2 What is Voice over IP? By deploying a Quality of Service (QoS) policy, the N3 broadband network can be used to carry voice. This is achieved by converting voice traffic into data packets that can be supported and transported with appropriate priority over the network. This consolidates voice and data services into a single cost-effective infrastructure.

3 N3 Voice Services enable NHS organisations to significantly reduce voice call costs, whilst providing a resilient and flexible service. This has been made possible by utilising the N3 broadband network which has been enhanced to carry phone calls using Voice over Internet Protocol technology (VoIP). NHS organisations can now make substantial savings on communications by converging their voice and data over a single network. N3 is one of Europe's largest virtual private networks. By June 2009, it had connected over 52 NHS Trusts in England to Voice Services and over 2 million voice calls had been made using N3 Voice Services. N3 Hosted Voice What is N3 Hosted Voice? N3 Hosted Voice is a service specially designed for small to medium users within the NHS, such as GP surgeries and EAPMCs. Using this service, users can take advantage of the benefits of managed N3 Voice Services without the need to manage any technical aspects. Do customers need to install any special equipment? The main advantage of N3 Hosted Voice is that the IP telephony is hosted by N3, so there is no need to have a telephony switch on site. N3 will provide and manage all the telephone equipment required. This means that for most small to medium sized organisations within the NHS this will be a very cost effective and easy solution to implement.

5 Heart of Birmingham Teaching Primary Care Trust case study The Heart of Birmingham Teaching Primary Care Trust has become an early adopter of N3 Hosted Voice Services (HVS). As well as the technological benefits of IP telephony, this adoption has brought significant cost savings from free on-net calls to other N3 HVS connected sites, cheaper calls to mobile phones, and reduced maintenance and administration costs. The trust now has six sites connected to HVS and more than 1,000 extensions in use. Service availability has recently been extended to include GP surgeries and medical centres. After looking at several voice options we selected the N3 Hosted Voice Service. It s ideal for new sites because as well as offering attractive calling rates, it removes the need for us to install a separate telephone system. N3 Hosted Voice Services saves money on call charges, provides a common platform and simplifies moves and changes. It also enhances ease of use for community staff members who work in various locations. N3 Local Gateway Services enable NHS organisations to connect their existing voice networks to N3.There is an initial set-up fee and on-going monthly charge but free on-net calls will result in significant cost savings. The N3 Call Commit package also offers significant reductions in Mobile and PSTN call charges for LGS over standard pricing.

7 Reduced call charges for mobile calls 60% of the NHS's call charges are from landlines to mobiles. As part of the N3 Local Gateway Service you can take advantage of nationally negotiated rates for fixed to mobile calls which will offer substantial savings. This is thanks to a partnership with mobile network operator O2. What are the benefits of N3 voice services? Reduced call spend through free on-net calls, i.e. calls will be free of charge between subscribing N3 Voice Service sites Reduced PSTN call charges through access to mobile gateways for all N3 Voice Service customers An opportunity to take advantage of the existing investment in N3 infrastructure An opportunity to reduce dependency on locally provided outbound PSTN/ISDN channels A cost effective alternative to existing Private Circuits and Voice Private Networks The hosted model reduces local NHS administration and overheads. N3 Network Security N3 is the national broadband network for the NHS, with 1.3 million end users and over 40,000 connections in England and Scotland. The N3 network is a private network with gateways to other networks, most notably the Internet. Only NHS organisations and approved third parties can connect to N3. N3 is a highly secure network protected at all levels by a series of industry leading firewalls. N3 users are responsible for ensuring that their own network and systems are protected against fraudulent use.
