RESIDENTIAL COLLEGES: ST LUCIA ST LUCIA CAMPUS UQ St Lucia s on-campus accommodation consists of 10 residential colleges that are home to over 2,500 students from Australia and overseas. About the colleges Living on campus can assist you in making a smooth transition from high school to university. The colleges are located within easy walking distance of all university facilities and provide academic support, social, cultural and sporting activities and the opportunity to build networks and friendships that will last a lifetime. Most residential colleges provide full catering for undergraduate students and either full or some self-catering options for postgraduate students. Some colleges have separate wings for postgraduate students, while others combine undergraduate and postgraduate students. For further information on the availability of postgraduate accommodation, please contact the colleges directly. On-campus accommodation is in high demand and you should apply directly to the appropriate college well before application closing dates. It is strongly recommended that students interested in living on campus also investigate other off-campus housing options. What facilities and services do colleges provide? Every college is different, so before you apply you should check with the individual colleges about what services and facilities they offer. Most colleges provide: Individual rooms containing a single bed, a desk and chair, high-speed Internet and telephone access, and storage space for clothing and other belongings Shared bathroom facilities Meals served daily in a communal dining hall Laundries, computer laboratories, gymnasiums, libraries, music rooms and social common rooms Security guards or night porters to ensure the safety of all residents, and Limited parking (fees may apply). What are the benefits of living on campus? Aside from the convenience of having every university facility and service only minutes away, there are other great advantages of living at a residential college: Supportive staff and secure premises Academic tutorial programs and peer group support The opportunity to meet other students who are not in your academic program An active sporting, cultural and social life, and College scholarships, prizes and bursaries. What is college life really like? Life at a residential college aims to complement university life, not only academically, but also in the cultural, sporting and social fields. Students are encouraged to take part in college traditions, such as formal dinners, and may participate in networking events or community and fundraising activities including volunteer work. Sport is an important part of college life with cricket, hockey, rugby, soccer, swimming, tennis, athletics, cross country, volleyball, basketball, touch football, rowing, squash and netball all forming part of the Inter-College Competition (ICC). Inter-college rivalry also extends to the cultural field where competitions such as Choralfest, Dancefest, Bandfest, public speaking, one act plays and debating are held throughout the year. Students enjoy a wide range of organised social activities including annual balls, jazz nights, exchange dinners, trivia nights and boat cruises, all aimed at promoting student interaction within and between colleges. College fees and costs The cost of living on campus varies between colleges and ranges from $10,000 to $17,000 per year. College fees are influenced by several factors, including the number of weeks of residence (usually a 33-36 week academic period), type of room (standard or ensuite) and chosen catering option (full, partial or self catering). Other mandatory expenses such as security deposits and student club fees are additional. Students should contact the colleges directly or consult the UQ Accommodation Services website for details. There is usually a large range of properties available from basic and inexpensive student houses, to high-rise riverfront penthouse apartments. Students can choose the price and location of accommodation best suited to their needs. Accommodation Services strongly advise that students do not book this type of accommodation prior to arrival or without inspection. King s College King s College, founded in 1912, provides a safe, comfortable and supportive environment conducive to the pursuit of academic success, personal development and community service. King s boasts a range of outstanding facilities including tutorial/study rooms, a well-equipped gym (including free weekly consultations with a qualified Physiotherapist), swimming pool, rowing shed and pontoon, 24-hour computer room, barbecue facilities, beach volleyball court, practice basketball court, junior common room with billiard table, table tennis table and projector with cable television, night porter for the security of residents, and extensive well-lit car parks. The Old Collegians Learning Centre provides programs that support both the academic and pastoral development of young men with over 50 tutorials running in any given week. Providers meet criteria in regards to offering accommodation that is appropriate for students, conveniently located and compliant with all relevant state legislation. Living in a unit or apartment complex combines the advantages of residing in a student community with the freedom of self-catered housing. A variety of studio and single bedroom apartments are available for individual students as well as two to three bedroom units for groups of friends. Some unit complexes include swimming pools, gymnasiums and communal recreational areas while others provide more basic facilities suitable for students with smaller budgets. St Leo s College St Leo s College provides for individual living within a Catholic academic community welcoming residents of all faiths. With a tradition of academic success and a strong tutorial program, complemented