To begin, log in to your Facebook account and click on the down arrow located in the upper right hand corner:

1 Thomas Reustle CSM 566 Today, Facebook is occupied by millions of users. All participating in the social networking craze of either updated our social status or locating family & friends we ve lost touch of. However, many people don t realize the security risks involved with displaying personal information and photos. My goal is to help you learn about some of the security/privacy features Facebook offers. To begin, log in to your Facebook account and click on the down arrow located in the upper right hand corner: Next, click on the security tab located on the left hand side. We will work through a few of the tabs in order to provide as much privacy information possible.

2 Located within this section you will find various security settings, each one containing specific privacy settings. The first line of defense for protecting your Facebook account is the login approval section. When you log into your account, Facebook will prompt the user to enter in an access code. This code will be sent directly to your cellular phone. If anyone attempts to access your account they will have to enter that number. *It s important to remember that all passwords and access codes should be stored in a safe place.

3 The privacy section is going to contain most of your security features. When you click on the privacy tab it prompts you to the following menu: If we focus on the red arrow pointed to Who can see my stuff; this section is telling Facebook who you allow to see your posts. If you take a photo or update some personal information (maybe from a trip or a night out) you can allow only certain people to have access to it. You have the final decision but you can give access to only the people you ve friended or you can have it accessible to the public. *Remember, the public is viewable to everyone.

4 Next, let s focus on the black arrow above titled Who can contact me. If you would like people to search for your name and have the ability to send you a friend request, leave the option Everyone available. You can change this feature to ony have the people you acceppted as friends to contact you. The last section of Who can look me up, could be the most important. Depending on your professional career or concern with security you can determine what Facebook users can look at your profile. If you d prefer to allow anyone to look at your profile than leave the option (red arrow) to everyone. However, Facebook provides the user the option of adding address to all friends, family and co-workers and only the

5 users with the address provided can view your profile. This is a great tool for anyone who really wants to be part of the social network, yet remain unavailable to the general public. Next let s look at who can put information on your timeline. For new users the timeline is a series of events or splash-page you will see when you first log into your Facebook account. Updates or postings your friends make will appear on your timeline. You can alter that timeline by reviewing the contnet of what someone wants to put on that timeline. If you don t want that on your timeline simply deny the request. Another important feature is determining who can see information on your timeline. If you don t want the general population to see your information, limit visibility to friends only. Your timline will only be visible to people you have accepted as friends.

6 Probably the most important feature for security is under the Manage Blocking tab. Blocking users will allow you to enter names or addresses to block people from viewing or sending you friend requests. Not only can you limit visibility to friends but you can block people from searching/finding you on Facebook.
