10 Example of a Course Description refer to the TRU Calendar (hours per week of lecture; seminar; lab) Course credits: Course fees are calculate based on total number of credits ENGL 0500 Developing Writing Skills (6,0,0) 4 credits ABE Advanced: A basic writing skills course which covers mechanics, sentence structure, grammar and composition. The major modes of writing (description, narration, and exposition) are covered. Prerequisite: Successful completion of ENGL 0400 or English 10, or equivalent with a C+ or better, or Communication 12 with a C+ or better Prerequisites: Specific course (s) that must be successfully completed prior to taking the course; will state if a minimum grade is needed in the prerequisites.
11 Do you need to start with upgrading? Check the TRU calendar to determine program admission requirements and course prerequisites. Course prerequisites must have been successfully completed within a certain number of years with the minimum grade required. If you need to upgrade don t worry!! You can take upgrading courses at TRU.
12 Adult Graduation Diploma Requirements: Languages Arts 12 (TRU ENGL 0600) Mathematics 11 or 12 (TRU MATH 0500) Three Grade 12 ministry authorized courses or Social Studies 11 and two Grade 12 ministry authorized courses (TRU BIOL 0600, CHEM 0600, COMP 0600 or 0650, PHYS 0600, PSYC 0500, MATH 0600/0610, NAST 0600, SOSC 0600, or University-level courses) Eligibility: Applicants must be at least 19 years of age Have successfully completed three credit courses as an adult Have successfully completed at least one credit course at TRU Student Development Website -
13 What level of upgrading should I start with? Students who have been out of the educational system for 2+ years or are unsure of their levels are often advised to write the Accuplacer: a self-paced test written under supervision in a TRU computer lab. 14 What will upgrading cost me at TRU? All level UPrep students are charged $49.46 per term for the UPASS (student bus pass). Levels are tuition-free but students are charged fees on a per credit basis up to 3 credits per course. English 0500 (4 credits) costs $ and STSS 0500 (3 credits) is also $ UPREP courses at the 0400 level cost are tuition-free but students are charged fees on 4-credits: ENGL 0400 costs $ Math 0300 and English 0300 are completely free of charge, and paying for the UPASS is optional Note: 0300 level students may purchase the UPASS for $49.46 from the campus cashier
15 Textbooks Textbooks may be purchased from the University Bookstore in the Campus Activity Centre. Before you arrive on campus - Use The Bookstore Online Shopping Cart Anytime after August 1 st - look online for Fall semester text books After December 1 st - look online for winter semester text books Budget approximately $125 per course for textbooks The TRU Bookstore sells new and used textbooks
16 Is there funding available? The Adult Basic Education Student Assistance Program Grant (ABESAP) is a needs-based grant for BC residents who wish to take UPrep courses (such as English 0500 and Math 0500) Download an application form from and return completed applications to TRU Financial Aid Office (OM 1631) ABESAP applications are accepted starting: July 1 for Fall semester (Courses starting in September) November 1 for Winter semester (Courses starting in January) April 1 for Summer session (Courses starting in May or June) Any questions about ABESAP? 17 Student Loans To qualify as having full time student status for a Canada Student Loan you need to be enrolled in at least a 60% course load at the 1 st year level or higher. For most degree programs a 60% course load is at least 3 courses at the 1000 level or higher in each semester. UPREP courses, at the 0300 to 0600 level, do not meet criteria for student loans. Apply online and to find more information go to Financial Aid and Awards
18 What is the LPI? The LPI stands for Language Proficiency Index. This test can be used to satisfy the prerequisite for first year university English courses at TRU. For example - the prerequisite for English 1100 is a 73% minimum in English 12; or a level 4 on the composition section of the LPI; or the completion of English 060; or completion of ESAL 057 and ESAL 058 with a grade of C+ or better. Register online at Cost for exam - $125 + tax (within BC) LPI study guides are available for purchase at the TRU bookstore or online Bring to your testing session a passport-sized photo to give to the tester as well as your personal identification to show to the tester

20 TRU has three semesters- When do you want to start? Fall Semester Most programs start in the fall semester Winter Semester Summer Session Sept Dec Jan April Session I - 7 weeks May to the end of June 15 wks 15 wks Session II 7 weeks End of June to mid August Session III 15 weeks May to mid August
21 Critical Dates for Students Go to Schedule of Events in the calendar Find out: - When classes start each semester - Last day to add a course - The last day to drop a course, with a refund - The last day to withdraw from courses, without it affecting your grades - When exams start
22 How to Apply Apply anytime after October 1st Application can be made three different ways: New students pay $25.50 application fee Submit all official transcripts 1. Apply online 2. Mail 3. In-person: Admissions/Registration Old Main Building Room 1155 Kamloops, BC Complete application package and submit to Office of the Registrar
23 Apply Early - Starting October 1st Complete all the information on the application form Current High School students must include their PEN ID (Provincial Education Number) New students - Pay a $25.50 non-refundable one-time only application fee
24 Attach Most Recent Transcripts Submit official transcripts or school records from both: Any & all post-secondary institutions attended High School (Secondary school) Current High School students should go to Ministry website to request final transcripts be sent to TRU Ministry of Education click onto Student Secure Web and create your account Mature students should contact the last public secondary educational institute they attended to request that their transcript be sent to TRU Admissions.
25 Your application will be acknowledged You will be notified that we have received your application If you have questions about your admission status, contact TRU Admissions: ; OM 1155.
26 Registering in Courses Registration for Fall and Winter takes place in June and July. Admitted students will be mailed a Registration Notice in early June, telling them what is the earliest day they can register. Being admitted to TRU DOES NOT guarantee you will be able to register for all the courses you want to take.

28 Online Course Schedule View the current course schedule to see which courses TRU will be offering each semester. Check the times, days of the week and instructors for each course. Check the online schedule for availability of seats in each section of the course prior to enrolling. If you need help with your course selection, contact Academic Advising. 29 Timetabling and Registration Tutorials Students enrolling for the first time in an Academic or Uprep program must take the online Timetabling Tutorial and Registration Tutorial. These tutorials explains how to create a conflict free timetable and how to read the schedule. Select a maximum of five courses per semester and build a conflict free timetable. Go to: Academic Advising/ Online Tutorials
30 mytru Portal The mytru Portal allows registered students access to their TRU student record. All students use mytru to pay fees, print their schedule, check grades, check their account summary, etc. Academic students can also register for their courses using mytru. All students are given a mytru account be sure to check your account for important information from TRU. It is important to become familiar with this system. You will find a link to mytru at the top of the TRU homepage Read the Login Help section to find out your ID and password. Note: you will be required to create your own password.
31 Tuition Deposit Conditionally admitted UPrep students will be asked to pay a tuition deposit in May or June, to secure a seat in the program and before they can enrol in any courses. This fee of $300 is a down-payment towards the student s first semester fees. Online fee payment available through mytru.
32 Pay Full Fees Pay the balance of Fall fees by deadline 4:00 pm, Sept. 2, Pay all Winter fees by deadline 4 pm, Dec. 2, There are number of fee payment methods. Please refer to the Admissions & Registration section of the TRU website for details.
33 Scholarships, Bursaries, and Awards Check the Financial Aid and Awards website for a list of scholarships and bursaries open to TRU students.
