Effective Tools One key factor that define the greatest leaders: HIGH ENERGY Source: Prof.Örjan Sövell University of Stockholm CEO Anders Källström,West Sweeden Chamber of Commerce

Coaching skills will help your company:. Ability to create strong clusters. Meet your clients new needs and demands. Keep your energy while doing it! Coach for attitude and train for skills

Aim for this presentation 1. Additional understanding of coaching 2. One relevant experience of coaching 3. Example of an ongoing business coaching project

Exercise 1. Think about a situation in your life where you made a new choice due to an conversation with a person that offered input, resistance, or questions that lead to new perspective. 2. What was the situation (keep it short)? 3. How did you benefit from this (new choice)?

What is coaching? A "Coach" will coach you to peak success in your life, your career and your business. A coach will help you to increase your productivity and your profitability.

What is coaching? Coaching is; Profession Leadership tool Conversation form Learning method

Coaching Research A qualitative research on the effect of leadership coaching, concluded that there were 3 key factors that were crucial for the result 1. The client motivated, willing and commited to the process 2. The coach experienced, personal quality that builds trust, rapport skills, knowledge about relevant tools, models, processes and resources that will be of benefit to the client 3. The organization have a culture that support development and learning, willingness to finance ongoing programs (ICF, 2005 et al. Bush, 2004).

Coaching Research Very few emperic studies of coaching from 1955 to 1990 (0-2 in a 5 years period) From 2001-2006 - 51 studies Mainly Casus studies ( Evidence Based Coaching Stober & Grant, 2006) Coaching is considered a key tool for leader development (Cairo & Dotlich, 1999; Crane, 2001; Goldsmith, Lyons & Freas, 2000; Kilburg, 2000) Mentioned coaching as a important and usefull method for both performance - and cultural development (Crane, 2001; Goldsmith, et al. 2000; Guthrie, 1999; Hudson, 1999; Kilburg, 2000; Sperry, 1993; Witherspoon & White, 1998) Despite the growing interest for coaching as a method there is still very little empiric research about the effect from coaching

A complex process to study Another study repports about good results from coaching. Especially 3 skills were improved 1. The ability to keep focus 2. Professional related knowledge 3. Ability to acheive goals One group of leaders were given coaching after a leadership program, the other group were left alone, The group that got coaching, were more focused on the areas were they wanted to change behaviour. New knowledge were more connected to their role as a leader, they showed a higher goal acheivement level than the control group (ICF, 2005, et al. Hernez-Broome)

A final research which refer to very positive economical effects from business coaching has been done bymanchester Inc[1]. 100 topp level executives from Fortune 1000- businesses in Atlanta USA. The research showed a ROI on the coaching cost on approximately 600 %. In addituon the results showed a positive development on the following environment variables: relationship skills, jobb satisfaction, increased team spirit and reduction of conflicts. IBM have found that those leaders with the best coaching skills also aceive better economical results.(the Time Magazine, 25. september 2000). [1] Tapping the Strategic Potential of Executive Coaching. (http://www.right.com/global/consult/ldrdev/ldrcoach.htm

What define a Coaching culture? Trust between the leader and co-worker Recognize and use diverse talents and skills Willingness to act and to see the consequences Courage and ability to confront different realities Ability to empower each other and make each other better (performance development)

We are Human beings You cannot lead intelligent people through directives, rules and regulations. You can only coach them through their values.

Basic human need: To feel APPRECIATED

Exercise 3 levels of appreciative feedback: Level 1: That s great - you did a good job! Level 2: How did you do that? Level 3: What does this accomplishment tell you about yourself and your qualities and abilities? Normally we stop at level one. Using level 2 and 3 creates a much stronger impact and builds a deeper trust in the relationship.
