Graduating Senior Survey Report Fine Arts - Graphic Design & Digital Media, COAS Last Modified: 05/08/ What is MOST LIKELY to be your MAIN activity or activities upon graduation? (Select all that apply) Employment, fulltime paid 9 82% Employment, parttime paid 4 36% Graduate or professional school, full-time Graduate or professional 1 9% school, part-time Additional undergraduate coursework Military service Volunteer activity (e.g., Peace Corps) 1 9% Starting or raising a family 3 27% Other, please specify: Other, please specify:
2. As a result of all the courses I have completed at UNF, I feel that... Question I have learned to write more effectively. I have learned to communicate orally in a more effective manner. I have learned how to produce effective digital or multi-media communications. I have acquired greater skill in quantitative reasoning. I have improved in my ability to analyze quantitative information. I better understand the scientific method. I am more adept at using the scientific method. I have improved in my ability to think critically. Agree Agree Neutral Disagree Disagree Not Applicable or Don t Know Total Responses Please indicate whether or not you had any of the following experiences while enrolled at UNF. Question Yes No Total Responses Internship Worked with a faculty member on a research project outside of course or program requirements Study abroad experience
4. Please indicate the number of separate occasions on which you have interacted with the community in the following ways while enrolled at UNF. For example, if you were enrolled in a class that did work in the community once a week for an entire semester, count that as 14 occasions. Question Community Outreach (volunteering, philanthropy, summer camps, public performances in underserved locations, assisting in boys and girls clubs) Community-based apprenticeship (internships, field placements, supervised practicums) Immersion in a community (alternative breaks, study abroad where there is meaningful project-based immersion in a community) Community-based work for academic credit (service learning, civic engagement projects, capstone projects, public education activities) Community-based research (research project for, in, or in collaboration with the community) or more Total Responses
5. Indicate to what extent you agree with each of the following statements. Question When I think about my coursework, I am often reminded of relevant life experiences. My understanding about who I am and my role in my community has been influenced by my college experiences. I often see connections between topics I study in my major and courses outside my major. When I experience puzzling life events, I often think back to things I learned in my courses. The courses I have taken in my major have little to do with courses outside my major. I like to draw on ideas from many areas of study to solve complex problems. Sometimes the best way to communicate with others is to talk face to face. When I do a presentation, I sometimes struggle to select the best format for the audience. I feel that exploring new ways to solve a problem often leads to a good solution. When I am faced with a complex issue in my community, I think about the skills and ideas I have learned in college. I find that thinking about future implications of my actions often gets in the way of solving immediate problems. Agree Agree Neutral Disagree Disagree Total Responses
I am confident that I can relate important concepts in my major to other fields of study. People who get upset about what other people say to them are just not paying attention. If I could do my college education over again, I would take more interdisciplinary courses. Sometimes I think back to things I have done in the past that I would do very differently now if I had the opportunity. When studying my major, I find myself thinking about how the topic applies to my community. I often find that my experiences in the community help me think about topics in my major. When trying to solve a difficult problem, I find it is best to go with tried and true methods. My field of study has few real-world applications. I enjoy connecting facts and theories from one field of study to another field of study. When faced with a complicated problem, I find it helpful to draw on the knowledge and experiences of others
6. Where did you live while enrolled in college? In answering, please consider all colleges you have attended. Lived on-campus for entire college 1 9% career Lived on-campus, but currently 2 18% reside off-campus Lived off-campus, but currently reside on-campus Lived off-campus for entire college 8 73% career 7. What was your student class when you began attending UNF? Freshman 4 36% Sophomore 2 18% Junior 5 45% Senior Other (e.g., nondegree seeking student) 8. From the time you began attending UNF, how many years did it take you to graduate? (Please round to the next highest whole number.) % % % % or more 1 9%
9. Considering only the time spent at UNF, I could have graduated sooner if it were not for the following reasons (choose all that apply): My required courses were not available in the term(s) I % needed them. My required courses were not offered at the times I needed 7 64% them. I withdrew or did not enroll during one or more terms. 4 36% I had to retake one or more courses. 3 27% I made course selection decisions that delayed my 5 45% graduation. I had to work full-time or parttime. 6 55% I chose to participate in an internship or study abroad. I took a reduced course load. I changed majors. 3 27% I double majored. Courses I took before I came to UNF did not adequately 2 18% prepare me. I encountered financial difficulties. 2 18% I had academic difficulties. 2 18% I had health problems. 3 27% I had personal or family problems. 4 36% I have a documented disability. I did not seek help from my advisor, faculty or other appropriate resources. I graduated when I expected to graduate. Other. (Please Specify) 2 18% Not applicable.
