4 1. Housing tips based on school s location Do you know at what school you will be studying? Scroll down until you reach you institution. (The estimates of cycling and walking distances are approximations.) 1.1 Bergen city centre Regardless of which school you will be studying at, living in the city centre is relatively preferable. This is where most of the welfare and culture opportunities are located. SiB is a Student Welfare Organisation, and three of their six fitness centres are located in the city centre. Most of the colleges are within a minute walk, or a short bicycle ride, from the city centre. NHH, the Faculty of Education at Bergen University College and the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at UiB are further away from the centre, but there are plenty of busses going from the centre to these schools. Bergen also has the advantage that nature and the beautiful mountains are only a short bicycle ride or walk away, even if you live in the centre. The drawback with this is of course that everyone wants to stay in the centre, and this leads to a pressured rental market. Even for ordinary rooms in shared apartments the rent can be over NOK for one month. Some single rooms are very small and there are landlords who exploit the fact that most students want to live in the centre. Be aware of deficient or illegal contracts. You can save money and get some extra square meters by moving 2-3 kilometres away from the centre. Thousands of students live in the centre, and most of them really enjoy this. It is still possible to get a room in a shared apartment for about NOK, but if you do so, you are very lucky. Distances to the city centre are estimated approximately from Torgallmenningen (the main city centre pedestrian area). 4

5 1.2 University of Bergen (UiB) In general UiB has a unique city campus because almost all the faculties and departments are situated in the middle of the city centre, in the area called Nygårdshøyden. The exception is the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, which is located in an area called Haukeland. Because Bergen s city centre is compact, the different faculties are only a short distance away from each other. You can walk across the Nygårdshøyden in about 10 minutes. The entire city centre is in within walking distance from UiB. Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences These buildings are situated on the South end of Nygårdshøyden. The whole Nygårdshøyden area will be within a 10-minute walk. The distance to Torgallmennigen and a district called Danmarksplass is about the same. Therefore, housing at Danmarksplass, Kronstad, Møllendal and Solheimslien can all be considered as well. Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Psychology and Faculty of Social Sciences These faculties are situated in the middle of Nygårdshøyden. All of Nygårdshøyden and Møhlenpris will be at most a 10-minute walk from school. The rest of the city centre will also be within a 15-minute walk from these three faculties. Faculty of Law The law faculty is situated on the north end of Nygårdshøyden, and the area is called Dragefjellet. Therefore, living in the northern part of Nygårdshøyden or on Møhlenpris is preferable. Other areas to consider are the rest of Nygårdshøyden, Nordnes and Laksevåg, which are more practical than Danmarksplass. But remember that all of the faculties at Nygårdshøyden can be easily reached by bus from all of the different districts surrounding Bergen s city centre. Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry The faculty and its departments are situated in the area around Haukeland and Årstad. Kronstad, Møllendal, Fløen, Minde and parts of Kalfaret are living areas close to the faculty. The area towards Lægdene and Landås is also nearby, but further away from the city centre. 5

6 1.3 Bergen University College (HiB) Faculty of engineering The faculty of Engineering is located close to the city centre, in Nygårdsgaten 112, on the south-end of Nygårdshøyden. Both Nygårdshøyden and Møhlenpris are a minute walk away from here. Living at Danmarksplass or the northern parts of Kronstad and Solheimslien can also be considered. The distance to Danmarksplass is about the same as to Torgallmenningen. The faculty can easily be reached by bicycle, bus or Bergen Light Rail ( Bybanen ) from Minde and the area towards Fantoft. Bybanen has a stop right outside the faculty, and the final stop is at Nesttun (the Festplassen (city centre) in the other direction). Bergen s main bus station is close by, and you can catch a bus that brings you to the Sandviken, Åsane, Laksevåg and Fyllingsdalen areas from there. Loddefjord Department of Subsea Technology This department is situated in the northern part of Loddefjord. It takes about 20 minutes by bus to get here from the city centre. Loddefjord is a suburb, and because of the distance into to the city centre, the rental prices are lower in this area. Faculty of Health and Social Sciences Haukelandsbakken Departments of Nursing and Radiography These departments are close to Haukeland University Hospital. Haukelandsbakken Student Home is ideal if you want to live close to your school. The bedrooms are quite small, and facilities are shared with other students. Lægdene and the closer areas of Landås can also be considered. You will though have to take the bus, bybanen or bicycle for about 20 minutes to get to the city centre. The areas Møllendal, Fløen and the closest parts of Minde and Kronstad are minutes away by foot from the departments. It is about a 30-minute walk from the city centre. The departments are about 20 minutes away from the city centre by bike. You can also catch a bus (nr 2 and 3) to Haukeland University Hospital. The departments are a 10 minute walk away from the hospital. The bus to Lægdene, bus number 12, also has a stop only a couple of minutes away. Møllendalsveien (Departments of Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Postgraduate Studies) Møllendalsveien is surrounded by Danmarksplass, Møllendal and Kronstad. The northern part of Solheimslien can also be considered for housing. 6

