3 Schiphol Travelling from Schiphol Airport to Groningen If you arrive in the Netherlands at Schiphol, the Amsterdam International airport ( the easiest way to travel to Groningen is to take the train. The underground train station is located near Schiphol Plaza, within several minutes walking distance from the luggage claim areas. The Dutch railway system is run by Nederlandse Spoorwegen ( and known as NS. You will recognize it by its yellow and blue colors. Just follow the yellow illuminated signs that direct you To the trains. Train Tickets It is important that you purchase a train ticket to Groningen before you board the train. Passengers travelling without a valid ticket will be fined. You can buy either a first-class ticket or a second-class ticket. There are two ways of purchasing a ticket: at the ticket office where you can purchase a ticket from a railway officer in person, and from the yellow and blue ticket-vending machines that you will find in the luggage claim hall and by every entrance to the train terminal. You can purchase tickets from the machines only by using your credit card or a debit card with the Maestro logo. Train schedules Information on travelling by train can be accessed at the NS website. A train goes from Schiphol Airport to Groningen twice an hour. The journey from Schiphol Airport takes approximately 2.5 hours. The trains are quite comfortable and feature the free wireless internet at most of them. However, there is no form of refreshment service on the train so be sure to purchase your snack at Schiphol. 2

4 Travelling from Bremen Airport (Germany) to Groningen Bremen airport might be convenient for cheap intra-european flights because it hosts the discounter Ryanair and also offers low airport taxes. By bus There is a direct bus connection from the Bremen airport to Groningen. The bus stop is situated close to the entrance/exit of the Ryanair terminal of the Bremen airport. The bus schedule can be found here It takes about 3 hours to reach the Groningen Central Station (CS). By train Another possibility is an indirect train connection. For this, you have first to go to the Bremen CS (Hauptbanhhoff) by tram (the tram schedule is here Then you take a train to Groningen (do not mix with Gröningen, Germany!) with a step over in Leer, Germany. The journey from Bremen HB takes about 2.5 hours. More detailed information on the train connection can be found here or here Traveling to Groningen by car Please note that car traffic in the city center is restricted, and street parking is very limited. Also, be aware of the numerous cyclists that may not exactly follow the traffic regulations. There are several parking garages ( located near the centre. 6 How to get to the Academiegebouw (Academy Building) Broerstraat 5, Groningen On foot or by bicycle The Broerplein, with the Academiegebouw and the University Library, is within walking distance of the main train station. It s about a 10 or 15-minute walk. If you like, you can hire a bicycle at the station. The way is very easy to find. If you stand with your back to the station you will see the Groningen Museum in the canal in front of you. Walk towards it. Cross the bridge past the museum and continue walking straight ahead. Cross over the Zuiderdiep and continue straight on, into the Folkingestraat, towards the centre. Follow the Folkingestraat until you reach the Vismarkt. Continue straight ahead, past the Zwanestraat on your right, until you see the bookshop 'Studystore' on your right. Turn right here (Broerstraat). The entrance to the Academiegebouw is now on your left (up the stairs). The University Library is on your right. By bus A large number of buses go towards the Broerplein. Several buses stop on the Grote Markt, and few have stops near the A-kerk. Please go to or for information about timetables. 5

7 How to get to the Bernoulliborg Nijenborgh 9, Groningen The Bernoulliborg, located on the Zernike Complex, is a new building of the University of Groningen. In order to get to the Bernoulliborg you can take bus line number 11 and 15. From the Central Station to Zernike complex your travel time will be approximately 15 minutes. Between 9 o clock in the morning and 6 o clock in the evening the bus lines 11 and 15 run every 15 minutes, otherwise every 20 minutes. Bus 11 also stops at the Grote Markt (centre of the city) Both buses head in a northerly direction towards Zernike complex. After the Shell gas station on your right, you pass under the ring road and the first bus stop at Zernike is at the white porters' lodge on your right. You need to push the button after you have passed this building and step out the next stop, you will have the big blue building at your right hand (Bernoulliborg). 8 How to get to Der AA-Kerk (The Der AA- Church) Akerkhof 2, Groningen On foot or by bicycle From the Main Station Groningen it s about ten minutes walk to the Der Aa-church. Walk along the Groninger Museum. Keep walking straight ahead, cross the Ubbo Emiussingel, into the Ubbo Emmiusstraat. Cross the Zuiderdiep, and go into the Folkingestraat. Go up to the Fish Market and turn left. After 50 meters you will find the church on your left hand. By bus Buses 6, 9, 16 and 83 from the Central Station stop near the church, stopping Akerk. From there it is about 50 meters walk to the church 7

9 How to get to De Martinikerk (The Martini Church) Martinikerkhof 3, Groningen Buses 2, 3, 4, 5 and 11 from the Central Station stops near the church, stopping Grote Markt. From there it is about 50 meters walk to the church. 8

10 How to get to the van Swinderen Huys Oude Boteringestraat 19 Van Swinderen Huys is located on the Oude Boteringestraat in the center of the city, near the Grote Markt and the Academy Building of the University. It is about 10 minutes' walk from Central Station. The nearest public car park is at the Ossenmarkt. 9
