We are thrilled to welcome you into the MCW family, and hope you are excited to begin your journey into medical school. 3 Overview: General Housing MCW Milwaukee students live in a number of cities surrounding the Medical College of Wisconsin. Of the 187 students who answered the survey, the most common location to live is within Wauwatosa, and the second most popular location is the nearby Milwaukee North West area. The medical college is a short walk from most homes within Wauwatosa. Most utilized more than one of these methods when finding a place to live. A great place to start is the MCW class Facebook page! If you are local, or will be in the area for Second Look Day, touring the neighborhoods is a fantastic way to find houses or apartments for rent that may not be listed online. 4 Wauwatosa The city of Wauwatosa is home to the Medical College of Wisconsin Milwaukee campus. A majority of MCW students live in this town, and most houses and apartments are a short walk or drive to school or Tosa Village. Approximately 55% of students who live in Wauwatosa drive to school, % walk, and 5% ride a bike. The average commute time to MCW is 5-1 minutes. Housing Most students rent in Wauwatosa, with 9 students owning either a house or condo. The majority of students rent 2 bedroom, 1.5 bathroom apartments, while most rented houses are bedrooms, 2 bathrooms. I like studying at school late so it's nice to be able to just walk home. I had a roommate all throughout college and thought I would be able to concentrate best if I lived alone. Though I pay a lot for rent, I think it's worth it, for the location alone. Traffic in Tosa in the morning is very unpredictable due to construction. Really close to school! I love walking to school and not having to worry about driving/parking. Close to downtown Tosa also which is great - I walk to go out to dinner or drinks. Would rather live in the city, but the trade off would be a farther commute, and a complicated commute in the winter. Great location near North Ave in a quiet, friendly neighborhood. Within biking distance to school. Rent is reasonable and our landlord is wonderful. 6 Milwaukee North West North West Milwaukee is located between Wauwatosa and downtown Milwaukee. This area is home to many MCW students, and is a great midway point between the Medical College of Wisconsin and the city. Approximately 8% of students who live in North West Milwaukee drive to school, 1% walk, and 1% ride a bike. The average commute time to MCW is 1-15 minutes. Housing Of the 2 students who answered the survey, 2 rent either an apartment or house in North West Milwaukee and students own a house. The majority of students rent 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartments, while most houses are bedrooms, 2 bathrooms. Parking - Street Parking - Garage/lot Laundry - No Cost Laundry - Coin Operated Dishwasher Fitness Center Student Comments Pool/Spa The following are quotes about current experiences living in the North West Milwaukee area: Our apartment is very spacious for a low price. Underground parking is pretty cheap at $5/month or street parking is free. We don't pay for heat, which is also a huge money-saver. The staff at the complex is pretty helpful. If traffic is bad then the commute can get longer. Especially since I have to drive through school to get to the student parking lot. Far away from the bars. Close to school but far away enough that it feels like I am leaving campus and get a break. Far from downtown Wauwatosa. I can have my dog at my house, and my husband and I have the space needed to both do work in our home. I own my place, so when I graduate, I can sell it and recover some of the cost. I can also take on renters, which makes the rent REALLY cheap comparatively. 8 Milwaukee Downtown Downtown Milwaukee is a great place for students to live who enjoy the upbeat city life, while still being able to make the commute to MCW. Students enjoy living in a variety of neighborhoods, with the Historic Third Ward and Riverwest being the two most common areas. All of the students who live downtown drive to school with an approximate 15-2 minute commute. Housing Eleven students answered that they live downtown. Of these students, 1 rent either an apartment or condo and 1 student owns a condo. The majority of students rent 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartments, while most condos are 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms. 9 Milwaukee Downtown Amenities The apartments and condos of Downtown Milwaukee include a variety of amenities for residents. Of the 11 students living downtown, 55% have parking included, and 5% have laundry available at no additional cost. Parking - Street Parking - Garage/lot Laundry - No Cost Laundry - Coin Operated Dishwasher Fitness Center Student Comments Pool/Spa The following are quotes about current experiences living in the Downtown Milwaukee area: