Position is responsible for preparing reports, testifying and making recommendations on transportation issues through prepared written and oral testimony in regulatory proceedings. This position is a Pay Band 65. 2 Occupation Description Conduct investigations related to suspected violations of Federal, State, or local laws to prevent or solve crimes. Nature of Work Detectives and criminal investigators gather facts and collect evidence for criminal cases. Some are assigned to inter agency task forces to combat specific types of crime. They conduct interviews, examine records, observe the activities of suspects, and participate in raids or arrests. Detectives usually specialize in investigating one type of violation, such as homicide or fraud. They are assigned cases on a rotating basis and work on them until an arrest and conviction is made or until the case is dropped. They provide assistance in criminal and civil liability cases, insurance claims and fraud cases, child custody and protection cases, missing-persons cases, and premarital screening. They are sometimes hired to investigate individuals to prove or disprove infidelity. Detectives and criminal investigators also perform various other types of surveillance or searches. To verify facts, such as an individual's income or place of employment, they may make phone calls or visit a subject's workplace. In other cases, especially those involving missing persons and background checks, investigators interview people to gather as much information as possible about an individual. Sometimes investigators perform work that must be undercover in order to get information or to observe a subject inconspicuously. Most detectives and investigators are trained to perform physical surveillance, which may be high tech or low tech. They may observe a site, such as the home of a subject, from an inconspicuous location or a vehicle. Using photographic and video cameras, binoculars, cell phones, and GPS systems, detectives gather information on an individual. Surveillance can be time consuming. The duties of detectives and criminal investigators change depending on the needs of their clients. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Employees in this Role direct investigations/criminal analyses and train staff in investigating procedures, interrogation, and criminal analysis; review case/project activities and recommend analytical methods on individual cases; conduct tactical analysis of complex criminal cases and organize large amounts of diverse information into concise analytical form; create charts, graphs, and spreadsheets to characterize criminal activities and determine appropriate methods of analysis; provide criminal strategic analysis and recommend actions based on findings; maintain constant contact with law enforcement community; conduct research on criminal activities; and disseminate criminal information to support investigative operations. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor s Degree from an accredited college or university in Business Administration, Criminology, Criminal Justice, Police Science or other related field and two (2) years of experience in law enforcement, criminal, white collar and/or fraud investigations. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or

3 direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Employment Requirements: Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Employment is subject to a background investigation and conditional pending results. Computers and Electronics Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming. Education and Training Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects. Customer and Personal Service Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: Working Conditions: Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage field investigation/inspections that require bending, stopping, standing in various environments. Extensive in state travel is required and occasional overtime.
