2 The team of the Associazione Art. Cult. A Rocca and Eprojectconsult International department, in cooperation with Zespół Szkół nr 3 im. ks. prof. J. Tischnera w Wadowicach took the role of intermediary partner for group of people from Wadowice, Poland in the frame of Erasmus+ programme. During the project named Poznawanie standardów pracy w branży usługowejw różnych sferach życia w regionach śródziemnomorskich we hosted 16 selected participants. The internship were in the field of cooking and catering, thereby they gained experience in their field of studies and become acquainted with the traditional Italian and Sicilian techniques of gastronomy and service.

3 Duration, Dates, Participants The duration of the project was 4 weeks, from the 31 st of August to the 22 nd of September. Names of the participants: 1. Bienia Iwona 2. Chmura Karolina 3. 4 Preparation of the mobility project In order to make the cooperation between both organizations effective, guarantee the best quality project and to satisfy the participant s expectations and needs, we have designed the program of the project together. We have exchanged s in order to discuss the aims of the project, to develop the plan of activities and to clarify any doubts. Arrival of the participants The group of participants arrived on the 31 st of August at the airport of Palermo. The A Rocca organization provided the transfer from the airport to participant s accommodation in Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto town. On the same day of their arrival they had an informative welcome meeting, designed to give the participants useful information they require during their stay in Sicily. Firstly, they had the introduction to the program in general. The tutor informed the trainees about the organization and described the work activities, obligations and tasks they will be involved in during the project. Next, they were provided with the plan of the city and were acquainted with all the hospitalities of Barcellona P.G. and nearest cities.

5 The next informative session was dedicated to the cultural aspects of their life in Sicily: the work style in Italy, rules to follow, behaviour and other cultural information was given to the participants. The Help me card with useful numbers and phrases in Italian as well as a leaflet with all the useful information they may need (address, rules, tips, etc.) during their stay were distributed. Accommodation of the participants Participants were accommodated in 3 different flats in Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, all close to the office and the city center. Barcellona P.G is located on the north coast of Sicily. It belongs to the Province of Messina. The city has a population of over 40,000 inhabitants. The strategic location is surrounded by many wonderful cities and places: Messina 45 km; Palermo 180 km; Catania 180 km; Taormina 80 km; Agrigento 200 km; Aeolian Islands 20 km. Barcellona P.G. is a very nice town, located very close to the seaside, very busy during the day and very calm during the night time. Moreover, there are many interesting places to visit, such as natural parks, museums, ancient villages and Greek/Roman historical areas.

6 The flats for participants were fully equipped (including kitchenware, washing machine, bed covers etc.) and well located in the city center. The participants were living in the following locations: 7 people, in Via Arcodaci 44, 6 people on Via Umberto I., 3 people in Piazza Alfano at the second floor. They were placed in individual and double rooms. Placement Details The subject of the placement for participants was catering and cooking. The interns had the opportunity to learn skills needed for a future professional career in this field. The restaurants and bars were located in various places within Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto. 9 Vocational skills and competences acquired: Inspect food preparation and serving areas to ensure observance of safe, sanitary food-handling practices. Observe and test foods to determine if they have been cooked sufficiently, using methods such as tasting, smelling, or piercing them with utensils. Weigh, measure, and mix ingredients according to recipes or personal judgment, using various kitchen utensils and equipment. Portion, arrange, and garnish food, and serve food to waiters or patrons. Developing specialized Italian language skills Gaining practical working experience: cooking with top chefs, learning to cook gourmet meals Observing Italian and Sicilian food and table decor techniques, comparing practices in different countries

10 Getting to know the work organization in the catering service Using the machines and equipment in the kitchen Preparing soups and sauces, vegetable dishes Preparing dishes from flour and pasta Preparing dishes of meat, poultry, fish, cheese Preparing Italian national and traditional dishes such as: pizza, spagetti etc. Preparing the recipes in Italian language Arranging and decorating dishes

11 CULTURAL PROGRAMMES Aeolian Islands (Lipari and Volcano) Date: 6 th of September The breathtakingly beautiful Aeolian Islands consist of seven main islands, all of vulcanic origin: Alicudi, Filicudi, Panarea, Stromboli, Salina, Lipari and Volcano (visiting the last two islands during our excursion). These islands are the easiest to reach from just a few kilometers away from Barcellona; from the port of Milazzo. The islands are named after Aeolus, the ancient Greek and Roman demigod of the winds. Many of them (e.g. Vulcano or Stromboli) still have a high level of vulcanic activity, with Stromboli even lighting up the night sky. The Islands are listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Sights, not only for their natural beauty but also for the beautiful architecture on

