2 Professor Graham de Vahl Davis, President Assembly for International Heat Transfer Conferences April 15, 2010 Dear President de Vahl Davis: As the current President of the Chinese Heat and Mass Transfer Society, I take great pleasure in inviting the 16th International Heat Transfer Conference (IHTC16) to hold their 2018 meeting in Beijing at the new, state-of-the-art China National Convention Center in the Olympic Village that was built for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. The conference center has excellent facilities to accommodate the expected 1500 or more presentations in The conference site is centrally located in Beijing with excellent transportation connections, including a direct connection to the subway system. The Chinese Heat and Mass Transfer Society has extensive experience hosting large annual heat and mass transfer meetings. Our meetings have more than 600 papers each year with more than 800 attendees. These conferences always include a series of keynote lectures by renowned experts from China as well as guests invited from outside of China. We have also held combined meetings with the Chinese Combustion Society with over 1000 presentations. In addition, the ASME International Conference on Integration and Commercialization of Micro and Nanosystems was held in southern China in The ASME 2nd Micro/Nanoscale Heat and Mass Transfer International Conference under the leadership of Prof. Ping Cheng was held last year in Shanghai with over 350 attendees from 18 countries and was considered one of the most successful ASME international conferences. The Chinese delegation will be presenting more than 150 excellent papers at the forthcoming 14th IHTC in Washington, and more papers will be presented by the Chinese delegation at Kyoto in I am quite certain that significantly more papers from China will be submitted at the 16th IHTC, which will make this a very successful conference. We have assembled an excellent organizing committee to make arrangements for the conference and an executive committee to run the daily operations of the conference with everyone having experience organizing meetings and conferences. The advisory committee, consisting of esteemed professors and leaders in the Chinese heat and mass transfer community, will provide advice from their many years of experience.

INTRODUCTION The Chinese Heat and Mass Transfer Society invites the 16th International Heat Transfer Conference (IHTC16) to be held in Beijing in Beijing is both a tribute to China's proud history and a gateway to China's future. As the capital of Liao, Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, Beijing has long been the political and cultural center of China and is now one of the most important business, political and scientific centers in the world. Alongside 7300 cultural and historic sites and more than 200 scenic spots, Beijing boasts an impressive modern skyline, an effective transportation network with the Beijing Capital International Airport being China's largest and most advanced airport. 1

6 In 2008, Beijing hosted the very successful Olympic Games with a stunning display of pageantry showcasing China s history and world-class facilities and Shanghai is currently hosting the magnificent 2010 World Expo. The themes of the 2008 Beijing Olympic were the Green Olympics, High-Tech Olympics and People's Olympics" with state-of-the-art environmentally friendly technologies widely applied in the various facilities to reduce their environmental impact. For example, all the key buildings were designed with rainwater collector and auto-recycling systems. The spacious steel frame structures, such as the Bird Nest Stadium, were designed for good air ventilation. The nano-material referred to as ETFE was used to construct the walls of the Water Cube natatorium that self-clean during rainstorms and allow more light and heat penetration than traditional glass, resulting in a 30% reduction in energy costs. The Chinese National Convention Center, the proposed conference site for the 16th IHTC, boasts an extensive natural air conditioning system that reduces energy use by over 300 kw. All of the buildings also include waste heat recycling systems that recover low-grade heat from waste water which is then upgraded by high-efficiency heat pump systems for use in the building environmental systems. All of these systems significantly reduce the energy use in these buildings. Bird Nest Water Cube 2

