Design for Independent Schools

Developing Your School Re-Format is an award-winning architecture and design studio which has been specialising in buildings for the education sector for twenty years. We have an established reputation that is underpinned by our extensive knowledge and experience of creating and delivering inspirational learning environments. Our education design portfolio encompasses Primary, Secondary and University level learning spaces, from classroom refurbishment to complete new school buildings. Having worked across both the state and independent sectors, we recognise the specific challenges that face our clients. This understanding derives from a consistent approach to the client engagement process, strategic appraisal of the project and the definition of a clear comprehensive brief. We ensure that our designs not only realise the full potential of the school s environment, but are robust in providing practical, cost-effective and sustainable solutions that address the needs of today and seek to anticipate those in the future. Re-Format has the knowledge and technical expertise to offer our clients a complete integrated service to ensure the best value design.

Maintaining High Standards The Challenge: Independent schools are proud of their high standards of education, facilities and culture and the challenge is to reflect this in the quality of the built environment. Good architecture can embody the traditions and ethos of the school, create good first impressions and provide an inspiring place to work. The Solution: Re-Format believes that well designed facilities contribute to an institution s competitive edge, retain good quality staff and provide attractive teaching spaces where pupils remain alert and engaged, improving academic performance. Our award winning designs are all unique in style, responding sensitively to each individual context and set of aspirations. In addition to educational buildings, Re-Format has experience of specialist buildings including theatres, swimming pools, sports buildings and libraries - both refurbishment and new build.

Exceeding Expectations The Challenge: To provide modern, effective learning environments for the changing nature of education and pedagogy whilst ensuring the culture and tradition of the school is maintained. Buildings need to be flexible and multi-functional to meet the needs of today, respond to change and appeal to future generations. The Solution: Re-Format has extensive knowledge and experience of providing exceptional learning environments. This is achieved through clear communication, detailed analysis, building relationships and intelligent consultation and presentation methods. Through this process, we provide clear advice on viable options and innovative solutions to achieve the full potential of the school s environment, whilst meeting the required design, function and cost criteria. Our client testimonials highlight our ability to exceed expectations.

Understanding Your School The Challenge: The legacy and heritage of many independent schools can bring with it complex estates that have evolved over long periods of time, with differing ages and styles often bringing challenges in efficiency, cohesiveness and estate management. New development can lack coherence and continuity whilst not addressing all problem areas. The Solution: Re-Format will undertake a development plan or masterplan as the best tool to understand the school as a whole and provide a strategy for development, balancing the immediate requirements with the long term view. This comes from an in-depth analysis of the school, its heritage and the current buildings and landscape. It will look at the spatial organisation of uses, rationalisation of the layout, the entrance and routes around the school, area analysis, building quality, conservation and improvements to services.

Working in Historical Environments The Challenge: Extensive heritage and tradition often brings with it an historic built environment with great civic presence. New development within sensitive sites needs to balance tradition and heritage with modern learning. It also needs to be a reflection and continuation of the school s history. Existing buildings may be listed, increasing the complexity of the development process. The Solution: Historical sites and listed buildings require both knowledge of architectural conservation and design sensitivity to be able to successfully integrate new with old. Re-Format has undertaken numerous complex projects in historic settings that have required extensive consultation and careful close management of the development process in conjunction with conservation advisers and English Heritage. Increasingly, a comprehensive conservation plan can not only underpin our strategic work, but prove invaluable in developing the long term potential of school estates. We have, to date, maintained an absolute record of successful planning outcomes over a portfolio of more than a hundred education projects.

Unlocking Site Potential The Challenge: Accessing capital School estates can be asset-rich but require a sensitive and knowledgeable approach to unlock potential capital to facilitate new building works. Development needs to work hard to ensure value for money within the competitive environment of the independent sector. The Solution: Re-Format has extensive experience of looking at options to release capital. A second specialism within the practice is residential and mixed-use development, and we can use our town planning expertise to look at maximising the potential revenue from land disposal, without compromising the overall setting of the estate.

Sustainable Design The Challenge: Existing building stock and historic estates often present a significant burden in terms of operational costs. The Solution: We create imaginative, innovative environments underpinned by the principles of rigorous sustainability. Re-Format implements an environmental checklist as part of the briefing process for all projects. On at least 50% of our schemes we have facilitated an increase in the BREEAM output brief by one rating. We aim to reduce your school s energy consumption and create healthy environments for learning and teaching. In all our projects we provide designs that are energy efficient and can make a significant contribution in mitigating the overall cost of the estate.

Space Utilisation The Challenge: A significant emerging issue for school estates is lack of space either for additional buildings or parking. Space optimisation is key to future planning it may no longer be possible to think in terms of outward expansion of the estate. The Solution: Flexible and adaptable solutions, whether new buildings or refurbishment, are needed to achieve optimum levels of utilisation. There are many lessons learned from our Further and Higher Education experience where efficient use of space is often key to realising a successful project. Upgrading existing facilities can sometimes prove to be the most effective in terms of cost and time.

Renewed Visual Brand The Challenge: Independent schools are in a highly competitive market and are required to acknowledge that brand identity is an essential part of marketing. The redevelopment of the school s built environment is often an ideal opportunity to look at refreshing its visual brand in order to safeguard a strong public image and to convey a recognisable, professional identity. The Solution: Re-Format has a successful graphic design department that can guide schools through a review of all aspects of visual identity to enhance and strengthen image. We have a wealth of experience of school brand design including signage, logos, stationery, websites, prospectuses and marketing brochures. An homogenous approach such as this creates both cohesiveness and distinctiveness.