Fun night life and close to everything, can walk or bike to the lake as well as festivals during the summer. Distance from school, can keep me out of the loop for what other med students are up to. Close access to all downtown amenities including Lake Michigan, great restaurants, bars (Water Street/Third Ward/Brady Street) and many more. When there are construction projects between my home and MCW it can take up to 5 minutes to get to school (usually 2). It's not a bad commute, but this does get annoying on early mornings and during bad weather. Living downtown is great. It has really allowed me to enjoy the city of Milwaukee. I moved downtown after M1 year and have not regretted it. The commute is about 15-2 min each way, but it seems quicker. Traffic really isn't bad. Also, it s great when I have time off to just walk to a local restaurant or bar downtown. I've also saved a lot of money by eliminating frequent cab trips from Tosa to downtown on the weekends. 10 West Allis West Allis is located directly south of the Medical College of Wisconsin and is home to the West Allis Farmer s Market and the Wisconsin State Fair Park. Eight students who answered the survey live in West Allis. All students drive to school with an average commute time of 1-15 minutes. Housing All students who live in West Allis rent their apartment or house. The majority of students rent 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartments, while most rented houses are 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms. 12 Additional Information General When searching for a roommate, medical students have taken many different approaches. About one quarter of the MCW students live alone and another quarter live with their spouse or family. The remaining students live with medical students or friends outside of MCW. The most popular place to find a roommate is through Facebook or at Second Look Day. Internet/Cable Most students pay for Internet and cable in addition to their monthly rent. The most common service students AT&T, 56 utilize is Time Warner, at approximately $6/month. AT&T is also popular, at approximately $5/month. Time Warner, 12 DirecTV, 5 Outside Home Wisconsin Athletic Club Tonken's Center Other Xperience Fitness Exercise Facilities Many MCW students are active in their free time. Students exercise indoors at the nearby Wisconsin Athletic Club (WAC) or at the on campus Tonken s Center. The WAC is $5/month, and Tonken s is free. In addition to exercising indoors, Wauwatosa and the Anytime Fitness 5 surrounding communities have great parks and trails N/A 1 for running, walking, and biking. MCW Student Housing Information

13 Student Advice Current students of MCW have provided some tips and tricks for finding a place to live in Milwaukee, as well as some comments regarding their time so far at MCW: Be bold. Look at River West and Bayview as viable options. They're cool places to live. If you don't know any potential roommates before coming to Milwaukee, and you don't want to live alone, MCW has a great resource for finding roommates. I would recommend starting to look for housing and a roommate in the Spring or early Summer, at the latest, before you are starting classes. As far as housing, if you don't mind living a little farther away from school, the commute from downtown to MCW is normally 15-2 minutes. I love living downtown and I would definitely recommend it to incoming students. Most of the nightlife and activities to do in Milwaukee are located downtown, which is great for weekends. With that said, most students live in the suburbs surrounding MCW. Walk around the school. People put up ads on the cork boards in the stairwells as well as in the cafeteria by the booths. I like living in downtown Milwaukee, but I thought I would have more time to explore and take advantage of the amenities offered in the area. Next year I will live closer to campus because of this and I can use the time I save on the commute to have a little bit more free time. I do really like downtown Milwaukee though and would recommend students explore the area, but know the time sacrifices required. I'm one of the few that doesn't have a car, but I've made it work. I walk to school and the gym. To buy groceries, the bus system is easily accessible albeit a little expensive. Otherwise I get rides from friends. In the future I hope to save up for a car, but not having one is doable. I live across the street from school and I love it! The time I save gets utilized for studying, socializing, and relaxation. Keep checking posts on the class Facebook page and call renters as soon as possible when you see a place you're interested in. Talk with your roommate a fair amount before choosing one. Drive around to find other apartments/houses for rent, and try to get one within walking distance. You save on gas and can easily get to school in any weather. MCW Student Housing Information 215 1
