1 May 2017 Principal s Message May is a month of renewal trees and lawns greening up, flowers and gardens being planted, our surroundings alive with the blessings of Spring! We are equally blessed to remember our heavenly mother, Mary, who we honor this month, as we do all our mothers here among us. Happy Mother s Day to all! May signals a critical time in our academic year, when we begin to prepare for final exams and summative assessments. With the warm weather comes the temptation to shirk our academics for the great outdoors. However, I remind parents and students to remain diligent in your shared focus on school, through consistent attendance, contact with teachers, and attention to deadlines. Similarly, I remind all students of the expectation of appropriate attire. School is a place of respectful learning, and your clothing choices should be reflective of that. Please refrain from wearing clothes that are more suitable for the park or beach, and which don t reflect our commitment to preserving a Catholic learning environment. Staff may ask anyone not meeting these expectations to cover up or to change. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this. The District s annual Celebration of the Arts was recently held, and LSL was well represented at this District-wide event. Congratulations to our Fine Arts students and staff for their outstanding performances at this auspicious event. Our High School production of The Wizard of Oz goes May 10th - 13th we invite you to follow the yellow brick road and join us for this fan-favorite musical production. We are very proud to recognize 3 of our students who have been given the special honor of prestigious recognition within the District: Superintendent s Award of Excellence recipients David Selwood, Maite Gonzalez-Latorre and Eli Yaschuk These students will be recognized at a special evening later in May. Congratulations to these three outstanding ambassadors of Louis St. Laurent. Athletics continue in full swing, as the Junior High students prepare for Track and Field on May 24th, while our Senior High soccer and badminton teams are in the midst of competition. Junior High Slo Pitch is also up and running. We are excitedly preparing for the 50 th Anniversary celebrations for Cartier McGee/Louis St. Laurent, which are scheduled to take place May 19th & 20th. We encourage all of our current and past students and staff to join us in celebrating 50 years of excellence in Catholic Education! Please see our school website for information and registration links. If you experience any difficulty in registering, please feel free to contact our Business Office for assistance in registering. Please read the rest of the newsletter for important information and dates to be mindful of as the year rapidly draws to a close. Yours in Education T. Wasylenko

2 May 2017 Jesus said to the disciples, I am the way, and the truth, and the life If you know me, you will know my Father also. ~John 14: 6-7~ This passage from the Gospel of John takes place right after Jesus has washed the feet of his disciples and is preparing for his impending arrest. He has reassured them that there are many rooms in his Father s house, and that he will go prepare the way for all. When the disciples say that they are unsure about how to get to be with their God, Jesus answer is simple follow him. The way to God is to be found in the person of Jesus. Living your life in relationship with Jesus, and therefore with God, is the key to eternal life! The month of May begins with the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker on May 1st, which also marks the beginning of Education Week. It is fitting that this week begins with a celebration of the life of this faithful servant of God, a carpenter by trade, who had the special ministry of watching over and caring for Jesus and Mary. We take time to thank all our staff for their dedication and commitment to nurturing our students to help them grow in mind, body, and spirit. Mark your calendars - Saturday, May 13th is the 32 nd Annual Ben Calf Robe Traditional Pow Wow, in partnership with the City of Edmonton, at the Commonwealth Recreation Centre. Grand Entry takes place at 1PM and 6PM. Drop by at any time from 1-10PM to enjoy this amazing spiritual celebration of culture! World Catholic Education Day falls each year on the Feast of the Ascension, which is May 25th this year. This special day is one which highlights the many gifts and great richness to be found in Catholic education. As we look to the world, we, in Alberta, are also deeply grateful for our publicly funded Catholic education. Please visit the Alberta Catholic School Trustees Association website to read their article, Catholic Education: Confronting Fiction with Facts, catholic-education-confronting-fiction-with-facts. The Government of Alberta has passed Bill 1, an Act to Reduce School Fees. The intent of this bill is to reduce transportation fees and school fees by 25%. We are awaiting the release of the guidelines to school districts, which will go into effect on June 1st, to help us establish our fee structures. Look for further communication from your school later in June. Edmonton Catholic Schools is pleased to offer Diploma Exam Preparation courses and Summer School courses through the Department of Alternative Education. Visit their section of our website to learn more and to register: schools/8412/pages/default.aspx. May is the month of Mary, our Holy Mother. As we celebrate Mother s Day on May 14th, it is a wonderful time for us to honor all women, be they mothers, grandmothers, aunties, sisters, or others who fill this vital role in the lives of our children. I would like to leave you with a special prayer for them: O Loving Lord, As Mary was the model of prayer, of love, and of obedience to the will of God, by your grace make mothers holy and rich with your gifts. Bind families together in the bonds of peace and safety so that mothers will feel nurtured by love. May all mothers enjoy good health and spiritual well-being to enable them to care for their families. Amen Adapted from Prayers for Mothers, Bishop Kevin Manning, Parramatta Diocese Many blessings, Joan Carr Superintendent

