INTRODUCTION Throughout its five previous editions, the Spanish Show Caves Congress has become a landmark of underground tourism. CUEVATUR is the meeting point to highlight recent work, studies or research carried out on Spanish caves, as well as internationally, particularly relating to Latin America and Europe. Since its first edition, back in 2005, CUEVATUR has convened a large number of scientists and researchers in the world of geology, archeology, biology, engineering and tourism, whose nearly 200 papers presented, gathered in the Minutes of the Congress different editions, make up an essential collection for scholars of the underground world. CUEVATUR has represented the place to exchange the experiences and knowledge of show cave managers, as well as a point of reference for those responsible for the opening of new show caves, as it gathers major experts on show caves and mines. PLACE AND DATES Congress will take place in Nerja (Malaga), on September 29, 30 and October 1, 2016; and sessions will be held in the Villa de Nerja Cultural Center (Centro Cultural Villa de Nerja), a t Granada Street, 45; and at the Nerja Museum (Museo de Nerja), Plaza de España, nº4, both located at 29780 Nerja, Malaga (admon@museodenerja.es.) Phone: 952527224) CONGRESS SITE: NERJA Nerja is the easternmost town in the Spanish Costa del Sol, which began its tourism development in 1959, with the discovery of the Nerja Cave, one of the most visited natural monuments in Spain, now surpassing half million tourists a year. In 1980, Nerja was the filming scene of the TV series Verano Azul, which has become the most sold TV series in the history of TVE and continues to break audience records to date, which attracts thousands of tourists every year looking to admire the landscapes of the TV series. The main unknown feature of Nerja is its rich natural environment, with almost 80% of its territory being a protected area. North of town is the Sierras de Tejeda y Almijara Natural Park; east, the Natural Area of the Maro-Cerro Gordo cliffs, featuring virgin beaches and diving activities. Among mountains, cliffs, gorges and hills of great beauty, numerous marked trails and recreation areas offer magnificent views and leisure scenarios.
Attractions Beaches and Cliffs Nerja has a coastline of over 14 km, including beaches and cliffs of special environmental value, featuring wheelchair-accessible beaches. Nerja Cave The Nerja Cave is located near the village of Maro. Given its distribution (two distinct areas: one first sector opened to the public, which includes the southernmost third of the Cave; and the remaining two thirds consisting of the High and New Galleries, these last restricted access sectors), its dimensions (nearly 5 km of substantially horizontallydeveloped galleries known occupying more than 350,000 cubic meters), its many and varied speleothems (stalactites, stalagmites, columns, tracks), cave paintings, archaeological sites and strata (dating from 25,000-3,600 years), it is considered a first-order geological element of the Andalusian karst heritage. It was declared Historic- Artistic Monument in 1961; subsequently, Cultural Interest Asset in 1985; and, in November 2005, Cultural Interest Asset under the category of Archaeological Zone. Inside, paintings of seals have been found, which might be the first piece of rock art known in the history of mankind aged 42,000 years. The Nerja Cave stands out since its discovery due to continuous efforts given to its research. In 1999, the Nerja Cave Research Institute (Instituto de Investigación Cueva de Nerja, IICN) was founded with the purpose of meeting the objectives set out in the statutes of the Nerja Cave Foundation relating to research, preservation and dissemination of the Natural and Cultural Heritage of Nerja Cave and its surroundings. This is a nonprofit research institute, financed with funds provided by the Nerja Cave Foundation. Since 1959, the institute has conducted over seventy research projects, with numerous technical and scientific publications that have arisen within the framework of the Nerja Cave. Various symposia and conferences held in its facilities and under its sponsorship are also worth mentioning.
