2 Scope The first experimental evidence that an RNA virus population consisted of distributions of mutant genomes, termed quasispecies, was first published 30 years ago by Charles Weissmann, Esteban Domingo and colleagues (Domingo et al. Cell 1978; 13: ). This publication gave experimental support to the first theoretical treatment of a system that replicated with limited fidelity that was developed by Manfred Eigen (Eigen Naturwissenschaften 1971; 58: ) to understand self-organization and adaptability of early life forms in earth. High mutation rates and quasispecies dynamics of RNA viruses are intimately related to viral disease, adaptive potential of viruses and therapeutic antiviral strategies. Moreover, the quasispecies concept is being applied to other biological systems as tumors, in which a cellular mutant spectrum can be also detected. The meeting will start with a brief historical review of the most relevant findings but it will quickly move to present day questions regarding viral and theoretical quasispecies concepts and its more practical aspects concerning resistances to viral treatments for HIV and HCV and with the discussion of new strategies to treat these and other worldwide viral diseases.
