The school believes that one of the best ways for children to learn is through practical activities and the school grounds are full of artefacts such as a totem pole, Mesolithic hut and an iron age round house. The school works closely with The Moulsecoomb Forest Garden and Wildlife Project, which has a collection of allotments which have been converted into an environmental project for the benefit of the local community. The Forest Garden and Wildlife Project began in 1994 and is now a magical place hidden away behind the railway station. WORK: International volunteers will be involved with improving the school grounds, helping out in the classrooms with the children and spending two days a week helping with environmental tasks at the local allotments with the local community. Tasks may include weeding, clearing, watering the vegetables and fruit growing, looking after the bees and maintaining the new eco-build as well as talking to visitors about the work that goes on in the local area to enable groups and individuals to engage with the natural environment. ACCOMMODATION & FOOD: The accommodation is basic but adequate; volunteers will sleep on the floor in the community room at the school. There are showers and cooking facilities at the school. Please bring a sleeping bag and roll mat. The community room is used at 8am for breakfast club so volunteers must be prepared to tidy their things away in the morning and have breakfast with the children. Since it is always nice to try new and different dishes, volunteers are encouraged to bring along their favourite recipes from home! Although the work is not always strenuous you will need to be reasonably fit and active to come on a working visit. The centre will also need help with painting and decorating around the centre. This project allows volunteers to gain an insight and experience of living and working in a modern day Buddhist community, helping to gain a peaceful and relaxed mind and meeting others with shared perspectives and ideas. All meals are vegetarian and volunteers are requested not to bring meat onto the premises. Smoking and alcohol are not permitted at the centre.