7 The departments are close to Danmarksplass, and many of the buses pass through this area. The city centre is within a 30-minute walking distance. Bybanen has a stop at Danmarksplass, which makes it easy to reach the areas Mindre, Fantoft and Nesttun. Haugeveien at Nordnes (Department of Social Education and Social Work) The department is a 10 minute walk away from Torgallmenningen, in a nice area called Nordnes. Faculty of Education, Landåssvingen The Faculty of Education is situated about 6 km southwest from the city centre. Both the number 2 and 12 busses can be taken but number 12 is the most practical one. With regards to housing, the areas of Lægdene and Landås can be considered. Minde is a 15-minute walk away uphill. There is a bicycle path from the city centre up to Landås, but remember that most of the distance is uphill. 1.4 Norwegian School of Economics (NHH) NHH is situated in Breiviken, approximately 4 kilometres North of the city centre. The first three kilometres along Sandviken are quite flat, but there is a long and gentle uphill slope the last kilometre. The entire road is paved and has a bicycle path. Lots of buses go by NHH on their way to the Northern part of the city. It s easy to catch one of these busses in the city centre from one of many bus stops: Festplassen, Fisketorget, Bryggen and Sandviken. NHH has an active student organisation, and many of the students prefer to stay close to NHH. The area Breiviken has many apartments within walking distance of NHH. SiB Student Housing, Øyjordsveien and Hatleberg, are both close to NHH. Lehmkuhlhallen climbing- and fitness centre is also located here. 1.5 Bergen Architecture School (BAS) BAS is situated in the outer part of Sandviken, a 10-minute bicycle ride or a 30-minute walk away from the city centre. Lots of buses go by BAS on their way to the northern part of the city. Living in Sandviken and the city centre is practical. If you find housing in the southern part of Bergen, be prepared to switch buses in the city centre. 7

8 1.6 NLA University College Sandviken (Courses in Religious Education, Intercultural Studies) This department is situated in the northern part of Sandviken, about 2 kilometres away from the city centre. You will need about 30 minutes to there from the city centre. Housing in Sandviken, Fjellsiden and Skansen are preferable. Breistein (Teacher and Pre-School Teacher Education) Breistein is an area located about 16 kilometres North of Bergen city. Bus number 210 leaves from Åsane Terminal almost every hour and it takes about 15 minutes from Åsane to Breistein. Buses from Bergen city centre pass through Sandviken, and go frequently to Åsane. 1.7 Bergen National Academy of the Arts (KHiB) Marken (Departments of Design and Specialised Art) Marken is a nice area close to the Main Train Station in the city centre. The administration at KHiB is also located here. Housing in the city centre and Nordnes is very practical, but remember that bus stops and Bybanen are close to KHiB, making it easy to live outside the city centre too. Nordnes (Department of Fine Arts) This department is situated in C. Sundts gate 53 and 55, which is approximately a 10 minute walk away from Torgallmenningen (the city s main square). 1.8 Betanien Deaconal University College (BDH) BDH is located at St. Hans-haugen in Fyllingsdalen, about 4 kilometres South West from Bergen city centre. Fyllingsdalen has a typical suburban character with a shopping mall and several large residential blocks. Bus numbers 4, 12 and 18 can be taken to get to BDH, and they leave quite frequently from the city centre. The bus ride takes around minutes, depending on the traffic. 1.9 Haraldsplass Deaconess University College (HDUC) HDUC is situated a few hundred meters from Haukeland University Hospital. See the comments under Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at UiB. 8

9 2. About the city districts 2.1 Breiviken Breiviken lies in the extension of the outer part of Sandviken. NHH is located there, and the area is therefore a popular housing district for students at NHH. SiB student housing offers a recently renovated student home, Hatleberg, which is located close to NHH. Lehmkuhlhallen climbing- and fitness centre (SiB) is also situated here. Stemmemyren, a public fitness centre with swimming pool and outdoors football (soccer) field, is close by as well. There are also grocery stores, a gas station and a pizza/kebabrestaurant near by. See also section 2.2 below. 2.2 Outer Sandviken The outer parts of Sandviken are a few kilometres outside downtown Bergen, but are filled with nice old white wooden houses and have a wonderful view of Byfjorden. The area is therefore recognized as a more beautiful and popular area than the southern part of the city. The area is close to Fjellveien and Fløyen, and some uphill walking is often necessary. Outer Sandviken has some grocery stores, but if you want to live close to cafés and restaurants, you should choose an area closer to the city centre. Several hiking routes are nearby. The famous route Stoltzekleiven has a 315,5 meter elevation and 801 steps. From the top you get a great view, and a further hike to Fløyen or Ulriken is recommended. 9

