1 STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK COLLEGE OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND FORESTRY 2015 CAMPUS STATEMENT Established in 1911 by an act of the New York State Legislature as the State s institution for educational work in forestry, the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) became a founding member of the State University of New York system in 1948 and was re-chartered in 1972, to reflect the increased breadth of its programs. With a reputation as one of the nation s premier doctoral-granting educational institutions with a specialized emphasis on the science, design, engineering, policy and management of the natural and built environments, the College enrolls approximately 1,700 undergraduate and 600 graduate students who participate in the broadest array of environmental and renewable natural resources programs in the United States. The US News & World Report's 2014 edition of Best Colleges ranked ESF 36 th among the nation's top public universities. The College maintains academic campuses in Syracuse and Wanakena (Adirondacks), and has regional campuses and field stations on 25,000 acres around the State that focus on instruction, research, demonstration, and public service activities providing students and faculty with the capability to conduct hands-on field research, instruction and outreach. These include the Cranberry Lake Biological Station, Thousand Islands Biological Station, Adirondack Ecological Center at the Newcomb campus, Charles Lathrop Pack Demonstration Forest, Heiberg Memorial Forest, Tully Field Station and the Lafayette Road Experiment Station. The 17.8 acre Syracuse campus located in the southwest portion of the City of Syracuse is contiguous to Syracuse University and located near SUNY Upstate Medical University. Its faculty and staff regularly partner with both of these institutions on academic and research initiatives. The Syracuse campus is comprised of nine major buildings around a quadrangle, including a state-of-the-art chemistry building and a library with a specialized collection serving a statewide audience. Specialized facilities on campus include papermaking machines, extensive greenhouses, a microscopy center, geodetic facilities, an advanced analytical chemistry, two green roofs, photovoltaic panels on three of its buildings, and a unique biomass fueled combined heat and power system that will provide 60 percent of the campus thermal energy and 20 percent of its electrical energy. The College s new Gateway Center Building includes Admissions, Outreach, conferencing, exhibition, bookstore, café dining and associated facilities, along with a Combined Heat and Power district plant. The plant will utilize renewable woody biomass to satisfy approximately 60 percent of the campus thermal load and approximately 20 percent of its electrical load. In 2014, the Gateway Center achieved LEED platinum certification. It has also received several architectural commendations, including the American Institute of Architects designation as one of the nation's top 10 sustainable architecture and ecological design projects that protect and enhance the environment. The Facilities Master Plan (FMP) initiative, completed in January 2012, outlines campus improvements necessary to realize the College s goals and academic mission. Strategic initiative priorities include a new Academic Research Building (ARB), currently in design. The ARB will be located east of Illick Hall and provide space for portions of the Environmental and Forest Biology Department, as well as to support existing needs and future growth of the campus and its programs. The NYSUNY 2020 program has provided $20,000,000 in funding for the Onondaga Lake Science Center, formerly known as the Water Research & Education Center or WREC. This 34,000 square foot LEED Gold building will blend research, recreation, tourism, environmental interpretation and START-UP NY entrepreneurial opportunities. The project will be designed and constructed for ESF on a land-lease site and is slated for completion in An upgrade to the campus electrical infrastructure is nearing completion. Projects completed in the last year include a project to rehabilitate the exterior masonry, roof, greenhouse, building entrances and windows of Illick Hall; a critical maintenance project for the renovation of the lower level of Marshall Hall as well as the building s fourth floor Landscape Architecture studio space; and renovations to perimeter heating in Illick Hall to address corrosion and system reliability issues. On the main campus in Syracuse, the College has recently begun a series of projects aimed at utilizing limited Critical Maintenance funds to provide updated teaching and research facilities, and maintain buildings in good repair. Projects in planning or design include rehabilitation of classrooms and laboratory spaces across campus; roof repairs/replacements at Bray Hall, Moon Library and Marshall Hall; and a project to rehabilitate the decaying parking deck at the Maintenance & Operations building. Projects in Design (for T. Regional) include: Rehabilitate and relocate the Stone Garage operations, and repurpose the building for academic/research use at the Newcomb campus. Address regulatory storm water compliance, roof repairs and general building maintenance for the Ranger School and Biological Station at Cranberry Lake.
