Her time of 16:25 was just 15 seconds behind the reigning state champion, Madisen Lavin of Vermillion. The Watchdogs faced warm and breezy conditions at Pasley Park, a course run primarily around a softball field complex in southeastern Sioux Falls. The Watchdog girls finished behind the Madison Bulldogs, the top team in Class A at the midway
point of the season. Madison had 14 points, Beresford finished with 38, and Canton was third with 45 points. Savey ran with the lead group for much of the race and held onto her top five finish with a big surge over the last mile of the race. Sophomore Ashlynn Atwood had another strong race for her team as she came across the line in 16:52, which was good enough for 8 th place. Eight grader Grace Quartier had the best race of her young career as she slowly picked off runners to grab the 14 th spot in 17:48. Junior Julia Mochel rounded out the team score with a 15 th place finish in 17:52 on the very flat course. Caitlin Worth battled some hamstring soreness but still ran a solid race just missing a medal as she finished 21 st. Hannah Ebert was the final runner for the girls varsity team placing 28 th in the field of 45 runners. Alec Atwood, just an 8 th grader, had another outstanding performance as he raced to a 10 th place finish in the boys varsity division with an impressive time of 18:18. Atwood helped guide the boys to 4 th place in the team standings behind West Central, Western Christian (Iowa), and Sioux Falls Christian. Sophomore Tim Peterson was the number two runner for the Watchdogs finishing one spot outside of the medals in 21 st in 19:05. Peterson was competing in just his 3 rd varsity race of his career. Senior Nick O Connell led a pack of Watchdogs to the finish chute as he placed 25 th in 19:19. Jake Limmer was 26 th in 19:28 and Cole Homandberg was 28 th in 19:34 on the 5K course. Dakota Galt was the final varsity runner for the boys finishing 35 th in the race featuring 53 varsity runners. The JV girls team won the team title in dramatic fashion as the winner had to be determined by the pusher. In cross- country, the top four finishers count for team points. If there is a tie between two teams, the tiebreaker is determined by the finish of each team s 5 th runner. Leading the girls to victory was 7 th grader Katie Knutson with an exciting 2 nd place finish in 18:24. She gave herself a shot to win the race as she passed several runners in the last 1000 meters. Knutson battled with a Western Christian runner down the homestretch and nearly came away with the gold medal. Knutson s classmate Sabrina Swee finished the 4K course in 8 th place with a time of 19:13. Sophomore Kendra Schaap was the third runner across the line in 19:19 for 12 th place and 8 th grader Katie Mochel rounded out the team score with her 15 th place finish in 19:21.
The Watchdogs tied Madison with 37 points but Lexy Johnsen was the 5 th runner for the Watchdogs in 17 th place. She beat the Bulldog s 5 th runner by six positions. Also medaling for the JV girls were Faith Weiland (18 th place) and Kylie Dressen (19 th place.) The JV boy s race was the biggest of the day with 102 runners crowded onto the tight course. The team showed their depth and finished a strong 3 rd place as a team. Seventh grade newcomer Kellyn March had his fourth 6 th place finish of the season as he crossed the line with a time of 15:43. Sophomore Riley Twedt had another top- ten finish as he ended up in 8 th place with a time of 16:02. Eighth grade runner Noah Hinrchs earned another medal in 18 th place with a time of 16:35, and rounding out the scoring for the JV squad was Trent Lyle in 25 th place. The boys finished with 50 points. Winning the JV boys team title was West Central with 11 points, and coming in second with 32 points was SF Christian. The Watchdogs are back in action this Friday, September 26 as they take on the teams from Union county (Alcester- Hudson, Dakota Valley, and Elk Point- Jefferson) in the Battle of the Ol Canteen. The race will be held at the Elk Point golf course. All runners will compete in the varsity division with the girl s race starting at 4:15 P.M.
