3 VISION STATEMENT Pencils and books are not enough in today s classrooms. Educators face the challenge of finding creative ways to keep students engaged, through inventive uses of technology that make learning not feel like learning. Adobe s Creative Suite Dreamweaver software package offers education solutions that combine industry- standard technology with standards- aligned curriculums, certification programs to validate skills, and professional- level training. An active online community provides additional support through forums, blogs, and more. Student learning is greatly facilitated by integrating the right technology into the educational experience. Students are empowered to better express themselves and showcase their knowledge. By working with technology as part of project- based curriculums, students easily develop the essential, lifelong digital communication skills they will need in virtually all their academic and professional pursuits. 1
4 MISSION STATEMENT The Web Design course is based on Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 software, the industry- leading Web authoring program. The Creative Suite software package delivers powerful, industry standard, image- editing tools for students and designers who want to produce sophisticated graphics for the Web and for print. In Web Design, students will learn how to create and manage Websites, build rich interactive interfaces, incorporate graphics, text, video and much more! This course will also provide opportunities for students to integrate Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop software, to create digital imaging projects: That develops a perceptual awareness and discrimination, which fosters an appreciation of our environment, thereby contributing to the quality of life Which furthers the development of self- esteem and self- image, where conformity is non- essential and individuality is encouraged To identify historical, social, and cultural influences and traditions, which generated artistic accomplishment throughout the ages and which continue to shape contemporary arts To expose students to other cultures past and present That addresses individual student growth Which develops manipulative and technical skills in the area of graphic design Where concepts can be integrated with other learning experiences To identify and solve problems in visual and technology areas That promotes confidence, enthusiasm, and a sense of achievement in the practice of art, design, and technology. Web Design is a one semester offering open to all 9-12 grade students and earn 2.5 credits towards graduation. It integrates standards from other disciplines, as well as addressing the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards for the Visual and Performing Arts, 21 st Century Life and Careers, and Technology Literacy. The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards can be accessed at 2
5 COURSE PROFICIENCIES COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. To utilize prior knowledge and skills that strengthens and heightens aesthetic awareness in the visual arts. (D1-2; A1-2; D1-5; 8.1/12B1-4, D1-4; A1-3, F1-4; 9.2/12A1-5) 2. To evaluate works of art based on aesthetic principles and artistic elements, using higher- order thinking skills. (D1-2; D1-5; 1.4/12A1-4; 9.2/12A1-5) 3. To apply prior knowledge of the elements, media, and unique qualities that encompasses the visual arts. (D1-2; D1-5; 1.4/12A1-4; 9.2/12A1-5) 4. 6 STUDENT PROFICIENCIES The student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate skills in the operation of computer hardware and graphic software. 2. Demonstrate an aesthetic awareness of the graphic design field and uses of this medium of expression to create art. 3. Practice and demonstrate self- discipline and analytical skills, as well as familiarity with the critique process. 4. Navigate through graphics design software, utilizing program tools and features. 5. Examine and identify various art careers in the field of technology. 6. Demonstrate further development of skills learned in art, computer science, web design, and photography through individual and collaborative work. 7. Develop a digital portfolio of work representing personal achievement associated with graphic design, developing and using the skills of critiquing during the process. 8. Understand and utilize the safe use of art materials and technology. 4
7 METHODS OF EVALUATION I. Production A. Craftsmanship: Evidence of skillful and appropriate use of materials. B. Understanding 1. Demonstrate understanding of elements and principles of design. 2. Rendering skills as demonstrated in such things as the ability to make recognizable imagery, balance, etc., as appropriate. C. Experimentation with imagery materials. 3. Risk- taking pushing beyond the limitations. 4. Divergent thinking, exploring unusual and diverse solutions to problems. D.
