1 Board Election Candidate Statement Candidate for: Treasurer Jeremiah Nelson University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Director, Master of Accounting Admissions & Career Services Chapel Hill, NC (919) Jeremiah Nelson Resume (PDF) The Leadership Cultivation & Elections Committee developed a set of questions for all candidates to answer, to lend some consistency across the candidate statements and to provide the voting membership with specific information about the priorities each candidate envisions pursuing if elected. 1. What are your top three priorities for the future of NAGAP? As treasurer, I believe fiscal responsibility is priority 1. This means budgeting to ensure funding is available and expenses are managed to achieve short-term goals while taking a long-term, strategic view to ensure NAGAP's financial future. Growing membership is essential for the long-term future of NAGAP. This certainly has revenue implications, but more importantly membership signals engagement with our profession and interest in professional development. Listening to the membership must continue to be a priority for NAGAP's leaders at every level. NAGAP must continue to evolve to address the changing needs and concerns of GEM professionals. 2. How might you contribute to leading the association in the direction of these priorities? As treasurer for the last 2 years, I have had the extraordinary opportunity to contribute to one of the hardest working, most engaged boards I've ever been a part of. I have enjoyed the process of translating complex financial statements into "regular language" to keep the board and membership apprised of the financial health of our organization. While challenging, it was helpful to go through the budget proposal process and lead the board discussion on tradeoffs required to achieve a realistic, balanced budget. I think my experience as a chapter president and my 10 years of involvement with NAGAP have allowed me to contribute in a meaningful way to thinking through the opportunities and challenges associated with growing the membership and evolving as an organization. As treasurer, I look forward to continuing to offer insights, particularly through a budgetary lens, as we collectively work toward strengthening our organization and positioning it for future success.

2 3. Please share a meaningful or memorable experience you've had with NAGAP - in a committee or on a project or in a networking moment. One of the most memorable experiences I have had with NAGAP relates to establishing SEAGAP, the chapter for NAGAP members in the southeast. This was an administratively demanding process, but I was provided a ton of support from the board member that was overseeing chapters, AMP (NAGAP's management company) and other chapter presidents. I felt fully supported throughout the process, which reinforced what an incredible community NAGAP is. The time I served as president of SEAGAP convinced me that the combination of regional chapter and national opportunities for engagement will be a powerful component of NAGAP's future growth. The chapters provide many great ways for members to develop leadership skills and contribute to the profession in a meaningful way. I certainly felt this way and was happy to be a part of creating opportunities for future leaders to emerge and develop in my region. 4. Please describe your NAGAP-related experience/involvement.
