2 About the Experiential Leadership Program (ELP) The community is incredible and the amount that I learned is enormous. I feel so much more comfortable with taking a leadership position, knowing that I have a skill set that allows me to make good decisions and support others. Gabriel Matson Earth Science and Math Major Whether you are experienced, or taking your first steps to exploring the Art of Leadership, we welcome you to join us. The Experiential Leadership Program (ELP) is designed to provide hands-on experiences and frameworks to build your confidence and competence as a leader. In this program you will have the opportunity to challenge yourself, become part of a motivated student community, and grow as both an individual and emerging professional. ELP curriculum focuses on developing a leadership mindset, gaining skills and tools for building and being a part of strong teams and communities, and growing ourselves as people so that we can best serve and lead others. What is taught in the Experiential Leadership Program is transferable and relevant to working with people in any environment ranging from classrooms, organizations and communities to boardrooms, rivers and mountaintops. This program provides a well-structured, safe and fun training ground to explore new interests, meet new people, take risk and expand your own circle of comfort. Our goal and commitment is to cultivate inclusive, resilient, self-reflective leaders who have the confidence and skill to take initiative and make a difference in the world. Leadership Training Certification What you will receive Upon completion of all Certification Requirements, you will receive a UCSC Experiential Leadership Program Training Certificate. In addition to your Core requirements, all electives and field experiences that you complete will be recognized in your certificate. In addition to the tools and confidence you gain, your certificate will be a valuable record of your commitment to leadership development and can be added to your resumé and application packets. 3 Certification Requirements Leadership Electives Complete 2 or more Minimum Requirements - The following courses and Capstone Project make up minimum requirements to receive a Leadership Training Certificate. 3 Core Leadership Courses - Focus on gaining tools and insights to strengthen your ability to be an effective and well-rounded leader. 2 Leadership Electives - Choose from 6 courses to round out your interests and skills. There is no limit to the number of Leadership Electives that you can take. 1 Field Experience - Choose from 3 field options to gain experience, build confidence and stretch yourself. There is no limit to the number of Field Experiences that you can take. 1 Capstone Portfolio - Develop a tool that highlights and quantifies your leadership skills, and experiences. Requirements include completing an updated resume and experience log. Time Commitment Most courses are of short duration (1-4 classes), and meet weekdays and weekends. Other than keeping a leadership journal, and completing your Capstone Portfolio, there is no additional work outside of class. Requirements can easily be completed in 3 consecutive quarters; however, if you travel abroad or have other competing commitments, the completion of your requirements can be stretched out over multiple years. High Ropes Adventure (1 day) ELP Backpack (3-10 day options) I ve learned more about leadership and myself from ELP than anywhere else. These courses have been some of the most memorable parts of my college experience! This is one of the few places where you can have fun while meeting new students who are interested in leadership, personal growth, the outdoors and much more. Heileng Chio Double Major: Molecular Cellular Developmental Biology and Art CORE Leadership Seminars ELP courses are relevant and transferable to working in leadership roles and on teams within organizations, communities and educational or adventure based programs. Tools For Leadership - Fall Time Commitment: Four 2-hour classes Gain fundamental skills and the confidence to lead groups and cultivate a welcoming and inclusive environment. This course focuses on developing a leadership mind set, tools for communication and tone-setting games and activities. Networking and Professionalism - Winter Time Commitment: Four 2-hour classes This course provides the encouragement, guidance and tools to effectively seek and step into meaningful leadership roles. We will focus on setting goals, getting organized and taking action. Learn about resources on campus and gain tools and insights for networking and professionalism. Leadership From the Inside Out - Spring Time Commitment: Three 2-hour classes Skilled leadership requires the ability to self-reflect and continually grow as an individual. This course explores temperament, traits, the development of character and tools for self-reflection. I ve been updating my resume over the last couple of weeks and my ELP Leadership Certificate hits on every buzzword that jobs are looking for. - Tommy Beckett History, Technology and Information Management Major Raised $70,000 on kick starter and is Co-Founder of Makesmith Field Experience Options Service Learning - All Quarters Time Commitment: 8 hour minimum Select a service learning project, either on or off campus, that allows you to explore your interests, gain experience and give back to the community. In the Trees! High Ropes Adventure - All Quarters Time Commitment: 1 weekend day Participate on a beautiful high ropes course and explore the value of taking risks and expanding your circle of comfort in a fun, safe and well supported environment. ELP Backpack Time Commitment: Option of a 3 day weekend or a 10 day spring break trip Head out on an adventure that focuses on working as a team and refining your backpacking skills. Gain insights into setting up a fun, safe and successful backpacking trip. No experience necessary for ELP 3-day trips. One was for a class in Imagineering, that was partially sponsored by Disney. Tons of teamwork and leadership skills needed for creative Imagineering teams.
