING & LOCAL POSITIONING SYSTEM With our advanced indoor navigation system, your visitors can locate a point of interest using a familiar and easy to use interface, which then guides them right to it. Indoor mapping also enables customers to choose between pre-defined guided tours or create their own custom guided tour based upon their own chosen points of interest. When coupled with Exhibit Information Notifications, this makes for the ultimate in personal, immersive visitor experiences. 11
BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE AND BIG DATA Academia has teamed up with Pivotal to help you and your business use your data in an insightful and intelligent way. Applications can be built that make use of data collected through interaction with ibeacon technology, so you can analyse your customers in the context of who they are, where they are and what they are doing in the moment. For example, use real time business intelligence to: Analyse footfall; monitoring busy periods of the day and routes Manage flow of people in high density areas such as airports, sports stadiums and visitor attractions Offer discounts and promotions based on previous activity This enhances your ability to make strategic business decisions. MOBILE APP DEVELOPMENT There are 8 million people using their mobile phone to access the internet every day and mobiles now account for 31% of website traffic. Given this, our in-house development team can create engaging ios friendly applications that shape user behaviour. We also work with leading partners and mobile agencies to integrate with existing strategies and platforms. 12

Case Study SmartFocus describe how they worked with one of the first shopping centres in the UK to utilise a loyalty card solution with ibeacons. THE REQUIREMENT: Ellandi, owners of The Swan Centre wanted a mobile app that would act as an engagement tool to drive more footfall into store and combat the threat of shoppers going online. They asked SmartFocus to provide a Mobile Loyalty App with a simple cloud management platform (CMP) so they could offer their shopping centre visitors rewards and offers in real-time. Using the app and Beacons they also wanted to connect with customers and understand more about shopping habits. THE SOLUTION: SmartFocus provided a white-label solution on ios. The client branded the platform SmartRewards. The on-site marketing team had 1 day of training on the CMP and were able to deliver offers from the retailers who joined the program. Once configured, the Beacons sent notifications to the customers as they walk into and around the centre. The offers are personalised so the customer only receives relevant content. 14
THE RESULTS: The shopping centre has now generated a new communication tool that has seen 2000 downloads in just two months. It has had over 6000 shares on social media. The channel is being used to promote events and communicate new initiatives for the centre. More retailers have now joined the platform. The new customer data is now being used to support the overall marketing campaign, increase footfall and dwell time. Retailers are now seeing an increase in customer spend. About SmartFocus: SmartFocus is the proximity marketing and loyalty platform that has been taking the retail world by storm. Just this year SmartFocus gained two UK firsts by deploying Beacons (ibeacons) in retail settings to communicate directly with shoppers phones as they walk around the store. www.smartfocus.com SmartFocus are one of the many agencies that Academia works with on ibeacon projects.