10. Were you employed at any time while you were a student at UNF? (Do not include work during breaks, only while classes were in session.) Yes 10 91% No 1 9% 11. On the average, about how many hours did you work for pay while enrolled at UNF? (Do not include work during breaks, only while classes were in session.) Question On Campus Off Campus Total Responses I worked 1-10 hours per week I worked hours per week I worked hours per week I worked hours per week I worked 41 or more hours per week If you had it to do over again, would you enroll at UNF? Definitely yes 2 18% Probably yes 7 64% Not sure 2 18% Probably no Definitely no
13. Please rate your agreement with the following statements about the value of your UNF education. Question My UNF education was life transforming. My UNF education prepared me for the career I want to pursue. My UNF education has led me to rethink my career goals. I took full advantage of the educational opportunities I had at UNF. agree Agree Neutral Disagree Disagree Total Responses Please comment on any of your answers. Text Response Wish there would have been more of a web focus in my Graphic Design major I could have graduated earlier if classes were offered in the summer time and if certain classes were not pre-requisites for others/only offered in the Fall or Spring. 15. In the past academic year, how often have you reviewed any of the materials, ideas, or insights you encountered in UNF courses outside your major, including general education courses and elective courses? At least once a week 4 36% At least once a month 2 18% At least once a semester 1 9% Less than once a semester 1 9% Not at all 3 27%
16. Of all the courses that you have taken in your major, which have been the best and why? Text Response Illustration. I love drawing and using those drawing in my designs. Corporate, Publication, Senior Studio and Portfolio because the Professor's provided a real Studio environment with pressure and everything. Advanced Illustration, publication, corporate identity, web design and print making of any kind. They prepared me for real world experience in my field of work Businuess of graphic design, teaches real life problems and solutions Graphic Design History - good history and context of my field. Business of Graphic Design - practical information to help with the business side of my career. Social Design It made me think about why I want to be a designer and decide important things like how far I will go to please a client with a design. All art histories with Dr. Murphy and Dr. Heuer (I took quite a few with each) - GREAT professors and interesting subjects. A good "break" from 3 hour studio classes / change of rooms and professors. / / Intro to Graphic Design / Digital Photo Design- Professor Begley was great and a good intro to the program. / / Publication - Hard but I enjoyed magazine publication. / / Advanced Web - Intro to web was terrible (the professor wasn't great for that class and the schedule was near impossible), but advanced web was more relaxed. I hope to learn more web in the future. / / Senior Design and Portfolio - Prof. Scaff is great. Very chill class and everyone produced great work in that relaxed atmosphere. I don't know Social design in the graphic design program. It is a different way to approach design. I think every graphic design student should be required to take it 17. Of all the courses that you have taken outside your major, which have been the best and why? Text Response Anthropology. Lukens-Bull was a fun professor and talked enthusiatically about the course. Creative thinking. It gave me another frame to work upon. Figure drawing because Kyle Keith is an amazing professor Cermanics with Stephen Harewood - great class, great professor, and a good class to express creativity and craftsmanship. Black Americans with Dr. Wilder - super awesome topic, really interesting and diverse coverage of information. Still think about what I learned in that class as I encounter situations or news events. Racial and Ethnic Minorities - Great topic, real world context. Still think about what I learned in that class as I encounter situations or news events. I took all general classes at St. Johns State College. I enjoyed psychology because it was the most interesting. Philosophy - interesting subject. Religion - Dr. Treyz was wonderful. Great eye opening experience and visiting other religious houses. I don't know English and critical thinking (at a different college)
18. Did you take any courses in your major that were not relevant to your field of study? Yes 5 45% Not sure 4 36% No 2 18% 19. Please comment on your answer.
