Any modifications to the requirements listed must be made in writing, signed by the advisor, and attached to the original Licensure Requirements Form. The original Licensure Requirements Form and the Transcript Review Form and written record of any modifications must be submitted with the Application to the Teacher Education Program and with the Application for a Virginia License. Requirements for licensure include: content area requirements, professional studies requirements, and professional teachers assessment requirements (e.g. VCLA, Praxis I, II, and VRA). 3 Transcript Review Form: Elementary Education Applicants transcripts will be officially reviewed by a Radford University faculty member after the student has applied to the College of Graduate and Professional Studies. The graduate college sends the materials from the applicant s file to the School of Teacher Education and Leadership, so it is very important for the applicant to submit transcripts of all college-level work completed at regionally-accredited institutions. Individuals interested in exploring the possibility of pursuing a teacher education program who wish to find out how many of the requirements they have or have not met in the content area can also use this Transcript Review Form to unofficially review their own academic records. Content Area Requirements: Mathematics (9 credits total needed) - courses in mathematics or statistics. Some courses in other areas which are also math courses (e.g., a business course in statistics or some courses in engineering). n or Science (12 credits total needed, semester hours must be in at least two science disciplines and one course must be a laboratory course) courses in any of the physical or natural sciences (physics, chemistry, earth/space science, astronomy, botany, physical science, geology, biology, physiology, etc.); should include at least one lab science. Some courses in medical fields or applied clinical fields could also meet requirements (e.g., an anatomy and physiology courses in nursing or courses in veterinary, agricultural, or engineering fields). (at least 2 different depts.) Lab Science - n or History (9 credits total needed, must include American history and world history) American - World Other- n or
4 Social science (6 credits needed, must include geography and economics) Geography- Economics- n or English (12 credits total needed, must include composition, oral communication, and literature) Other courses would most often have a English prefix and would include courses in composition, oral communication (could have a speech or communications prefix), and literature. Some technical writing courses in other areas (e.g., business) could also meet requirements. Composition - Oral Communication - Literature - Other - n or Arts and Humanities (6 credits total needed) -fine arts (art, music, dance, theater); humanities could include philosophy, religion, classics, languages, history, and literature. n or Questions regarding whether or not courses meet the content area requirements should be directed to the MS in ED Program Coordinator. Any such questions need to be accompanied by a full course description (usually available in the course catalog of the institution where class was n). If the applicant wants to have a course reviewed to determine if it meets a Pre-Professional course requirement (e.g., HUMD 00 or EDEF 20), he or she must submit a catalog description or a course outline/syllabus (preferable) to the academic advisor assigned to them after they have applied to and been accepted by the College of Graduate and Professional Studies. The might require that the course be reviewed by the Coordinator of the Center for Academic Advising and Student Support Services or by the Director of the School of Teacher Education and Leadership.