Our District Chaplains, Father Dean Dowle and Father Julian Bilyj would like to invite all of our staff and our parents to join them on Thursday, May 11, 2017 for the Alberta March for Life, which honors that All Lives Matter From Beginning to End. This is a family friendly event which allows participants to bear witness to our belief of the sanctity of life. This pro-life event begins at Churchill Square at noon. There will be a formal program followed by a march to the Alberta Legislature. Visit to learn more about the event and to view the detailed brochure on the March for Life events. Father Dean shares Together, we walk in happiness to live and give the love that was so generously shared with each of us. Schedule Changes During the month of May we will have the following changes to our regularly scheduled dismissal times: May 19th - Staff PD Day. No school for students. May 22nd - Victoria Day. 4 Page 4 Superintendent's Award of Excellence The Superintendent s Award of Excellence is awarded each year to two high school students and one junior high student at Louis St. Laurent School. This award is given to students whose behaviour has exemplified in an extraordinary way the core values of our school District and/or to students who exhibit outstanding leadership skills and who use their ability to benefit others. These students have shown strength to overcome obstacles in their life and have persevered in overcoming these obstacles. They have shown extraordinary effort to foster a positive quality of life within the school and have contributed in an outstanding manner to the community beyond the school environment. This year Louis St. Laurent is proud to recognize Maite Gonzalez-Latorre and David Selwood as the Senior High recipients and Eli Yaschuk as the Junior High recipient of the Superintendent s Award. These amazing individuals will be recognized at a reception on Wednesday, May 17th from 6:30 PM 8:30 PM at St. Joseph Catholic High School. JH Leadership Team SRO Corner The second week of May is Emergency Preparedness Week in Alberta, which is a good time to review the Alert and Lockdown procedures we have in place in the case of a threat in or near the school. On Alert On Alert procedures are initiated by police or school staff as a precautionary measure in response to a situation in the neighbourhood that might affect the school. These situations include threats of violence or a dangerous offender in the neighbouring community, chemical spills, or downed power lines. When an On Alert is in place, all school exterior doors are locked, and students do not go outside for recess or lunch breaks. Students and staff outside the building are called inside to their classrooms. Activities, classes, and office duties within the school continue as usual. Entry and exit to the school is strictly authorized and controlled. Once the situation is resolved, an announcement is made and the school resumes normal operations. April was a very busy month for Leadership! This year, to celebrate Easter, Leadership organized various activities. Some of the week s events included a mini egg contest, where students had to guess the number of mini eggs in a jar. Kennedy in 8C had the closest guess and took home the jar of 595 mini eggs. The Junior High students also participated in an egg hunt. Students who were lucky enough to find an egg claimed an Easter treat as a prize. Upcoming events in May include Hats on for Mental Health happening on May 3rd. Students are encouraged to wear any type of appropriate hat on this day for a donation of $2.00. All donations will go to Youth Empowerment & Support Services (YESS). Students should listen to announcements and keep their eyes on the Leadership Board for more information. Lockdown A Lockdown is initiated by police or school staff only in the case of an immediate threat to the occupants of the building. Occupants quickly move to the nearest securable room and lock the door. Windows are closed and blinds are drawn. Classroom doors are locked. Students and staff stay quiet and out of sight away from windows and behind locked doors until the threat has passed. A Lockdown is issued in response to a perceived immediate threat to the occupants of the building, such as an armed intruder to the premises. If you have any questions about these procedures, please contact me at Ext Thank you, Cst. Janice Martens School Resource Officer Louis St. Laurent School

