1 Lesson Title: Spanish Morphology Jacob Winters Spanish II (Grades 9-11) Time Required: 50 minutes Prior Knowledge Needed -Students should have a basic Spanish vocabulary (basic verbs, determiners, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, etc) Preparation/Materials Required -Chalk/Dry Erase Markers -Morpheme Cards in English -Homework will need to be written -Flyswatters (matamoscas) -Handout -Resources will need to be located State Standards -World Languages Compose cohesive written information using appropriate formats and more varied vocabulary and structures with increasing accuracy. -World Languages Use elements of word formation to expand vocabulary and derive meaning Lesson Objectives -Explain the concept of morphology and its importance -Identify Spanish counterparts to English morphemes -By the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify/separate the words in terms of morphemes, including the root, prefix, and suffixes -The students should also be able to properly complete a homework assignment and pass a quiz over the material Procedures 1. Anticipatory Set/Previous Learning: Review some Spanish words and their meanings by having the students define words that are on the board on their own. Discuss what they have learned in previous lesson. These words will be used later as examples. (5 minutes) 2. Explain the concept of Morphology using English-language examples (building blocks of words, why it s important, concept of lexicon/bank) (10 minutes) 3. Further explain concept by having the students come up, a few at a time, and hold a morpheme card and rearrange in order for the class to see. (5 minutes) 4. Have the students sit back down and have students list word roots. Instructor writes the roots on the board. (5 minutes) 5. Activity: Have the students form groups to form words with the morphology handout and the word roots on the board. Briefly review afterwards (5-10 minutes) 6. Extra time in case one part goes over. If time is available, student will play matamoscas: fly swatting at morphemes on the board competing against another student after the teacher provides the corresponding morpheme. (10 minutes) Closure Have the students reform their rows. Wrap by closing, transitioning, and foreshadowing into the following days lesson that will further delve into morphemes and practice also reexamine objectives. (5 minutes) Announcements Explain the homework: what it is and that it is due in 2 days. Announce quiz (assessment) date as the end of the week. (5 minutes)

2 Homework The homework is a simple review of what the students have learned in this lesson. The purpose is to provide students with a review of the concepts, as well as to further practice and memorize the concepts we learned. The assignment will be graded by points and will be due 2 days after the lesson (the additional day is for practice of the concepts). MORPHOLOGY HANDOUT
