The Vikings will take a 3-6 record to CSU Bakersfield for a Tuesday night game. The Roadrunners, members of the Western Athletic Conference, have had a solid start to the season with a 7-4 record. PSU s losing skid has included two home games and two road games. Three of the four have been tight contests, including the last two which the Vikings have led at halftime. Portland State has been hindered alternately by either poor shooting or ball-handling mistakes. The Vikings had a 40-36 halftime lead over CSUN on Thursday night after shooting 64% in the first half. But a 28% shooting second-half spelled their doom in a 77-71 loss to the Matadors. Positive signs included a career-high 21 points from JR G Calaen Robinson on seven three-pointers, and the return of JR G Bryce White (10 points, 5 assists) from injury. CSU Bakersfield has seen good times in recent weeks, winning four of its last five games. The Roadrunners are 6-0 at home this season. Portland State and CSU Bakersfield have not had any common opponents this season. Tuesday s game is a 7 p.m. tip. Live video, audio and stats can be found at GoViks.com by clicking on the Game Day box. Portland State hosts one more non-conference game on Dec. 29. Cal State Fullerton (currently 7-3) of the Big West Conference comes to the Stott Center. COMING UP Big Sky Conference play begins on Jan. 2 when the Vikings host Sacramento State at the Stott Center. After that, the Vikings will play five of their next seven games during the month of January on the road. Stott Stuff PSU has gone 152-58 in 210 games at the Stott Center since the 1996-97 season. Including home games at Memorial Coliseum (12-6) and the Rose Garden (19-9), the Vikings are 183-73 at home over 20 seasons. Portland State is 59-29 at home in seven seasons under Tyler Geving. PSU is 105-51 in home games, 50-108 in road games and 3-7 in neutral site games. PSU is 71-67 in Big Sky games since the start of the 2007-08 season, 78-71 including tournament games. And The Trivial Portland State is 27-24 all-time in overtime. Coach Tyler Geving is 5-4 all-time in overtime. PSU is 2-15 against nationally-ranked opponents since joining the Big Sky Conference in 1996-97. Head Coach Tyler Geving is 1-2 all-time against ranked opponents. Portland State is 19-43 in games televised in the Portland area since joining the Big Sky Conference in 1996-97. That includes a 9-7 home record and 10-36 road record. WHO IS HOT? JR G Calaen Robinson scored a career-high 21 points against CSUN. Robinson was 6-6 on three-pointers in the first half and 7-11 overall. He also had four assists in the game. SO F Isaiah Pineiro is shooting.582 from the field to lead the Vikings and rank fifth in the Big Sky Conference. Pineiro has averaged 13.3 points and shot.600 over the last three games. GR G Donivine Stewart has only three turnovers in 155 minutes of play this season. His assist-to-turnover ratio is 18/3. He has only one turnover in the last four games. WHO IS NOT? Portland State is shooting.642 from the free throw line this season. The Vikings have shot.623 at the line during their four-game losing streak. The Vikings have lost four in a row. GR F Cameron Forte has made 17-50 shots (.340) during the Vikings four-game losing streak. PSU s top returning scorer from last season, JR F Braxton Tucker has missed the entire season while recovering from injury. HANDLE IT!: Turnovers have been a concern for Coach Tyler Geving this year. The Vikings are averaging 14.8 turnovers per game. Last season, that number was only 11.1 per game... the high turnover total is one reason Geving inserted GR G Donivine Stewart into the starting lineup at point guard against CSUN. Stewart has only three turnovers this season. A DIFFERENT LOOK: Head Coach Tyler Geving started his fifth different lineup in nine games on Thursday night. The only constants have been JR G Zach Gengler and SR C Collin Spickerman who have started all nine games. Eight different players have started games and those players average between 19 and 27 minutes per game... last season the Vikings had 10 different starting lineups in 29 games with 10 different players earning starts. MR. ROBINSON S NEIGHBORHOOD: JR G Calaen Robinson has alternated between playing the point and shooting guard this season as Coach Tyler Geving looks for the right fit. On Thursday night it was shooting guard as Robinson hit seven three-pointers on his way to a career-high 21 points. Robinson leads the Vikings in three-point field goals (22) and assists (34). Robinson s 11 assists against Multnomah were the most by a Viking since Feb. 5, 2009. Robinson has five double-figure scoring games. 2015-16 Viking Basketball 3