12 the islands, including ancient Greek monuments which is helped by the fact that the construction of new buildings is very restricted. The islands therefore represent a wonderful combination of natural beauty and traditional architecture which makes the visit there a very unique experience. Easily accessible by cruise ship, the Volcano island provides a small sized Etna and opportunity to bath in the refreshing and very healthy volcanic mud. Lipari is famous for its lovely little town at the seaside, called the same: Lipari. Taormina Date: 13 th of September As soon as the group arrived in Taormina, they felt the magical, mythical atmosphere that has enchanted visitors from all over the world for years. Settled on a hill of the Monte Tauro, Taormina dominates two grand, sweeping bays below and on the southern side, the top of Mount Etna, the European highest active volcano, often capped with snow, offering to the visitors a breathtaking, dramatic and memorable view over. Taormina is a medieval village perched alongside the steep terrain jutting out of the ocean. While it has kept its medieval character, it is now a shopper's paradise. Near the top of Taormina Village is a wonderfully preserved Greek Theatre. This pretty much sums up Taormina's charm. Here is something for everyone; great shopping, wonderful restaurants, Roman ruins, medieval pedestrian streets and even stairs to a great beach. Etna + Catania: Date: 20 th of September Mount Etna is an active stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily, in the Province of Catania. It is the tallest active volcano on the European continent and is by far the largest of the three active volcanoes in Italy. Mount Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is in an almost

13 constant state of activity. The fertile volcanic soils support extensive agriculture, with vineyards and orchards spread across the lower slopes of the mountain and the broad Plain of Catania to the south. Due to its history of recent activity and nearby population, Mount Etna has been designated a Decade Volcano by the United Nations. In June 2013, it was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Catania is an Italian city on the east coast of Sicily. It is the capital of the Province of Catania, and is the second-largest city in Sicily and the tenth in Italy. Catania had a long and eventful history, having been founded in the 8th century BC. In 1434 it witnessed the opening of the first university in Sicily. The symbol of the city is u Liotru, or the Fontana dell'elefante, assembled in 1736 by Giovanni Battista Vaccarini. Moreover, the opera composer Vincenzo Bellini was born in Catania, and a museum exists at his birthplace. The Teatro Massimo Vincenzo Bellini, which opened in 1890, is named after the composer. Evaluation of the project The project is deemed highly successful. Employees of the A Rocca Association and persons involved in this project hope it was a rich and useful experience for all the participants. The monitoring team did its best in order to satisfy the expectations of each participant and to ensure the communication with the sending organization at each stage of the project. Participants had chance to see the way of working in Sicily. Certainly, they had an opportunity to get to know a lot of useful information about the functioning of Sicilian restaurants and bars. Those participants who had a previous experience in the field could compare all the similarities and differences of these related enterprises in Sicily and Poland. All participants gained worthy experience in working in team, cooperation with colleagues and individual work according to the individual skills of the each candidate. At the end of the project, participants received A Rocca placement certificate and EUROPASS.

14 Most importantly the participants gained professionally experience in their sector, so that they will be more competitive in the labour market in Poland. Conclusion Our monitoring team did its best in order to satisfy the expectations of each participant. We were always ready to offer help, advice and solve any doubts with our guaranteed 24-hour availability; in any case they needed some assistance. Consequently, the participants seemed to be satisfied with this project. According to their opinion, it was an interesting and useful experience. We hope they found inspiration and got new ideas about how to deal with their future career in their country. We are satisfied because due to their participation in the programme, the participants have enriched their professional experiences. Moreover, participants had the opportunity to explore new horizons by fully integrating in Sicilian culture and meeting many new friends from Italy and from the other parts of world. In addition, the whole group of participants has become good friends, and can still meet each other and exchange their experiences after the project. Our team is very satisfied with the participant s involvement in the project and personal interest of each person involved. We hope we can continue our cooperation with Zespół Szkół nr 3 im. ks. prof. J. Tischnera w Wadowicach.
