Sustainability Not Just Recycling 101 Director of Recreation, Janice DeMonsi Santa Clara University

About SCU
Sustainability at SCU 2004 Sustainability Policy st Sustainability Coordinator 2007 President s Climate Commitment Signed 2008 Office of Sustainability Created 2010 Climate Neutrality Action Plan 2011 STARS Silver Rating University Strategic Plan highlights Sustainability & Social Justice 2015 Climate Neutrality
What is a Culture of Sustainability? When sustainability is routine, incorporated into the regular activities of the organization. Campus Community no longer thinks of the innovation as a new idea. It has been completely absorbed into the organization s ongoing activities. -Everett M. Rogers, Diffusion of Innovators p. 399
About Me At SCU the past 11 years, married almost 10 of those Have an almost six year old Live amongst the redwoods Grew up in the Green Mountain State Member Sustainability Committee & a Sustainability Ambassador for NIRSA Why am I passionate about this I want future generations to enjoy the same things I have - the ocean, redwoods, and well just all of it
Sustainability Ambassador NIRSA s Commission on Sustainability Communities is looking to help spread the word about sustainability. As an ambassador - I need to do five individual outreach efforts, and one group- this is my group! NIRSA s sustainability in collegiate recreation model states, Sustainability is meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (The Brundtland Commission, 1987).
NIRSA Model For Sustainability
Sustainability Community of Practice A discussion place for questions or for you to post best practices The Sustainability Committee all posed the questions that accompany the model the past 5 months
Why we market what we do- Fall 2011 my supervisor wanted a SPLASH! after reading about a university sending power back to the grid from their fitness equipment
We had done stuff prior to the fall... Removed 8 original ellipticals off the grid with new selfpowered machines Changed marketing to website or social media Changed what program paperwork we needed into ½ sheets or 3rd sheets Composted paper towels in the Weight Room and Locker Rooms Installed dual flush toilets in the locker rooms & waterless urinals Added motion sensors to all storage closets, the laundry room, and work room Added water bottle refilling stations on one water fountain or sink in facility
We had a problem...we weren t marketing what we were doing Solution: Hire an intern for Sustainability for Athletics and Recreation ($3K), and purchase 2 - Woodway Curve Treadmills $14K & Make the SPLASH! my supervisor wanted!
Who is Our Market? Campus Recreation programs have the ability to market to a variety of campus and the community Students Faculty & staff Alumni members Summer camp participants & their families (as well as other summer programs) Guests We see 1400 users a day Monday - Thursday at our Pat Malley Fitness and Recreation Center
Posters, Posters, Posters Intern began creating quarterly poster & a poster for the arrival of the treadmills

Treadmill Arrival Was a Splash Woodway Curves were in the lobby on Earth Day 2012 & stayed there for a week before moving to the weight room
Powered By Sweat? In addition, we wanted patrons to know that MOST of the weight room equipment has no cords attached
How Else Can you Market Sustainability- Infographics Quick, simple facts- eye catching on same doors as facility information
Waste Characterization facts make fun infographics too...
Sustainability is a Section On Our Website Department Information: 1. Mission Statement 2. Sustainability Highlights on all the things we have done over the years, and our latest project Hoofprint Challenge and a section for Spot Light - where this presentation will be later this week
Now Let s Talk Trash Sampling of landfill items from first Waste Characterization August 3, 2012
How to do it Partner with Facilities Department, & Office of Sustainability Items Needed: o Tables o Containers for all types of waste - paper, food, glass, metal, e- waste, reusables, etc. o Gloves o Waste and a strong stomach.
Learning Experience Informative to see what was in landfill bin for a week- from 1st sort August 3, 2012 Student worker s chicken meal Compostable paper towels Bags of recyclables
Joy of Garbage - Oct. 30, 2012 Full characterization - look at all binscompost, recycle and landfill
Changes - made last winter Facilities Met with custodial about different bins Purchased new bags for compost - green; recycling - blue Painted top of waste containers Campus Recreation Educated student employees in meetings
Relocated bins After seeing all the plastic bags in the landfill - decided to re-evaluate location of trash cans Landfill Containers 9 tall plastic bins in the basketball court (3 courts) 3 in the weight room 1 in the MP room 1 in Lobby 1 in Work Room Recycle Containers 1 in all areas noted above Compost 1 in lobby & 1 in work room (in addition all the restrooms and weight room near cardio) What did we end up with..
Only 6 Sets Set = compost, recycle, landfill 3 in main hallway at the ends & center 1 in each locker room & the work room Center set pictured with additional blue bins
Plus NEW Signage - based on what we saw in the waste sort
Blue Bins Joined TWO Terracycle Brigades o o Energy Bar wrappers Paired shoes Campus recycling o o o o Batteries CD s and DVD s Ink Cartridges Thin plastic What we also get - light bulbs & e-waste
3rd Waste Sort - Sept. 20, 2013 Month of trash Issues we found o o o o Laminating sheets Camp snacks In and Out party One bag of compostables and recyclables
3rd Waste Sort Successes My Supervisor sorted for 45 minutes Had student coordinators sort for at least an hour We have improved but still have work to do
To Date Three Trash Sorts We are improving. Haul = what actually happened Real = what we calculate for zero waste
Our Latest Project
263 Tons of Carbon Emissions Club Sports Competitive Game travel (not practice) surveys in which campus community can pledge to take an action for the quarter Each action is given a small, medium or large impact weight in pounds Every two weeks results to date are calculated
Marketing the Challenge 8 x 10 wall mural as you leave the weight room Website - surveys & pdf s Facebook Page - Hoofprint Challenge Instagram campaign: #hoofprintchallenge
Surveys Cover These Areas Conserving Water o o o Take five minute shower Report or fix leaks as soon as you notice them Wash only full loads of laundry or dishes Saving Energy o o Combine errands to reduce car trips Change my thermostat two degrees (down in the winter & up in the summer)
Surveys Cover These Areas (cont.) Waste Reduction o o Buy items in bulk with minimal packaging Provide and encourage recycling at the events I plan (meetings, meals or parties) Miscellaneous Actions o o Volunteer for an hour at the Forge (campus garden) Eat vegetarian (twice a week), reducing my consumption of meat/seafood
Results As of Today
What Else Are We Doing Interview question - what does sustainability mean to you? Value of sustainability - told to employees in orientation, staff meetings, etc. with topics on agendas, volunteer days, hosting zero waste events
Volunteering at the Forge 4 - events to date
Spring Quarter Sporting Goods Drive Malley Ctr. users dropped off items Athletes cleaned out locker rooms Campus Rec donated older equipment
Case Study Natural Resources Defense Council
Campus Recognition Staff Champion for Sustainability, Janice DeMonsi & Group Champion for Sustainability - Campus Recreation
Why Do It? Snowball Effect.. žsadness after the trash sort felt by all student workers žinteresting moments - collecting lint for a day to see how much you can get from our dryer žjoke with the student workers when we see them being green- you get the Green Award for X but right now there is no real award
Questions?
ždoesn t need to be expen$ive žsmall changes CAN make a difference žtell your story! žnew ideas come from staff and students as you continue