Forte ranks in the top five in the Big Sky in scoring and rebounding. Forte has three 20-point games and one 30-point game. He has three double-doubles on the season. SWAT STATS: SR C Collin Spickerman set a PSU record for blocked shots per game (2.48) last season while leading the Big Sky Conference. Spickerman has 16 blocks this season and 88 blocks in 38 career games, ranking fourth in PSU history. Spickerman ranks third in the Big Sky in blocked shots (1.8). Spickerman blocked four shots and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds in the season opener at Grand Canyon (11/13). Spickerman scored a career-high 15 points at SIUE (12/12). He has two games of four or more blocked shots. PICKING UP HIS PLAY: Head Coach Tyler Geving has called for more offense from JR G Zach Gengler this year after he was the Vikings top perimeter defender last year. JR G Calaen Robinson scored 13 points with two assists in 13 minutes against Pacific Lutheran. The Viking bench scored 62 points and had 32 rebounds in 104 total minutes against PLU. The Vikings have signed Tyrell Henderson of Tempe, AZ and Brendan Rumel of Tucson, AZ during the early signing period. We are excited about signing two kids who are outstanding students and who are both high character kids, said Geving. They are both very disciplined on and off the court and these are traits we are looking for in our recruits. These are two players we expect to be big contributors over the next four years. Henderson is a 6-3 combo guard who attends Corona del Sol High School. He is part of a program that has routinely won state championships. It is also the former high school of current Viking guard Calaen Robinson. Tyrell comes from Corona Del Sol program where they have won four consecutive Arizona State Championships, said Geving. He brings a winning attitude to our program as well as being an outstanding student. Tyrell is a versatile player who takes pride in guarding the other teams top player. He has a high basketball IQ and I m excited to coach him over the next four years. Rumel, a 6-10 forward, plays at Rincon High School. As a junior he averaged 17.8 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game. He also has shooting range for a big man, hitting 25 three-pointers over the past two seasons. Any time we can get a high school kid with height and skill, we feel very fortunate, Geving said. Bren- 2015-16 Viking Basketball 4

PSU ranked 25th in the nation in free throw percentage (.742) last season, coming within.0006 of setting a school record (.7424 to.7430 in 2012-13). Collin Spickerman led the Big Sky Conference in blocked shots in 2014-15, with 72 swats. His 2.5 average per game also set a Portland State record. JR G Zach Gengler had only 15 turnovers in 415 minutes of playing time last season (1.4 per 40 minutes). In his two seasons, Gengler has only 30 turnovers in 52 games played. Portland State was 4-0 in its non-conference home games in 2014-15. The Vikings have lost only six non-conference home games in the last nine seasons (39-6). As a result, PSU will not travel to Northern Arizona and Southern Utah this season, and will not host North Dakota and Northern Colorado. VIKING ONE-LINERS (and sometimes two) PSU has three players that competed for other Division I schools: Calaen Robinson (Arizona State), Cameron Forte (Georgia) and Donivine Stewart (SIUE). PSU played basketball from 1946-1981 before discontinuing the program. Basketball was reinstated for the 1996-97 season. Construction of the new The Viking Pavilion will begin in January 2016. The Pavilion will consist of an upgraded Stott Center facility, including a new arena for Viking basketball, as well as athletic training enhancements, academic upgrades and overall facility enhancements. The Viking Pavilion will more than double the capacity of PSU s home court (to be situated on the east side of the building) to somewhere between 3,000-4,000 seats. The arena is expected to be available for play beginning in January 2018. Portland State received public recognition from the NCAA in 2014 for being among the top 10 percent of teams in multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores for the four-year period ending in 2012-13. PSU basketball, which received APR sanctions six years ago, is now among the top programs in the nation in APR scores. Head Coach Tyler Geving has led the program to that accomplishment. PSU had the only men s basketball program in the Big Sky Conference and among the state of Oregon s four Division I programs to be among the top 10 percent recognized by the NCAA. Head Coach Tyler Geving and Associate Head Coach Jeff Hironaka were both assistant coaches on the 2000-01 Seattle Pacific basketball staff. Special Advisor Barry Adams, a high school coaching legend in the state of Oregon, was elected to the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame on March 10, 2014. Adams spent more than four decades as a prep coach in the state. Assistant Coach Michael Plank spent a portion of his summer working with the Costa Rican National Team. Former Viking Ime Udoka played seven seasons in the NBA. He started 75 games for the Portland Trail Blazers in 2006-07. Udoka is now an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs, and won an NBA title with the team in 2013-14. Thomas played on two Big Sky Conference Championship/NCAA Tournament teams (2007-08, 2008-09) at PSU. He competed in Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014. Thomas signed a free agent contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2015. SEASON HIGHLIGHT REEL With a 105-60 win over Pacific Lutheran (11/13), Portland State had its first 100-point performance in a counting game since a 102-47 win over Walla Walla on Dec. 3, 2011. SO F Isaiah Pineiro posted 24 points and 14 rebounds in a 79-61 win at UT Rio Grande Valley (11/22). GR F 2015-16 Viking Basketball 5
