2 2 nd Year In 2 nd year, Physics/Astronomy specialists enter one of our Programs: Honours, Combined Honours PHYS + other Major Physics/Astronomy, Combined Majors PHYS + Other Combined Major in Science Dual Degree Program BSc (Physics) & BEd (Secondary) BSc (Physics) & B Arts BSc (Physics) & B Music Minor in Physics / Minor in Astronomy Life Science specialists choose program in Year 3 2

3 Graduation Requirements You are responsible for knowing your graduation requirements. Consult UBC Calendar and Faculty of Science online: ESSENTIAL REFERENCE UBC CALENDAR - in Calendar: Faculties, Colleges and Schools choose Science then Bachelor Science for all graduation requirements. Program specifics: continue and click Physics or Astronomy Arts Electives, Science Electives, Communication/English requirements are all necessary to graduate. We can help you check that you are meeting your requirements. In 3 rd year visit our Undergraduate Co-ordinator for a Graduation Check 3

4 BSc Graduation Requirements Science Breadth requirement for Majors: 9 credits in Science outside specialization or in additional Arts courses (double or combined programs typically meet these without any extras.) For PHAS department, these breadth courses must be outside of PHYS, ASTR, MATH Communication Requirement: six Beyond credits First from Year Physics ENGL & 100, Astronomy 110, 111, 112 (rec.), 120, 121; SCIE 113; 4 SCIE 300 or CHEM 300

5 Honours For those intending to enter career in research or continue to graduate school Honours Physics Honours Biophysics Honours Physics and Astronomy Honours Physics and Mathematics Honours Physics and Computer Science Honours Chemical Physics Honours Physics and another Science Subject To remain in Honours: Take at least 30 credits each Sept-April or at least 15 credits per term if co-op- AND maintain average >68% (if you didn t take 30 credits first year, you will likely have to see an advisor to enter an Honours program may not be accepted online see a human) We can help formulate a program which meets all honours requirements, Faculty Science requirements, & UBC graduation requirements 5

6 Major For those intending to enter career in science/ technology, education, science-related. NOT the recommended stream for graduate studies, although Majors who take all the core senior honours physics courses may be accepted to graduate schools. Offers more flexibility than Honours (fewer specified courses, more electives) Easy to add a Minor (or Combined Major) Major Physics Major Astronomy Combined Major Physics and Computer Science Double Major in Science and/or Arts 6

7 Dual Degree For those intending to add a second specialization outside of Science. NOT the recommended stream for graduate studies, although students who take all core senior honours physics courses are often accepted to graduate schools. Dual Degree Science and Arts BSc(Physics) & BA Dual Degree Science and Music BSc(Physics) & BMus Dual Degree Science and Education 5 year program: Dual Degree Program: BSc(Physics) BEd (Secondary) Graduate ready to accept teaching position 7

8 Combined Major in Science Broad-based Science education Flexible (easy to add Minor outside Science) Large breadth (less depth) Choose 3 CMS packages DEFINITELY NOT for those intending to enter graduate studies in physics or astronomy CMS Packages : Physics and Astronomy Chemistry Earth/Environmental Science Life Science Mathematical Science 8

9 Minor (for those in Physics/Astronomy) If you re in any Physics or Astronomy Program: you may pick up a second specialization Easy to add a Minor outside Physics/Astronomy to any Major or Honours Physics Not a lot of elective room to add a minor to combined honours or combined majors program, but possible with careful planning. Minor in another Science Minor in any Arts subject (Economics, Philosophy, a language are often seen, but any Arts minor possible) Minor in Commerce Minor in Human Kinetics Minor in Land and Food Systems Typically need 18 upper level ( level) credits See Calendar Many Arts Minors require 30 credits, 18 of which must be upper level You must apply for a Minor (download forms from Faculty Science) 9

10 Minor in Physics/Astronomy for those in other programs If you are not entering a Physics or Astronomy program, you can still take physics courses and earn a Minor in Physics or Minor in Astronomy From any Science Program: Pick up a second specialization in Physics and/or Astronomy Easy to add Minor in Physics or Astronomy in most UBC Arts, Commerce or Science programs - Just come see an Advisor Minor in Physics: PHYS 200 or PHYS 250, + 12 upper-level credits of PHYS + further 6 upper-level credits of PHYS and/or ASTR courses. PHYS 301 and/or PHYS 304 must be included. Minor in Astronomy: PHYS 200 or PHYS upper-level credits of ASTR + further 6 upper-level credits of ASTR and/or PHYS courses. You must apply for a Minor (download forms from Faculty Science) 10
