Description Course outcomes Course requirements Master of Leadership Detailed Course Requirements May 2015 v1.0 Page 1 of 5
2 Description This course is designed for aspiring leaders across a broad range of learning contexts, from schools, to organisations and other workplaces, and to communities more broadly. You will develop the professional knowledge and skills to lead in learning communities, whatever their form. You will enhance your own capacity to learn and adapt to changing circumstances and to innovate your way into the future. In turn, you will lead and inspire others to do the same and as a result contribute to building individuals and communities that are productive and resilient. Professional recognition The language education specialisation is endorsed by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) to enable qualified teachers, who successfully complete all course requirements including professional experience, to become registered as specialist teachers. Specialisations Community learning This specialisation will equip you to develop, coordinate and lead the learning of people in their communities. The capabilities needed to lead economically, socially and ecologically sustainable communities are a focus of these studies. You will acquire the knowledge and skill to encourage participation and engagement and to foster opportunities for young people, in particular, to contribute to sustainable and sustaining communities. Curriculum and pedagogy Curriculum leadership lies at the heart of education transformation. Leading school communities to rethink and reform how and what is taught and learnt, is the focus of this specialisation which is available in four streams: digital learning, literacy, mathematics and science. It is designed for current and future education leaders who are faced with complex decisions in relation to curriculum Innovation. You will develop your own knowledge base, acquiring a sound evidence basis for decisions. You will also develop processes and skills for leading the professional learning of others and to support their teaching. General leadership studies This specialisation enables you to tailor your unit choices to suit your own interests or needs while maintaining a strong focus on leadership. You select two specialist units from across the other specialisations. You may for example, choose a blend of organisational learning and science curriculum and pedagogy, or combine community learning and organisational learning. Or you may prefer to combine units from two of the streams in curriculum and pedagogy. Language education This specialisation will build your capacity to teach additional languages and lead language learning in schools. It focuses on principles and practices of languages education in the twenty-first century. You will explore how issues around language and culture play out in language policies, curriculum and practice in both Australian and international contexts and the implications of these for leading languages education. You will also draw on your experience to examine the development and maintenance of additional languages in formal learning environments. In order to take this specialisation you must be registered or eligible for registration as a teacher with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) or your local equivalent. Upon graduating with this qualification you will be eligible to apply to VIT for registration as a specialist language teacher. Organisational learning This specialisation will develop your capacity to support organisational learning and creativity. You will reflect on how to foster and nurture capability and to meet organisational purposes in intelligent and sustainable ways. Master of Leadership Detailed Course Requirements May 2015 v1.0 Page 2 of 5
3 You will examine how psychological, social, and contextual factors influence and shape decision making processes and outcomes in organisations and what is required to lead, manage, and administer a capable organisation effectively. You will also be introduced to the complexities of problem solving and decision making in organisational contexts. As a result, you will be equipped to create conditions and foster capabilities for developing organisational knowledge and intelligence. Principal preparation This specialisation is suited to teachers from all sectors aspiring to curriculum or principal leadership in schools. It will extend your personal and professional understanding and skill in school leadership practice, including your understanding of the need to develop relationships with others in order to establish learning communities within and beyond the school.