by a broad sports and cultural inter-college competition, St Leo s encourages its residents to assist the disadvantaged in our society. COLLEGE APPLICATIONS Things to consider when choosing a college: Make sure you have sufficient funds to cover college fees, which are usually payable per semester, or as specified by the college Would you prefer to live with students of the same sex or in a coeducational college? Would you prefer to live at a college with a particular religious affiliation? Do you require any special facilities such as a gym? Take advantage of opportunities to tour the colleges so you can see which one is right for you. Tours are available throughout the year and can be organised through the administration staff at each of the colleges or on UQ Open Day. Making an application Complete an application form Available directly from colleges or via the UQ Accommodation Services website www.accommodation.uq.edu.au Include details of recent achievements and participation in school-based and extra-curricular activities and events Obtain suitable references from people able to vouch for your suitability to the college and your overall character. Submit your application and non-refundable application fee to your preferred college All colleges are privately run and are not operated by The University of Queensland Send your application and all related correspondence directly to your preferred college Apply to only one UQ residential college. If you are not accepted into the college of your choice, you may request that your application be forwarded to another college that still has vacancies. Don t miss the application deadline Closing dates for applications vary between the colleges but most coincide with the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) application closing date in late September (some colleges may accept late applications) Notification of a college offer usually occurs once students have received an offer of a university place in January (some colleges offer early provisional places) Students who intend to defer their university studies after Year 12 and who wish to live on campus upon their return should contact their college of choice to discuss preferred application procedures. The interview process An important part of the selection process for colleges is an interview with a senior member of the college staff. Some colleges visit regional schools throughout the year to meet with prospective students and conduct interviews. Under special circumstances, where distance prevents a face-toface interview, a phone interview may be arranged. Applicants will either be requested to contact or be contacted by their chosen college to organise a suitable time to be interviewed. Associate members program The Associate Members Program delivers some key aspects of the College experience for first year students of The University of Queensland, who are not living at a College, but are interested in the academic, networking, mentoring and social aspects of College life. Gatton CAMPUS Gatton is a beautiful and productive part of South East Queensland, encompassing some of the richest farming land in Australia. Living in Gatton Living and studying at UQ Gatton offers a number of advantages for students including a relaxed and friendly lifestyle, affordable living and a range of social and sporting opportunities. The towns of Gatton, Forest Hill and Laidley all offer affordable rental accommodation options. They surround the Gatton campus, which is situated 90 kilometres from UQ St Lucia. On-campus student houses Postgraduate and international students may choose to apply to stay in one of the self-contained on-campus houses managed by UQ Accommodation Services. Students can choose to: Rent a room in a fully-furnished share house that accommodates up to four people. Each student is allocated their own room and shares a bathroom, kitchen and lounge room facilities, or Rent an entire house for themselves and their families. Houses can be rented furnished or unfurnished subject to availability. Students living on campus at Gatton also have the option of purchasing meal packages. Halls of Residence The Halls of Residence offer on-campus accommodation for up to 406 students studying at UQ Gatton. Living in the Halls of Residence is highly recommended for first year students wishing to make the transition to university in a supportive environment with many opportunities for personal growth. The Halls provide every student with a private bedroom, 21 meals per week, free laundries, social activities, academic assistance, Internet access and common rooms for relaxation and entertainment. IPSWICH CAMPUS UQ Ipswich offers students a uniquely personalised learning environment, combining a tradition of quality education with a dynamic campus. Living in Ipswich Located only 45 minutes drive from Brisbane s CBD, UQ Ipswich is readily accessible by public transport from the western suburbs. Ipswich city boasts modern infrastructure, cafés, cultural activities, affordable accommodation and a pleasant climate with a relaxed yet progressive lifestyle. Students studying at UQ Ipswich can live in student accommodation close to campus or rental houses or units in surrounding suburbs. On-campus residential college accommodation is not available however in some instances, students studying at UQ Ipswich may opt to live at one of St Lucia s residential colleges and take advantage of the intercampus bus service. One features a complex of five-bedroom, fully furnished, self catering units where students rent a single bedroom and share facilities with four other flatmates. The other has single bedrooms with shared dining and recreational facilities. A third independent provider offers students self catering accommodation in an apartment complex located in central Ipswich, still within easy walking distance of campus.