10 2.3 Inner Sandviken (Skuteviken) The inner part of Sandviken is like outer Sandviken, only closer to the city centre. The area is situated behind Bryggen and further north. At Bryggen you will find some clubs and bars, and a lot of souvenir shops. If you walk up from Bryggen, you will soon find some nice alleys and the classic wooden houses. There are some nice cafés and restaurants, but most of them are close to Bryggen. The area has several nice parks, and a trail to Fløyfjellet is also close by. Bergenhus fortress along with Sverresborg fortress and Koengen Concert Area are large park areas on the northwestern part of inner Sandviken. 2.4 Nordnes Nordnes is a quiet part of the city centre. Students, but also seniors and families with children, live here. The northeast side has larger apartment buildings, while small wooden houses and narrow alleyways dominate the southwest side. On the outer cape of Nordnes lies Nordnesparken, a nice park where you can barbeque and swim. The Bergen Aquarium is also located here. The USF Verftet, a culture house with a restaurant, is located on the southwest side. The city centre s most popular swimming spot is also nearby. There are a couple of shops and restaurants along the streets on the top of Nordnes. Along Strandgaten, a quiet pedestrian area on the east side, you will also find shops, grocery stores and some good cafés. 2.5 Møhlenpris Møhlenpris is situated on the other side of Nygårdshøyden, on the south-west side towards Puddefjorden and Damsgårdsundet. Møhlenpris is close to the city centre, but is quiet and inhabited by mostly students and immigrant families. Møhlenpris is considered to be Bergen s most up and coming housing district. The area is dominated by large apartment buildings, and 10

11 some of the buildings are quite old and worn down. The area is quiet and there is almost no traffic, unless you live close to Puddefjordsbroen which is one of the main roads into Bergen, and thus very busy. Møhlenpris has two grocery shops and a big football field with a new artificial turf. Nygårdsparken is situated on the north-east side of Møhlenpris. The park has somewhat of a bad reputation, due to the settlement of the city s drug addicts in the north end of the park. However, the rest of the park is an excellent and beautiful place to stay when the sun makes the library less tempting. But like anywhere else, remember to lock your bicycle and don t leave it out over night. The student-run club Hulen is located next to the eastern end of Nygårdsparken. The Student Centre is situated between two parks; Botanical Garden and Nygårdsparken. The centre offers a restaurant, fitness centre, swimming pool, bookstore and the offices of many student organizations are also here. 2.6 City centre/ Nygårdshøyden This is where most of the city s happenings take place. The city centre is very compact, and with some exceptions, most of Bergen s clubs, culture institutions, public institutions, shops and restaurants are located here. The streets of Kong Oscars gate, Lars Hilles gate and Nygårdsgaten are quite busy with traffic. Most of the streets though are one-way streets, have low speed limit, and lots of speed bumps to make you slow down. The centre is dominated by the large, open areas surrounding Torgallmenningen and the pond Lille Lungegårdsvann ( Lillelungeren ). Earlier, the area between Vaskerelven and Nygårdsgaten was the most popular amongst students in their choice of cafés and clubs. In recent years, an environment of cafes, clubs and shops in the area between Kong Oscars gate and Skostredet, just behind the Fish market, has become popular. Marken is a small and nice area on the northeastern part of the city centre. Cafes and nice small shops are located here, and the area leads to the train station, the main bus terminal, the public library and Bystasjonen (shopping mall). 11