14 Page 14 Let s Talk Cancer Field Trip On Friday, April 21, 2017 a group of five Biology 20, Biology 20IB and Biology 30 students, along with Mrs. Yarmuch, participated in the Let s Talk Cancer Symposium at the University of Alberta. Students were privileged to be able to listen and to ask questions of some amazing key note speakers, including Dr. Frank Wuest, who spoke about the research in the Wuest Lab focusing on the molecular imaging of cancer and its link to therapeutics and patient care, Dr. John Mackey, who directs the Clinical Trial Unit at the Cross Cancer Institute and leads the clinical program in breast cancer, and Dr. Jason Peterson, who shared his personal experience with brain cancer and provided a forum where students could ask him any and every question, of which they did! Additionally, our students, Kyra Briske, Kimberly Dela Fuente, Paul Ellert, Maggie Lacson and Samantha Tan toured in the Lewis lab where research into early detection of prostate cancer, drug delivery and the in vivo study of tumour cell invasion and metastasis is being conducted. The students also conducted an experiment in Dr. Wright s biochemistry lab to assess which patient sample was most likely to have an aggressive cancer based on the activity of an enzyme found in the blood. Lastly, students toured the Pathology Gross Teaching Collection and were guided by Dr. David Rayner and Dr. Roberta Martindale as they looked at various specimens and tissue samples. The wealth of cancer knowledge that was learned on this field trip will be shared by the students who attended during upcoming Baron Blocks! Student Parking The parking lot on the north side of the school is a STAFF ONLY parking lot. Under no circumstances should students be parking there on school days. Please be aware of the fact that cars parked in the north parking lot that do not belong to school staff can be towed at the owners expense, so please respect the fact that this is a staff only parking area. 17 Page 17 Louis St. Laurent Catholic School News From The LSL Dance Studio SAVE THE DATE! LSL Fine Arts presents a Gala of Dance, the second semester dance showcase, on Friday, May 26th. We will be showcasing all dance 7, 8, 9, 15, 25 and 35 classes, as well as our Grade 7 Spanish Bilungual class and Louis Crew. CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS Dance Intensive dancers and a number of Louis Crew dancers performed in ECSD s Celebration of the Arts on Tuesday, April 25th. Congratulations to all performers and to our dancers who did a wonderful job representing the arts at LSL! DANCE INTENSIVE Jodie Vandekerkhove will be working with our Dance Intensive students in May. They will be working on the choreography which will be presented at the Gala of Dance. Dance Intensive dancers are excited to be contributing to the upcoming high school musical, Wizard Of Oz. Dancers choreographed a number of routines for the musical and enjoyed working with actors from Grade 7 to 12. FINE ARTS STUDENTS We would like to congratulate Leo Pagdanganan and Jovi Calderon, our Dancers of the Month! Leo is a natural leader in dance. He is creative and is often in the studio practicing and working on his craft. Jovi easily steps into a leadership role as well. He is focused in class, models appropriate behaviour and is always in the studio practicing. Congratulations to both boys! LSL Improv The Louis St. Laurent Improv Team (LIT) is playing in the Northern Alberta Improv League (NAIL) finals on Thursday, May 18th at 7:30 PM in the Zeidler Hall of the Citadel Theatre. Come on down and support the team in their efforts. Many thanks to Mr. Vanderhelm for coaching our LSL team.

18 Page 18 Invention Convention We are very proud of all Grade 8 students at Louis St. Laurent! They have worked extremely hard over the past six weeks on their interdisciplinary projects, that were recently on display in the Cartier gym. Using Science, Math and Language Arts skills, students were asked to invent or innovate something that was important to them in their daily lives. The amount of diversity each of the projects showcased was just incredible! Some of the students were asked to go on a field trip to St. Joseph High School to present their ideas to the community. The Grade 8's represented Louis St. Laurent with pride, respect and excitement in the community and to The Learning Partnership which gave us the opportunity to run this program. Thank you to all involved! Celebration of Arts Dancers Our dancers stole the show at the Celebration of the Arts on April 25th. We are so proud of them and of the fantastic dance program at LSL.

24 Page 24 A Message to Parents in Ward 76 From Trustee Marilyn Bergstra April 26, 2017 Dear Constituents, In on-going efforts to improve health outcomes for students I would like to share information related to a research opportunity for students aged who suffer from mild/moderate anxiety. The University of Alberta has created an initiative known as the Breathe Program that aims to improve outcomes associated with student anxiety. This program is a self-lead, online intervention that makes use of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) through interactive and fun applications such as interactive text, embedded videos and comic style storybooks. It is geared towards students with mild to moderate anxiety and received positive feedback from the initial cohort of participants in this initiative. The University is now looking to undertake a randomized control study for youth aged to determine the impact of the program on anxiety. (Young, 2017) I see this pilot as having the potential to yield positive outcomes for Alberta students. I have attached the link below if you wish to gather more information in relation to the project. Given the noted value of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy I would encourage families to seriously consider participating in this opportunity should your child suffer from mild to moderate anxiety. Warmly,
