China Partners and Programs The CEPH Centre has established a fruitful working relationship with many academic, Chinese government and nongovernment institutions in the areas of public health leadership and health promotion capacity building for disease control and prevention, gender and women s health, environmental health and healthy settings, occupational health and botanical medicine for population health. Key partners come from the national, provincial and municipal levels of Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Beijing, shanghai, Hangzhou, etc), Guangdong Provincial Health Bureau, Women s Research Institute of the All-China Women s Federation, and Universities such as Peking University, Sun Yat-sen University, The Peking Union Medical University, and Zhejiang University. Public health research, degree courses, professional development and leadership capacity building: Capacity building (PDF public health capacity building). In public health capacity building CEPH has a strong and active working relationship with China CDC. A pilot Master of Sciences in Public Health (MScPH) program, from 2004 to 2005 produced 33 graduates from China CDC, 15 with Graduate Certificates, and 18 with Master degrees. From 2007-08, through winning two rounds of AusAID Australian Leadership Awards, CEPH provided China CDC a year-long public health leadership program to 32 practitioners with leadership potential nominated nationwide from China. Currently there is a full range of degree and non-degree public health programs on offer, including postdoctoral, PHD, Master of Sciences in Public Health, Master of Environment and Health Leadership and Management, intensive professional development courses and professional short courses. Short courses cover a wide range areas such as health promotion planning and evaluation, healthy settings development (healthy cities, workplaces, hospitals, schools, communities), food safety, environmental health, occupational health, reproductive health promotion, public health research design. Joint Master of Sciences in Public Health degree course partners are China CDC, Schools of Public Health of Peking University and Sun Yat-sen University. China Partners and Programs Public health research CEPH is working closely with returned graduates to make contributions to environment and population health through research to analyse and develop strategies to address serious public health challenges such as immunization for floating populations, management of drug-resistant TB, iodine deficiency among children, occupational injuries and illnesses in factories, and prevention of HIVAIDS sharp injuries by health care workers, mother-to child HIVAIDs prevention, health impact assessment, etc. Current focus and research consortium development are on the following areas: Migrant children s health development (PDF on migrant children research) Risk communication and decision-making in public health (PDF on risk communication research) Healthy and active ageing (PDF on gender and health development) Occupational health and safety (PDF on occupational health) Climate change and health (in development phase) Risk Communication Project Members Occupational Health Project Members MOU on migrant children at Peking U

Environmental Health & Development Advising Governments on the planning and development of healthy and sustainable cities: Integrating Environment, Health & Socio-economic development into urban planning and management. China program areas of focus: Environmental Health and Healthy Settings The Centre s Director, Prof Cordia Chu and Deputy Director Dr Peter Davey have a long history of working with Shanghai on healthy settings development including healthy cities, workplaces and schools. As early as 1993-1996 Prof Chu became a WHO consultant for the Shanghai Health Education Institute on the WHO sponsored Healthy Urban China Project which included healthy cities, health-promoting workplaces and schools projects. In partnership with Shanghai Municipal Health Promotion Committee, CEPH members have been involved in the facilitation of healthy cities capacity building and assisted with the 2005 Shanghai International Conferences on Healthy Cities.

Enhancing Occupational Health and Safety Training in China: An Australia-China Partnership The project on enhancing occupational heath and safety training in China has been awarded a grant from the Australia-China Foundation. The long-term vision for the project is to develop a sustainable and meaningful partnership to promote workplace health and safety through capacity building, collaborative research, and the sharing of relevant expertise and information. The immediate aim is to strengthen OHS training capacity in the Guangdong health workforce to enable them to deal with pressing occupational health challenges. Thus, while the MOU covers a range of OHS activities, the initial focus is on identifying training needs and the development of useful supportive material, especially the translation and adaptation of Principles of Occupational Signing the MOU on May 18, 2008 in Guangzhou are Prof Huang Hanlin from Guangdong Prevention and Treatment Center for Occupational Diseases, Prof Ian Health and Hygiene. Mr Huang Fei (middle back row), the Deputy Director-General of the Guangdong Health Bureau was the witness to the MOU. The Australian Book on Principles of Occupational Health and Hygiene The Australian text Principles of Occupational Health and Hygiene is recognised by the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (AIOH) and offers a systematic and comprehensive overview of occupational health hazards and hazardous environments applicable to a range of commonly encountered industrial and organisational settings. The book s authors, leading industry professionals and educators, explain how to use occupational hygiene processes to identify key workplace hazards including chemical agents such as dusts, metals and gases, physical agents such as noise, radiation, temperature extremes, and microbiological agents. They also outline the procedures needed to assess the risk from such exposures and to control and manage those risks effectively. Chapters are illustrated with useful tables, diagrams, flowcharts and pictures, reflecting the combination of basic theory, factual health knowledge and the intensely practical nature of the interventions needed to manage hygiene hazards in the workplace. This textbook, School, Centre or Element Name rich in information and useful professional practices, has gained international recognition and is used in many postgraduate health and safety courses as an introduction for training professional hygienists. 9

Gender and Population Health Research Focus (See Gender and population program): Gender, Sexual & Reproductive Health Policy The example of this work is a four stage reproductive health project with the All- China Women s federation funded by the Ford foundation which has resulted in 17 provincial projects and thousands of women in disadvantaged areas. The project also produced a set of training material, a book and a draft policy paper. (see PDF) HIVAIDS local decision making and risk communication Current projects include: Liew & Chu (2006-08) Risk and Heterogeneity: AIDS and SARS Policymaking in China, an ARC funded project; An international research consortium on risk communication and public health decision-making in emergencies with 20 members including 3 CEPH staff and 17 CEPH graduates who are also researchers at China s national or provincial level CDCs. The 17 sub-projects in various stages of developing risk communication strategies include disaster management, infectious disease outbreaks, mother to child HIVAID transmission, food safety, environmental pollution and occupational safety incidents.
