4 President Dwight Eisenhower Responds to Sputnik School curriculums changed to emphasize math and science Advanced Research Projects Agency created in 1958 Make the U.S. Dept. of Defense more high-level and technology based NASA was created The Space Race against the Soviets begins

5 Advanced Research Projects Agency 1969 Created a state-of-the-art, earlywarning network to guard against Soviet nuclear bomber attack. Named APRANET Released to the public in 1989 and renamed Internet.

6 So--Who created the Internet? U.S. Government Dept. of Defense 1 st called ARPANET

7 What is the Internet? Largest computer network in the world connecting millions of computers. In 2009, there were over 1.7 billion Internet users. This is over ¼ of the world s population. Wow!

14 How to Read a URL (Uniform Resource Locator) World Wide Web Hypertext Transfer Protocol the language computers use to talk to web servers Domain Name personal address of the website Domain Extension can tell you a lot about the owner of the site

15 Domain Extensions they tell a lot.com = commercial.gov = government.edu = educational.info = information *usually spam or for marketing.org = organization.net = network.biz = small business.tv=multimedia/entertainment.mil = military.co = company (in the United Kingdom).mobi = mobile.sch = schools outside of the U.S..k12 = U.S. schools.ac = academics not in the U.S. Country Extensions.uk = United Kingdom.ca = Canada.fr = France.us = United States.bz = Belize Also used when.biz is already taken

24 Cookies... Computer files containing personal information about a user. These cookies are automatically stored each time you fill out a form about yourself and then they are sent to a central computer anytime it requests them. DELETE cookies often! (Tools, Delete Browsing History)