7 II. CONFERENCE A. ORGANIZATION The Heat and Mass Transfer Society of China (HMTSC), established in 1984, has been a powerful driving force for not only national but also international activities related to heat and mass transfer research and development. The society has a nationwide interactive network among universities, national research institutions and industry. Since the l st National Heat and Mass Transfer Symposium of China held in 1984, HMTSC has sponsored 15 very successful Annual National Heat and Mass Transfer Symposia of China. The 15th Symposium in Qingdao in 2009 had over 600 papers presented with nearly 800 attendees. In addition, the Combustion Division of the Chinese Society of Engineering Thermophysics and the Society of Chemical Engineers have also held many heat and mass transfer related conferences in cooperation with the HMTSC. The Science Council of China has committed their full support for IHTC16. On behalf of these societies, we cordially invite IHTC16 to be held in Beijing. The following three committees have been assembled to do preparation work for IHTC16: -Executive committee to provide day to day organization of the conference -Organizing committee to plan for the technical program of the conference -Advisory committee consisting of senior members to advise the Executive and Organizing Committees on running the conference The Executive, Organizing and Advisory committees, all of which are composed of experienced, successful leaders in the field of heat transfer, will work closely together to organize a successful conference. BACKGROUND TO IHTC16 International heat transfer research activities have been effectively promoted by: - International Heat Transfer Conference, IHTC, since 1951, - International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, IJHMT, since 1960, - International Centre for Heat and Mass Transfer, ICHMT, since Many outstanding advances in heat transfer research are due to the worldwide efforts of these organizations to build mutually beneficial relationships among the entire heat transfer community and the resulting extensive mutual cooperation among researchers. Some of the pioneering leaders in the heat transfer field in China have been Professor B. X. Wang of and Professor S. Y. Ko of the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, CAS, who became editors of the International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer starting in 1983, Professor Z. Y. Guo of as one of the founding editors of Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science in 1988 and Nanoscale and Microscale Thermophysical Engineering in 1997, Professor Ping Cheng of Shanghai Jiao Tong University who is an executive committee member of the International Centre for Heat and Mass Transfer and an editor of the International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, Professor W. Q. Tao of Xi an Jiaotong University who is an associate editor of the International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer and of the ASME Journal of Heat Transfer, and Prof. X. J. Chen of Xi'an Jiaotong University who is a member of the editorial advisory board of the International Journal of Multiphase Flow. In addition, Prof. X. Zhang is an editor of Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science, Prof. R. Z. Wang is an associate editor of Energy-the international journal and Solar Energy and X. G. Liang is an editor of Nanoscale and Microscale Thermophysical Engineering and an associate editor of the International Journal of Thermal Sciences. 6

11 In addition to these leaders in the heat transfer field in China, many other Chinese authors are currently making significant contributions to advancing the state-of-the-art in the heat transfer field. As shown in the following table, in the last 5 years, Chinese authors have published more than 10% of the articles in the 17 leading international heat transfer journals, the second largest contribution behind the U.S. In addition, the second table shows how the number of Chinese authored journal papers published in these 17 leading journals has very rapidly increased in the last 5 years. These increases are expected to continue as China more aggressively supports all areas of scientific research. 12 The International Heat Transfer Conferences have an illustrious history of meetings in a very wide variety of settings representative of the international membership of the heat transfer community as shown in Table 1. Locations of Past International Heat Transfer Conferences China would be greatly honored to host IHTC16 in Because of the drastic increase in energy research funding from the Chinese Government, the heat transfer community in China has grown very rapidly in recent years with a large number of very excellent papers published every year in a wide variety of journals and at many international conferences. Many talented Chinese heat transfer experts are eager to make IHTC 16 a great success. The organizing committee expects at least 1,500 quality papers to be presented at the 16 th IHTC with keynote lectures by leading experts from all over the world. 8

13 IV. CONCLUSIONS Beijing has a 3000 year long history and has been the capital of China for 857 years. Since the People s Republic of China was founded in 1949, China has developed very rapidly while keeping its rich history. China is a rapidly developing country as the economy booms. The very successful 2008 Summer Olympic Games showcased Beijing and all of China to the world. The heat transfer profession in China has also developed very rapidly since Many visionary leaders have promoted the growth of heat transfer expertise in China with China now having a large number of renowned heat transfer experts who are on the leading edges of many research fields as China's research and industry rapidly develop. Chinese heat transfer scholars are already significantly influencing heat transfer research worldwide with a rapidly increasing number of high quality papers published each year and increasing participation in international conferences, many of which have been hosted in China. The 16 th International Heat Transfer Conference in 2018 will have a significant impact on the growth of the international heat transfer research community in the 21 st Century. Many new, exciting technologies will be showcased with many strategic advances in existing technologies that will transform how we use and conserve energy. The 16 th IHTC in Beijing will allow attendees from all over the world to interact in a very synergistic conference environment that will facilitate many new breakthroughs while they enjoy the history, culture and food of Beijing.
