4 BSW Career Paths Approximately 50% of Grads work for government-funded agencies such as Non-profit organizations Aboriginal organizations Interior Community Services Royal Inland Hospital Mental Health Approximately 50% work for the Ministry of Children and Family Development in such areas as Child protection Youth probation Community living

5 Child Welfare Specialization Prepares graduates for child protection work and other positions in government and delegated organizations (First Nation) and non-profit child welfare agencies Requires completion of 9 credits of BSW Child Welfare courses, plus a practicum in 4 th year with the Ministry of Children and Family Development or an Aboriginal or other child welfare organization

6 Program Accreditation The TRU BSW is accredited by The Canadian Association of Social Work Education (CASWE)

7 BSW Program Requirements A minimum 120 credits in total including: 60 credits of Social Work courses 6 credits from SOCW 2060 (formerly 200A) and SOCW 2120 (formerly200b) 54 credits of upper level Social Work (3000/4000 level) courses 48 credits of Liberal Arts from the list of approved electives 12 credits of student s choice may be either further social work or liberal arts courses Or block credit from an approved certificate or diploma in human services NOTE: A minimum grade of C is required in all core Social Work courses and a minimum 2.33 (C+) GPA in each semester with an overall 2.33 (C+) GPA while in the BSW

8 BSW Admission Requirements Entry to the BSW degree begins in Year 3 A minimum of 54 credits and up to 66 credits of general university studies which: Must include: English 1100 or 6 credits of English Literature Must include: 6 credits from Social Work (SOCW 2060 Intro to Social Work Practice and SOCW 2120 Intro to Social Welfare in Canada) May include: a combination of Humanities and Social Science courses from the approved electives list May include: approved Human Service Certificate or Diploma credits

20 Applying For Admission to the BSW program TRU begins to accept applications October 1 each year for the following Fall semester entry Prospective students can apply online or by requesting an application package from our Admissions Office Application Deadlines for the BSW program are January 27, 2012 Early Admission April 27, 2012 Admission for remaining seats For an overview of the application process refer to the Admissions website

21 How to Apply to the BSW Program Apply anytime after October 1. Application can be made three different ways online mail-in or in-person at TRU Admissions Office New TRU students pay $25.50 admission fee Submit official transcripts Complete application package and submit to Office of the Registrar

22 Registration for Accepted Applicants to year three of the BSW program Registration for Fall and Winter semester takes place in June. Accepted applicants will be mailed a letter of acceptance and a Registration Notice in May with a date and time for registration. Meet with the BSW Program Co-ordinator for course selection and approval Prior to registering in their courses, third year students will be required to pay a $500 commitment fee.

23 Bachelor of Social Work Degree Advisor The Faculty of Social Work Degree Advisor assists students in selecting courses at the level Students entering third year of the BSW Program must be advised by the BSW Degree Advisor.