12 Nygårdshøyden is a well-known area in Bergen. Most of Bergen University s departments are situated here, and thus many of the students prefer living in this area. The area is mostly nice and quiet, but in this area you also run the risk that your neighbours will have after parties more frequently than in other parts of town ;) Nygårdshøyden has some nice parks like Nygårdsparken, Muséhagen and the area surrounding St. Johannes Church. 2.7 Fjellsiden/Kalfaret This area has traditionally been considered to be Bergen s posh area. Here you will see large houses with nice gardens close by the city centre. Students live here too, mostly in lofts and basement apartments. Some of the houses in this area have been renovated into apartments that normally are rented by students. The lower part of Kalfaret is only a gentle uphill slope from the city centre. However, to get to Skansen and Starefossen you need to walk quite a few steep inclines. Be aware that what might seem like a short distance on a map, could take a while to walk due to steep elevation. One of the positive things about the area is that it has a great view over Bergen and Byfjorden. Mountains and hiking routes are also close by. With the exception of Kalfarveien/Kalvedalsveien, the area also has very little traffic. Bus number 11 and Fløybanen can be used to reach Skansen and the surrounding areas. 2.8 Damsgård/Gyldenpris In these areas, on the eastern side of Puddefjorden, the rent is usually a little cheaper than in the city centre. On rainy days, walking across the bridge will probably not be your favourite, but there are busses you can take on days like that. Because of the location and cheaper rent, we think both Damsgård and Gyldepris can be recommended areas for students. These areas also have some grocery stores, and nice hiking routes to Løvstakken are nearby. The view from this side of the city is also nice! Bus number 4, 10 13, and 19 can be used from the city centre to reach Gyldenpris. Bus number 16 leaves for Damsgård. 12

13 2.9 Laksevåg Laksevåg is situated west of Gyldenpris, surrounded by the three mountains Damsgård, Lyderhorn and Løvstakken. Laksevåg has a mall with about 30 shops, but lacks cafés and restaurants. The area is within walking distance to the city centre, but it might seem a little far away from the city. It s about minutes by foot to the city centre Danmarksplass/ Kronstad Danmarksplass is known as Western Norway s largest traffic intersection, and due to this, the area has a somewhat undeserved bad reputation. There is a lot of traffic on the highways here, and there are not so many nice parks as in other parts of town. Still, Danmarksplass is quite central, and a bit cheaper than living on the other side of the bridge. Bicycle paths, frequent buses and Bybanen make it easy to get to the city centre. Danmarksplass has several grocery stores, post office, fitness centre and couple of cafés and bars. The area east of the highway is called Kronstad and has traditionally been considered nicer than the area to the west, Solheimslien. For a student today, this makes little difference, because Bybanen stops at both Danmarksplass and Kronstad. Hiking routes for Ulriken and Løvstakken are close by. Depending on how far south you live, Torgalmenningen will be a minute walk. Bybanen and frequent buses make this area one of the most attractive outside the city centre. 13

14 2.11 Møllendal/Fløen Squeezed in between Ulriken and Store Lungegårdsvann you can find Møllendal and Fløen. This is outside the city centre, but still not too far from the city centre. Here you can find a light mix of apartments and small and large houses. This area is nice and quiet as long as you stay away from the train lines and Årstadveien. There are no real parks here, apart from the trail along Store Lungegårdsvann towards the city centre. But you can still find some nice green areas. The area towards Svartediket is close by, and you can go on a nice evening stroll there. The only public transportation here are the buses from Årstadveien. There are two grocery stores here, but no other shopping possibilities Minde/Solheimslien This is a large and diverse area and you will spend approximately 15 to 20 walking from Danmarksplass. On the bottom of the valley along Fjøsangerveien and Inndalsveien you will be exposed to a fair amount of traffic, dust, industry, et cetera. But you can find decent apartments if you look a bit further up the hills on both sides, towards Løvstakken or Ulriken. There are not very many apartments here, but this area has cheaper and/or better apartments than in the city centre. You can find grocery stores at Danmarksplass, and this is also where you ll find the closest pub. Apart from that, you have to get to the city centre for more shopping and clubbing Landås/Lægdene These two areas are located on a hill below Mount Ulriken. If you live here, and you are not a bicycle enthusiast, you will more or less be dependent on bus transportation. (Landås is about 5-6 km from the city centre). These areas are most ideal for students at the nurse- and teacher education (HiB) because this school is located there. There are many green areas in this district, and it is close to Mount Ulriken. Landås is similar to many of the other suburbs in 14

15 Bergen when it comes to shopping. It is quite limited apart from grocery stores, and some simple service companies like hairdressers, et cetera. There are plenty of busses that connect Landås and the city, as well as biking paths Fantoft At Fantoft you will find SiB's largest student village with 1300 residential units. It is situated approximately seven kilometres south of the city centre. The buildings are from the 1970s, and are well known for its international environment because many exchange students live here. SiB s new family houses are also located here, so expect to meet students with children. Although Fantoft is located far from the city centre you can easily go by bus or by the Bergen Light Rail (Bybanen). Bybanen has its own stop at Fantoft and takes 20 minutes to get to the city centre. There is also a bicycle path if you prefer cycling. At Fantoft you can find grocery stores, one of SiB s fitness centre (Fantofthallen), Club Fantoft, et cetera. Club Fantoft is a student run pub, disco and café. * Some of the photos may be inaccurate. 15
