A region opens to new Energy With its natural maritime focus, the Pays de la Loire Region is led by a strong political will and is supported by unique infrastructure to develop large scale Marine Renewable Energy. Nantes Saint-Nazaire Port Authority, No.1 port on the Atlantic seaboard. 1,400 MW of offshore wind energy projects split into 2 zones. Dedicated land available. 130 million invested by the Regional Council by 2020. A powerful multi-sector industrial base Boosted by the high number of qualified industry jobs, the Pays de la Loire Region has major industrial capacity and a deep naval and aeronautical base. Pays de la Loire, 4th industrial region in France. 4 leading companies: Alstom, DCNS, STX and Rollix. Historical skills in the naval industry and maritime engineering. Top flight human The Region is home to prestigious engineering schools and training centres that are eminently qualified to support the development of Marine Renewable Energy, from design to operation. Ecole Centrale de Nantes: France s leading engineering school for MRE, networked with several prestigious engineering schools: Ecole des Mines, ICAM, Polytech, ENSAM, ISTIA. 1 training centre on wind turbine maintenance offshore and on land, certified by the BZEE. 77 institutes adapted to the requirements of the value chain with a total of over 6,000 pupils, students and apprentices. Project to create a centre of excellence in training in MRE sector. Excellence R&D As an innovative region, Pays de la Loire is home to several R&D centres covering all of the technologies inherent in Marine Renewable Energy. The IRT Jules Verne Technological Research Institute, a centre of excellence devoted to advanced technology in the production of composites, metals and hybrid structures; it is supported by 6 platforms dedicated to R&D, among them: o Technocampus Ocean, the flagship platform oriented around naval construction and MRE, o Side wharfing platform: testing centre for full-size prototypes, o Industrial Virtual Reality Centre. France Energies Marines (FEM), the Centre of Excellence for Low Carbon Energy (IEED), bringing together over 50 partners to collaborate on the industrialisation of a range of MRE technologies (offshore wind, marine current, wave and ocean thermal energies). EMC2 Competitiveness Cluster, which leads and frames collaborative R&D on RME in the Pays de la Loire region. 20 research teams working on the Marine Renewable Energy issue. 2 Industries and services in Pays de la Loire region 2.1 Study, research and training Thanks to its industrial fabric and coastline, our region is home to countless engineering firms and research laboratories whose skills can be used to develop renewable marine energies. From overall management of offshore wind farms to the development of wave power prototypes, our regional engineering firms can assist all RME projects from their design right through to their implementation from overall project management to the most in-depth expert appraisals. Environmental surveys prior to the construction of infrastructure and installation of farms can be carried out locally by companies with renowned expertise and familiar with the estuary and Atlantic environment. The particularly dense university network, connected to the industrial environment, offers up all sorts of R&D opportunities tied in with renewable marine energies, including complex assemblies, materials in the marine environment and acoustics. Adapted test platforms and skills and experience are available. Adequate training programs are given for a qualified and trained workforce.