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT PORTLAND STATE Portland State University, located in Portland, is the largest school in the state of Oregon with 28,241 students. PSU was founded in 1946 as Vanport College - a two-year institution. Athletically, Portland State began as a junior college in 1946-47, but competed in the Oregon Collegiate Conference (NAIA) beginning in 1948-49 to 1964-65. PSU became a four-year institution - Portland State College - in 1955. The Vikings won five OCC titles and competed in the NAIA playoffs twice. Portland State joined the NCAA in 1965-66. The Vikings reached the College Division playoffs in 1966-67. College Division was the forerunner to Division II. Portland State was given university status in 1969. During the 1970s, Portland State competed as a Division I program. The Vikings biggest star was Freeman Williams, who still ranks as the second all-time leading scorer in college basketball history behind Pete Maravich. Williams, a Division I All-American in 1978, scored 3,249 points in his career. The university dropped the men s basketball program in 1981 for budgetary reasons. It remained dormant until 1996-97 when basketball was reinstated and Portland State joined the Big Sky Conference. PSU has had seven winning seasons in its 13 years as a member, including four of the last five. Portland State won the Big Sky Conference regular season title in 2004-05 (19-9, 11-3), but lost in the Big Sky Tournament semifinals, missing a chance for the NCAA Tournament. In 2007-08, the Vikings won the Big Sky Conference regular season and tournament titles going 23-10, 14-2 in the Big Sky Conference. The resulting NCAA berth was the first at the Division I level for the Viking program. The Vikings lost to eventual national champion Kansas, but concluded the most successful season in school history. In 2008-09, PSU once again won 23 games - matching the school record - and reached a second straight NCAA Tournament after winning the Big Sky Conference Tournament for the second year in a row. With 78 wins from 2007-10, PSU had its most successful era in school history. Portland State has had 19 first team All-Big Sky Conference selections since 1996, including two Big Conference Players of the Year (Seamus Boxley, Jeremiah Dominguez), three Big Sky Defensive Players of the Year (Seamus Boxley - twice, Scott Morrison), and four Big Sky Newcomers of the Year (Jason Hartman, Ime Udoka, Dupree Lucas, Jeremiah Dominguez), one 6th Man of the Year (DaShaun Wiggins) and one Big Sky Outstanding Freshman (Seamus Boxley). Among Vikings in the NBA, Freeman Williams and Ime Udoka each spent seven playing seasons in the league. Udoka is currently an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs. Cameron Forte had a double-double as well with 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Vikings had their second 100-point game of the season with a 100-82 win over Multnomah (11/28). GR F Cameron Forte had 31 points on 15-26 shots while grabbing 10 rebounds. JR G Calaen Robinson scored 13 points and handed out 11 assists - the most by a Viking since Feb. 5, 2009 - in the win. JR G Zach Gengler scored a career-high 17 points in the Vikings 78-72 loss to Portland (12/2). SR C Collin Spickerman scored a career-high 15 points in the Vikings 74-64 loss at SIUE (12/12). JR G Calaen Robinson had a career-high 21 points (7-11 3-pt FG) in the Vikings 77-71 loss to CSUN (12/17). 2014-15 SEASON REVIEW The Portland State Vikings completed their 2014-15 season with a 15-14 record. It was the second straight winning season for PSU and third in four seasons. The Vikings were 9-9 and placed sixth in the Big Sky Conference, earning a bid to the post-season tournament. PSU lost a quarterfinal round game to Sacramento State. SEASON HIGHLIGHTS With a 15-14 record, Portland State has had three winning records in the last four seasons. After shooting.640 in the first half to take a 40-36 lead, the Vikings made only 10-39 shots in the second half (.282). The result was Portland State s fourth straight loss as it dropped to 3-6 on the season. CSUN shot.528 as a team, and overcame 19 turnovers to pull out the win. The Matadors improved to 3-7 overall. An 11-0 run CSUN midway through the first half got the Matadors an early lead at 23-10. Part of that rally was fueled by nine Viking turnovers by the 8:38 mark of the half. But Viking Calaen Robinson took over from there. The junior guard hit 6-6 three-pointers over the next six minutes, sparking a 24-4 PSU rally. That had the Vikings up 34-27 and they went into halftime ahead 40-36. The first half was littered with turnovers as the Vikings committed 12, and the Matadors had 10. PSU was able to score 15 points off turnovers, with all 15 coming in the last eight minutes. Both teams shot it well, though. The Vikings made 16-25 shots (.640) compared to 15-27 for the Matadors (.556). CSUN opened the second half on an 11-4 run to lead 47-44. The Vikings went cold, hitting just 2-15 shots in the opening eight minutes of the half. Robinson and his teammates didn t have the same touch in the second half in it proved costly. The Matadors extended their advantage to 65-53 with just over six minutes to go. PSU never got closer than four after that. Robinson finished with 21 points in the game, hitting 7-11 three-pointers. He also had four assists. Isaiah Pineiro came off the bench to score 17 points, grab five rebounds and make three steals. Cameron Forte scored 11 with eight boards, while Bryce White tallied 10 points and five assists. The Vikings ended up shooting.422 for the game and were out-rebounded 40-29. CSUN scored 20 points on offensive rebounds. Micheal Warren led four Matadors in double figures with 15 points. Tre Hale-Edmerson and Tavrion Dawson scored 14 points and Kendall Smith had 13.
