1 AIO Network Analytical Chemistry basic course "Molecular Spectroscopy" May 26, 28, and June 4, 5, 2009 Wageningen University, University of Utrecht, Free University Amsterdam & University of Groningen Topic The Molecular Spectroscopy course is one of the Basic Modules of the ANAC programme. It intends to provide a level of background knowledge adequate for any analytical chemist working at the PhD/AIO level. Obviously, molecular spectroscopy covers a wide range of research and applications in the analytical chemistry world. In fact, it includes a variety of rather independently operating and developing disciplines. In this course, a selection of 4 topics is made which are considered to be of major importance in analytical chemistry, now and in the future. Specialists are invited as lecturers. Course format The course is intended for students in analytical chemistry at the graduate student (AIO) level. However, scientists from other fields, industry or from other research institutes are welcome to attend as well. The various methods and techniques will be covered in overview lectures given by experts in the different fields. Handouts will be made available giving summaries of the topics discussed. On some days a laboratory tour is foreseen. The course language will be English. Dates and venue The 4-day course will be held on May 26, May 28, June 4 and June 5, 2009 at Wageningen University, Utrecht University, VU University Amsterdam and Groningen University, respectively. Lectures will be given from approx. 10:00 to 16:30 h. Detailed programmes with the exact locations and itineraries are given on pages 4-8. Programme Day 1: Tuesday May 26, Wageningen University NMR spectrometry, with emphasis on analytical aspects and use in analytical practice. Lecturer: Dr. T.A. van Beek, Dr P. de Waard (WU) Day 2: Thursday May 28, Utrecht University IR spectrometry, with emphasis on practical aspects and up-to-date applications. Lecturer: Dr. T. Visser (UU) Day 3: Thursday June 4, Free University Amsterdam Laser spectroscopy, with emphasis on fluorescence and Raman techniques. Lecturers: Dr. F. Ariese and Prof. Dr. C. Gooijer (VUA) Day 4: Friday June 5, Groningen University The course will give a general introduction into mass spectrometry, with emphasis on applications in proteomics and biochemistry. Lecturer: Prof. Dr. R. Bischoff & Dr. P. Bruins (RUG)
2 Examination and certificates An examination will be organised after the course in the form of take-home assignments to be completed by the participants. Two types of certificate (with or without examination) will be made available.
