Intro to Graphic Design Essential Questions Unit 1: Traditional Tools Why is it important to sketch your ideas away from the computer instead of sketching on the computer and believing your solution is resolved well after 15 minutes? Why is it important to do use your hands and traditional tools to create simple designs before jumping on to the computer? Unit 2: Type and Image together Why is it important design your project as a fully integrated design instead of just slapping the type on as an afterthought? Unit 3: History Why is it important to study the work of the great Masters, some of whom have been dead for a long time? Is their work relevant, and why? Unit 4: The Importance of Audience Why is it so crucially important to understand who the audience for a given assignment? Unit 5: Crossing over with other areas of study What does Design have to do with Math? Where might you use some principals of Math in your design project solutions? (Golden Ratio) Why is it important to understand contemporary issues today when doing a project on social awareness issues? Unit 6: Critique Why is it so important to understand the Elements and Principals of Design when looking at and analyzing examples of Graphic Design

Intro to Graphic Design Strand : Arts Disciplines: Visual Arts Topic : Critical Response 5.10 Critique their own work, the work of peers, and the work of professional artists, and demonstrate an understanding of the formal, cultural, and historical contexts of the work. I can analyze my work and the work of peers because of informal critiques and feedback from the teacher. Because of my 2 research papers (Historical and Contemporary) and those of my peers I can demonstrate an understanding of the historical aspects of graphic design Analyze a body of work, or the work of one artist, explaining its 5.11 meaning and impact on society, symbolism, and visual metaphor. I can analyze a body of work of one of the masters in graphic design after researching their life s work. I have familiarity with other masters in the field because of oral presentations from my peers on the masters they wrote about and presented Demonstrate an understanding how societal influences and prejudices 5.12 may affect viewers' ways of perceiving works of art. I have an understanding of societal influences because I am aware of the target market -- whatever group I am designing a communication piece for. Demonstrate the ability to compare and contrast two or more works of 5.8 art, orally and in writing, using appropriate vocabulary. I can compare and contrast two different pieces of graphic design, for instance: it might be the same message but to two different age groups or economic groups. Or, it might be two different messages to the same target group. 5.9 Use published sources, either traditional or electronic, to research a body of work or an artist, and present findings in written or oral form.
I can use the internet and books and magazines to research a body of work by a particular designer, because of the two research papers I have done. Topic : Drafting, Revising, and Exhibiting Demonstrate the ability to develop an idea through multiple stages, 4.10 responding to criticism and self-assessment I can analyze a design problem, make thumbnail sketches, collect visuals, develop graphics and photos, and refine my idea down to the final stages. Maintain a portfolio of artwork that demonstrates a progression of ideas 4.11 and skills over time I can show a portfolio of design work, starting with rudimentary hand-made designs, and a progression of more sophisticated work using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Choose and prepare artwork for exhibition, and be able to discuss their 4.12 choices I can choose my own work and that of my peers and arrange an exhibit that reflects the best that our class has to show. 4.13 Create a presentation portfolio that includes work in several media and that demonstrates a progression of ideas and preliminary and finished work in each medium I can show hand-made cut & paste projects and laser prints from projects designed on the computer. Demonstrate an ability to see their own personal style and discriminate 4.14 among historical and contemporary styles. I can see my own emerging style of graphic design as I do more projects, and can discriminate between the styles of the masters because of my own research and that of my peers, which they have shared.
Demonstrate the ability to draw from other disciplines in the creation of 4.15 a body of work. I can draw from other disciplines, including math (golden ration / Fibonacci numbers) and social studies (social awareness project) 4.16 Organize and present an exhibit of a body of their own work to others. 4.9 Demonstrate the ability to conceptualize, organize, and complete longterm projects, alone and in group settings. Conceptualize: plan, generate ideas, make preliminary sketches, participate in discussions, imagine outcomes, and set goals;. Organize: choose materials and techniques to attain the desired look and feel; maintain work space and personal schedule; review progress of work with others; and revise work appropriately;. Complete: prepare work for presentation or exhibition Topic : Elements and Principles of Design 2.12 Apply knowledge of color theory to a project focusing on the use of complementary colors. Be able to use values of colors in wet and dry media to create the illusion of 3D form on a 2D surface. I can confidently use color, and I understand complementary colors, because of intense review and revisiting the Color Wheel Use color, line, texture, shape, and form in 2D and 3D work and identify the use of these elements in the compositions of others. 2.13 Examples include: line as edge treatment and in patterns; color temperature, mass and volume as function of color, size, perspective; negative space; visual and surface textures. I can utilize and exploit texture and form, perspective and negative space to make successful design solutions
2.14 Review systems of visualizing information and depicting space and volume, for example, scale and vanishing point, linear, atmospheric, and isometric perspective; and create works using these systems. Create artwork that demonstrates understanding of the elements and 2.15 principles of design in establishing a point of view, a sense of space, or a mood. I understand the Elements and Principals of design and utilize them in my design solutions; like contrast, repetitive elements, rhythm, variety and balance. 2.16 Create artwork that demonstrates a purposeful use of the elements and principles of design to convey meaning and emotion. Create artwork that demonstrates facility in selective use of elements and 2.17 principles of design to establish a personal style. Though this is an intro class I can see that I am developing a style that is somewhat unique to me. Topic : Methods, Materials, and Techniques 1.10 Use electronic technology for reference and for creating original work. I use advanced software to create design solutions, and I can research what source materials I need to solve design problems Explore a single subject through a series of works, varying the medium 1.11 or technique. I can create in-depth studies of words and concepts by using typography elements
1.12 Describe and apply procedures to ensure safety and proper maintenance of the workspace, materials, and tools. 1.13 Make reasonable choices of 2D and 3D media, materials, tools, and techniques to achieve desired effects in specific projects. 1.14 Demonstrate a mastery of tools and techniques in one medium I can use the computer and software programs (and printer) to get my work done 1.15 Describe and apply procedures for the safe and proper maintenance of the workspace, materials, and tools; identify potential health hazards associated with materials and techniques, and possible substitutes for hazardous materials. 1.9 Demonstrate the ability to create 2D and 3D works that show knowledge of unique characteristics of particular media, materials, and tools. Topic : Observation, Abstraction, Invention, and Expression 3.10 Create 2D and 3D images that are original, convey a distinct point of view, and communicate ideas.
Demonstrate the ability to portray emotions and personality through the 3.11 rendering of physical characteristics in 2D and 3D work. Through the use of shapes, color, typography, graphics and photography I can portray specific emotions and personality 3.12 Demonstrate the ability to use representation, abstraction, or symbolism to create 2D and 3D artwork that conveys a personal point of view about issues and ideas. 3.8 Create representational 2D artwork from direct observation and from memory that convincingly portrays 3D space and the objects and people within that space. 3.9 Create 2D and 3D artwork that explores the abstraction of ideas and representations.
