1 Faculty of Mathematics and Physical Sciences School of Chemistry Project Manager Part time hours Fixed term for 24 months, available from 1 February 2016 Integrated computational and synthetic tools to drive the discovery of orthosteric protein-protein interaction inhibitors Applications are invited for an experienced Project Manager to support the Director in management and administration of the EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) Programme Grant Integrated computational and synthetic tools to drive the discovery of orthosteric protein-protein interaction inhibitors, led by the University of Leeds. You will be responsible for delivery of the programme vision through overall project management of four work packages, across two UK institutions. This is a position of high responsibility that requires excellent interpersonal skills and a broad range of operational expertise. You will ensure that the work packages stay on track and the objectives are met. The role will include day-to-day project management, organisation of Management Group and Advisory Group meetings and workshops/programme conferences, financial monitoring, preparation of management reports, submission of periodic reports to EPSRC and liaison with project partners and the EPSRC. In addition, you will co-ordinate external advocacy and public engagement activities related to the grant. 2 Job Description Responsible to: Reports to: Head of the School of Chemistry Professor Andrew J Wilson and Professor Adam Nelson Background to the Post The position results from the award of a Programme Grant by EPSRC to a collaborative team that is led by Professor Andy Wilson ( The Programme brings together chemists and biologists from the Universities of Leeds and Bristol, together with stakeholders and industry partners (The Northern Institute for Cancer Research, AstraZeneca and Domainex). The aims of the Programme are to (i) develop computational tools to classify protein-protein interactions according to their underlying 3D structure and the probability that they can be inhibited using small molecules and (ii) exploit these computational tools to design classes of small molecule that can be prepared readily using state-of-the-art synthetic methods, and that are predisposed to target different types of protein-protein interaction. The Project Manager will be responsible for all aspects of the administration and management of the project and will carry out the duties under the direction of Professor Andrew Wilson, Programme Grant Director. Purposes of the Post Project manage the collaboration enabled by an EPSRC-funded programme grant Support the Director and Management Group to deliver the research goals and an ambitious vision for the programme Coordinate external advocacy and public engagement activities related to the grant Main Duties and Responsibilities Project manage the programme to deliver an ambitious research vision to accelerate the discovery of inhibitors of protein-protein interactions of high therapeutic value - taking into account the early-stage academic nature of the project Proactively coordinate all aspects of the programme with the Work Package Leaders in order to implement project deliverables and milestones, ensuring due project deliverables and reports are appropriately flagged, and assisting with the collection and submission of the latter To maintain a watching brief with regards to potential risks in the project and proactively engage with the investigators to resolve any issues or challenges encountered Produce and update project management documents, including, Gantt Charts, milestones, risk registers, agendas and minutes and reports

3 To report to the Director and the Management Group on all aspects of the project on a regular basis Produce professional oral and written reports for a range of stakeholders, such as funders and end users Assist in the editing of technical reports and articles Prepare presentations, minutes and reports for annual external advisory board meetings, management group and work package meetings Organise stage-gate and mid-term review (in conjunction with EPSRC), external advisory board, management group and work package meetings, and workshops, including creativity@home activities Coordinate agreements including research collaboration, confidentiality and IP agreements, working with the contracts and commercialism offices of the different partners Liaise and work effectively with investigators at the University of Bristol Develop and maintain proactive working relationships with a team of administrators at the Universities of Leeds and Bristol, in particular with the Faculty Research and Innovation Office on the robust maintenance of all financial documents Work with the Director in the development of a communication strategy, for example by supporting him with the writing and organisation of press releases and media coverage events Coordinate and maintain good communications with the project partners and EPSRC Maintain a website presenting the research activities of the Programme Actively explore opportunities for public engagement and scientific communication of the project and key findings through social media and other outlets Coordinate external advocacy activities Identify new funding and exploitation opportunities Other duties as directed, commensurate with the grade of this role Career Expectations The University of Leeds is committed to developing its staff. 5 Person Specification Essential Research experience and educated to PhD level or equivalent in an appropriate scientific discipline e.g. Chemistry, Life Sciences Strong IT skills (including Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint) Excellent organisational skills with attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines Excellent analytical skills (financial, situational and organisational) accompanied by strong risk assessment and mitigation abilities, e.g. ability to independently identify potential issues as well as propose and implement solutions Good financial management skills including the ability to understand complex budgets Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others Previous experience in administration of research projects Proven project management skills Decision-making and problem-solving abilities Excellent interpersonal skills, including an ability to establish and maintain good working relationships at all levels and with individuals from different backgrounds and cultures Excellent written communication and presentation skills Experience in a multidisciplinary academic environment, working with senior academics Desirable Experience of working in a relevant commercial organisation Project management qualification e.g. PRINCE 2 Experience of project management across multiple institutions

7 Further information about of the School The School of Chemistry has outstanding facilities for research in synthesis including refurbished laboratories, superb NMR equipment (including 600 MHz and three 500 MHz NMR machines and an LC-NMR facility), and X-ray crystallographic, mass spectrometry and microanalytical services. These facilities have been enormously enhanced and expanded by the award of > 7M (Chemistry share: 2.5M) under the JIF Scheme; further refurbished synthetic space houses new analytical HPLC, semi preparative LC-MS, preparative HPLC and robotic equipment. Infrastructure for the high-throughput synthesis, purification (including mass-directed HPLC) and analysis of bioactive small molecules is particularly relevant to this programme. The University science library has one of the best collections of journals and books to be found in any British university. The University subscribes to many journals (including ACS, RSC and Tetrahedron journals) and databases (SciFinder scholar and Beilstein on-line) which are accessible from offices adjoining the laboratories. The Astbury Centre for Structural Molecular Biology The Astbury Centre brings together >300 researchers at Leeds at the interfaces between chemistry, biology and physics. The Centre provides a buoyant interdisciplinary environment for biomolecular science, for example through an annual research retreat, an annual lecture, a vigorous seminar programme and the biennial Astbury Conversation. The Astbury Centre s infrastructure and technical support has been enormously expanded and enhanced through major initiatives including the 17M Astbury BioStructure Initiative. Relevant infrastructure includes surface plasmon resonance; isothermal titration calorimetry, fluorescence and circular dichroism spectroscopy and a mass spectrometry laboratory. From 2016 the centre will house 950MHz NMR and two Titan KRIOS 300 KeV electron microscopes supported by technical experts. The Mass Spectrometry Facility is dedicated to the analysis of biomolecules. There are five mass spectrometers including a new Synapt HDMS MS/MS instrument with nano-electrospray and in-built ion mobility capabilities, a Q-Tof equipped with nano-electrospray and capillary HPLC-MS/MS facilities for peptide sequencing; an LCT Premier with the highest m/z range available (m/z 60,000) for the analysis of non-covalently bound macromolecules, a Platform II electrospray instrument with on-line HPLC facilities, and a MALDI-Tof Protein chip Reader. Together these outstanding facilities and unparalleled collaborative opportunities for chemists, biologists and physicists provide the ideal environment in which to pursue multidisciplinary science.
