3 For the Hotel Institution for Technology (ITH), innovation, knowledge, technology and talent are valuable assets that will enhance Spanish tourism industry competitiveness; making it able to create value for customers, to offer better products and experiences, and to optimize and integrate operational management sustainability into business strategy. The work of ITH is aligned with the Spanish Government s Plan del Turismo Español Horizonte 2020, managed by the Secretary of State for Tourism, and aimed at helping Spain to regain its leadership position: according to World Economic Forum, between 2009 and 2011, Spain has gone from sixth to eighth position in tourism competitiveness ranking In the last decade, tourism has dropped its contribution to Spanish GDP, from 12% to 10%, and the sector, which competes in a global market, is subject to a world financial turmoil The Spanish hotel industry has made great efforts to innovate and adopt new technologies, but there is still a lot work to do. In addition, small and medium sized enterprises (SME), which dominate this sector (70%) are the most exposed both to changes in economic cycles and financial crises as well as to financial barriers to innovate Innovate: the mission of ITH
