1 EEO Regulations for Broadcasters Public File The FCC's updated equal employment opportunity regulations emphasize broad outreach and recruitment. The following EEO worksheets are designed to assist and illustrate that KPBS TV/FM is in compliance with the Commission's current EEO rules, policies and record-keeping requirements and continously strives to improve it's outreach and dissemination efforts. 11 Date(s) of Initiative Event(s): Annual Summer Semester Description of Supplemental Outreach Initiatives Describe Nature of Initiative: KPBS Radio News Internship (89.5 FM) The KPBS Radio News Internship program enables Junior and Senior college students or recent graduates in San Diego to gain real world broadcasting experience. As interns, college students or recent graduates will work in all aspects of radio news broadcasting including research, interviewing, writing, reporting and producing for either school credit or Two internship positions are available during the Summer semester. The internship will last for only one semester. Open recrutiment occurs before the semester. Methods of recruitment are as follows: Posting flyers on the SDSU campus and at the KPBS station ing an open intern position announcement to local colleges, universities, journalism organizations and listserves. Intern candidates must complete the application process and meet certain education and skill requirements in order to be considered for an open position. The application along with a resume and two writing samples need to be submitted to the KPBS News Department before the semester deadline. The application package will be rated on a grading scale to determine which candidates to interview. After a round of interviews, the KPBS Senior Editor will select the best candidate(s) to receive an internship based on the eligibility requirements and qualifications. 12 Description of Supplemental Outreach Initiatives Date(s) of Initiative Event(s): Annually - Winter and Fall Describe Nature of Initiative: KPBS Fellowship for Radio News Excellence The KPBS Fellowship Project for Radio News Excellence offers a unique training opportunity for three full-time fellowships. This KPBS/NPR project is designed to train journalists in existing and emerging forms of local reporting and technologies. The fellows will specialize in "cross-over reporting" (radio, television, web and other digital media) and produce news in various formats for distribution via multiple platforms. The Project is based on a five-year timeline and currently serves three participants at a time. The participants are selected for 9-18 month fellowships. Methods of recruitment are as follows: Fellowship posted on SDSU Research Foundation website Internal announcement distributed throughout station to all KPBS staff Advertisement on Careerbuilders.com, Craigslist, Voice & Viewpoint, Hispanos News, Filipino Press, California University Campuses Applicants must complete the application process and meet certain education and skill requirements in order to be considered for the fellowship. The application along with a sample of journalism work must be submitted to SDSU Research Foundation by the application deadline. All applications received by the deadline are screened based on the same criteria in order to determine which candidates will be interviewed. Interviews are scheduled and conducted. References are checked and an offer is made to the the best candidate for the fellowship. 14 Date(s) of Initiative Event(s): June 18, 2009 Description of Supplemental Outreach Initiatives Describe Nature of Initiative: FCC Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Compliance Webinar Hosted by FCC Attorney Meg Miller, the "FCC EEO Compliance" webinar focused on EEO issues of public broadcasting stations. The program reviewed the FCC s EEO requirements including but not limited to a review of general EEO policies, outreach and recruitment, recordkeeping and reporting, long term initiatives, menu options, EEO Public File Report, EEO Forms, and more. The webinar was presented to KPBS management staff. 15 Date(s) of Initiative Event(s): January - May, 2009 Description of Supplemental Outreach Initiatives Describe Nature of Initiative: Professional in Human Resources Certification The HR Certification Institute is the credentialing body of human resource professionals and is affiliated with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the world's largest organization dedicated exclusively to the human resource profession. The HR Certification Institute's purpose is to promote the establishment of professional standards and to recognize professionals who meet these standards. The certification, awarded by the HR Certification Institute, signifies possession of the theoretical knowledge and practical experience in human resource management demonstrating a mastery of the body of knowledge in the field and promoting organizational effectiveness. To become certified, an applicant must pass a comprehensive examination and demonstrate a strong background of professional human resource experience. Break out sessions covered professional development and awareness of the many dimensions of diversity providing knowledge and skills relevant to developing and understanding how diversity factors influence behavior and the organizational context of both staff and service user; organizational development discussed not only managing diversity but understanding how diversity impacts the organizational culture, and accomplishing long-term organizational goals by overcoming barriers to change and differing perspectives; the global market place responded to the expanding global awareness of participants to assist their efforts to move individuals, teams and organizations into the global arena of international exchange.
